<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

- DEVICE FOR SPRAYING LIQUID IN THE FORM OF AEROSOL "
The invention relates to a device for spraying liquid in aerosol form, which can be applied in all cases where it is necessary to produce the atomization of a liquid in a gas, for example air, in particular in apparatus for spraying insecticides, atmospheric disinfectants, combat gas neutralizers, therapeutic substances and the like. The object of the invention could also be applied in other fields, for example to liquid fuel injectors in combustion engines, etc.
The known systems for spraying liquid by the action of a gas current do not make it possible to push the spraying until aerosols are obtained in a significant proportion; in these systems, the liquid is sprayed in the form of small droplets of varying sizes, but the largest of which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
bre are not small enough for the resulting mixture to exhibit aerosol properties.
The device according to the invention makes it possible to obtain a significant aerosol formation, thanks to. the provision, in the duct connecting the outlet end of the device at the place where the liquid mixes with the gas stream, of a flared chamber, located in the immediate vicinity of the place where the mixing takes place, which chamber causes a certain expansion of the gas and ensures vigorous stirring of the liquid sprayed by the gas stream.
By way of demonstration, one embodiment of the object of the invention is described below with reference to the appended schematic drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows an axial sectional view of a spray nozzle, and
Fig. 2, a similar fragmentary view of an alternative embodiment of the nozzle.
Compressed air, or any suitable gas used for spraying, arrives through the central duct 1 of a hollow needle 2 which passes through a chamber 3 formed in a housing 4 surrounding the needle and into which the liquid is introduced at 5. This liquid flows through an annular space 6 formed between the conical end 7 of the needle 2 and a conical seat 8 formed in the wall of the housing 4. The air-liquid mixture takes place at the outlet of the needle, in the inlet. 9 of the duct-going to the outlet 10 of the nozzle. Near its inlet 9, this duct has a flared chamber 11, in which a first relaxation of the. gas, a second expansion occurring at the outlet orifice 10 of the nozzle.
This chamber is shaped so as to produce a turbulence which causes the vigorous stirring of the liquid sprayed by the gas current and thus ensures further division of the droplets, as well as their electrification. For this purpose, the chamber 11 comprises a part
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
flared 12, for example conical, connected to the space 9, while the part connected to the outlet 10 of the nozzle may also be conical, cam shown at 13, FIG. 1, or flat, in particular cylindrical, cam shown at 14, FIG. 2. Tests have shown that this latter embodiment is very advantageous. The flared part 12 of the chamber 11 can be formed in the housing 4, and the other part, 13 or 14, in a spout 15 attached thereto.
The axial jet of compressed air and the converging annular stream of liquid cause effective turbulence in chamber 11, which significantly promotes aerosol formation. It is also thanks to the forecast of room 11 near the place OÙ! the gas and the liquid come into contact with each other, and the fact that the gas does not undergo its first expansion until after having come into contact with the liquid, that an appreciable increase in the proportion of aerosol contained in the spray jet
The various members of the nozzle, or some of them, in particular the tank 15, are advantageously made of a molded material, electrically insulating, for example porcelain, glass or bakelite.
It goes without saying that, without departing from the scope of the invention, it would be possible to bring the liquid through the central pipe 1 and the gas through the annular pipe 6.
The mounting of the needle 2 and of the nozzle 15 on the housing 4 can take place in any suitable manner, for example by screwing, and possibly in an adjustable manner in order to be able to modify the width of the annular duct 6 and / or the length of the chamber 11, for example for spraying liquids of a different nature.
