BREVET D'INVENTION.

Fig. 1 es': la coupe longitudinale d'un tube selon l'inven- tion qui est constitué par des éléments joints au mayen de man- chans ;
Fig. 2 est la représentation analogue dans le cas où le joint est fait à l'aide d'un manchon supplémentaire couvrant le joint ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
ou non transportables, tels que tubes, réservoirs et analogues, on devait employer ues laques ou aes vernis, matières qui ne sont pas vulcanisables et qui ne permettaient pas de réaliser des revê- tements suffisamment épais et non attaquables, cette réalisation rencontrait la, difficulté dérivant de l'encombrement dans le cas où on aurait tenté de vulcaniser dans l'air chaud, tandis que les chaudières destinées à cette opération ont en général des dimen- sions réduites ;

PATENT.
TUBES AND CONTAINERS IN FIBRO-CEMENT COATED
DEBONITE AND OTHER SIMILAR MATERIALS.
In industrial installations it is frequently necessary to use tubes and vessels intended to contain conesive liquids and gases. usually these tubes and containers are made of ceramic stoneware, and they are fragile, expensive and too heavy; they are also made of metal coated with protective substances, but in this case also there is the disadvantage of too high weight and price, and furthermore the metal is exposed to the edges of external agents.
The present invention aims to eliminate these drawbacks by adopting fiber cement (Eternit and the like) for the manufacture of tubes and containers of this kind, the inner surface of which is protected by a layer of vulea.nisable substance. , impermeable and unassailable, attached by vulcanization to the fiber cement wall to be protected.
The tubes and containers thus formed are stably resistant to atmospheric and terrain agents, they exhibit considerable impact resistance, are relatively elastic, impermeable and not attacked.

quacked by con @ sive liquids. The present invention is also characterized by the process which makes it possible to apply the protective layer to the internal surface of the tubes and containers, and by the arrangements making it possible to ensure the leaktight junction between the successive sections of the tubes while maintaining the continuity. overnight stay and the. non-attacability of the pipes.
In order to better specify the nature of the invention, it is described here with reference to the appended drawing which represents merely by way of illustrative but non-limiting example three embodiments, and specifically:
Fig. 1 es': the longitudinal section of a tube according to the invention which is constituted by elements joined to the sleeve mayen;
Fig. 2 is the analogous representation in the case where the seal is made using an additional sleeve covering the seal;
Fig. 3 shows on a larger scale the details of the sealing means employable in single sleeve joints.
In the various cases the fiber cement tube 1 is coated on the inside with a layer of ebonite, or other similar material 2 which prevents the seepage of liquid into the fiber cement wall. In correspondence of the junctions, the coating is folded back beyond the edge of the tube, so as to coat an area of the outer surface of the two tubes to be joined, to prevent a pressurized liquid exerting a thrust it may be appropriate that the end of the tube engaged in the sleeve has a rim 3a projecting outwardly.
The rim may be made up of the same substance which constitutes the internal coating of the tube. The seal is sealed by means of packing rings 3b, themselves also made of the same material, but vulcanized only enough so that they still remain sufficiently plastic and adherent to the contact walls.

also a packing 4 consisting of a graphitized and possibly lubricated asbestos @ate, especially when it is necessary to ensure the tightness for liquids at high temperature. A filling of adhesive and antacid cement 5 will mechanically remove them. effort,
tending to separate the tubes, and this effect may be improved by means of an outer sleeve 6 made of high strength cement (eg, fusion cement possibly reinforced with iron wires 7, or a metal network, or the like.
For tubes without a sleeve (Fig. 2), the joints can be made by bringing their ends into contact, with the possible interposition of a gasket 30 (which could usefully also be used in the case where the sleeve exists) , and said ends will be coated on a terminal outer area. The joint will be covered by an additional sleeve 2, which is sufficiently wider, and likewise coated in a similar manner, associated with the consolidating and sealing devices described above. to improve the sealing and adhesion of the anti-aid cement, it is advantageous for the surfaces constituting the coating of the tubular space to have circular grooves.
The coating can be done with a green sheet of ebony having the desired thickness which is applied to the surface to be pre-treated, possibly with a suitable adhesive, and which is vulcanized on site, under the name "ebonite. "This is understood to mean any substance composed of natural or synthetic rubber impregnated with sulfur in an amount sufficient to ensure cure after vulcanization and containing all other ingredients which are deemed suitable according to the rubber technology.
Coating of the fiber cement with ebonite had heretofore been applied only to flat objects which can be vulcanized in a press; for objects of other shape
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
transportable or not, such as tubes, tanks and the like, it was necessary to use lacquers or varnishes, materials which are not vulcanizable and which did not allow sufficiently thick and non-attackable coatings to be produced, this realization encountered the difficulty. deriving from the bulkiness in the event that an attempt has been made to vulcanize in hot air, while the boilers intended for this operation generally have small dimensions;
in the case of steam vulcanization, the fiber cement should have been prevented from being immersed in water, which would have moistened the contact surface with the coating, producing bubbles, protrusions and areas of detachment . this difficulty has been overcome by introducing steam into the tube and into the treated containers, by blocking the openings.
