la fig. 1 est une vue illustrant la phase initiale dudit procédé;

The invention relates to a shutter device and to a method for activating the device.
The sealing of orifices under difficult access conditions or in particularly hostile environments, such as the deep seabed or highly radioactive areas for example, has not yet found a satisfactory solution. We cannot indeed risk the life of human beings beyond certain limits and, when we operate remotely, for example by remote control, the precision required by certain operations is no longer achieved. This is particularly the case when it is desired to seal off elements of floating constructions or accidentally submerged ships, with a view to their refloating, for example.
The invention provides an original solution, technically and economically satisfactory, to problems such as those set out above. It is defined in claims I and 3.
An embodiment of the device according to the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the appended destiny, in which:
fig. 1 is a view illustrating the initial phase of said process;
fig. 2 is a view illustrating an intermediate phase of said method, the device thus illustrated being seen in section, and
fig. 3 is a view illustrating said process in its terminal phase, the watertight closure being achieved.
The closure device object of the invention consists of a tubular element 1 of circular, oval, elliptical or polygonal section for example, such as an elongated cylinder as shown in FIG. 1, closed at one of its ends 2. The other end 3 has a nozzle 4 intended to cooperate with a fluid transport system 5, such as a flexible tube for example, most generally connected to the nozzle 4 by through a means 9 intended to prevent the return of fluids, such as a non-return valve or valve for example. The side wall 6 of the tubular element 1 has several orifices 7, 7a, 7b, 7c ..., of small dimensions compared to the characteristic dimensions of the element 1, allowing the passage of fluids towards the outside.
These orifices are preferably arranged over the entire wall 6, symmetrically along the axis of the tubular element 1, so as to allow rapid and regularly distributed evacuation of the fluid towards the outside.
While the height of the tubular element 1 can vary from 0.1 to 1, or even 2 m or more, its diameter can be between I and 10 cm or more, the diameter of the lateral orifices 7, 7a, 7b .. being between 0.5 and 5 cm, or even more depending on the case. These values are however only given for purely indicative purposes, since it is obvious that it is for the person skilled in the art to adapt them to the nature of the problem to be solved, in particular to the dimensions of the orifice to be closed. .
The tubular element 1 is made of a rigid material such as a metal, steel for example, or a reinforced plastic or reinforced with glass fibers for example. In this case too, the choice of material will depend on the conditions of use of the device: in a liquid medium, for example, we will make sure that the nature and density of the tubular element are compatible with the pressure and density of the medium surrounding, in particular. Depending on the case, for example, the device may be ballasted with an additional load.
The device also consists of a flexible membrane 8, elastically deformable, impermeable to gases and liquids, arranged around the element 1 in the manner of a sleeve and fixed in a sealed manner around the periphery of each of the ends 2 , 3 of said element. The waterproof fixing of said membrane can be carried out using any suitable means, for example using cable ties 10 1 1 as illustrated in FIG. 1.
As indicated, the membrane 8 must be flexible and elastically deformable, so that it can perfectly match the contours of the orifice to be obstructed under the effect of the internal pressure exerted by the fluid. It must also be impermeable to liquids and gases, and sufficiently resistant to withstand the excess internal pressure exerted by the fluid and not to tear on contact with the walls of the orifice to be obstructed.
Materials suitable for the manufacture of such membranes are known; by way of purely illustrative example, mention may be made of synthetic or natural rubber, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or various polyesters.
The method for closing an orifice 12 consists in firstly introducing the device defined above, the latter being chosen so that its section is substantially less than that of the orifice 12 to be obstructed. As far as possible, moreover, the height of the element 1 will preferably be greater than the thickness of the wall comprising the orifice to be obstructed. Although this does not constitute an essential condition for the proper implementation of the method according to the invention, this ratio of respective dimensions makes it possible to obtain a sealed closure with maximum efficiency. Fig. 1 is a view illustrating this situation.
Once the device has been properly installed, for example by remote control, a fluid 15 is injected, the first function of which is to gradually inflate (fig. 2) the membrane 8 until it completely conforms (fig. 3) 13, 14 of the orifice 12.
The flexibility of the membrane 8 has in particular the advantage, under such conditions, of allowing an almost automatic centering of the tubular element 1, consequently an optimal distribution of pressures. The quantity of fluid injected will be such that at the end of the operation the maximum section of the device is at least equal, preferably greater, than that of the orifice 12, and that the beads 16, 17 have formed on either side of the edges 13, 14 of said orifice, as illustrated in FIG. 3. The sealing of the obturation is thus optimal.
For this phase of the process, the fluid used can equally well be a gas, a liquid or a mixture of liquids, or a suspension of pulverulent solid. During an operation in a liquid medium, for example on a seabed, the fluid 15 chosen will preferably be a liquid with a density close to that of sea water:
partition of the internal pressures will be all the more regular and it will be the same for the deformation undergone by the membrane 8.
The second function of the fluid 15 is to provide the closure thus produced with sufficient strength so that subsequent operations can be carried out without disturbance. The fluid will preferably be a liquid, a mixture of liquids or a gelable or solidifiable suspension. Such a fluid 15 may consist, in whole or in part, of the fluid used for swelling the membrane.
Liquids or mixtures of gellable or solidifiable liquids are known; it can be a liquid or a mixture of aqueous or organic liquids, for example with the addition of a suitable catalyst. By way of indication only, mention may be made, for example, of a hardenable resin, a liquid generating polyurethane foam or any other foam remaining rigid after hardening, or even a suspension of pulverulent solid such as a cement or a quick setting plaster.
Once the obturation is complete, it is possible, if necessary, to cut the pipe 5 used for transporting the fluid 15 and to proceed on the element thus obstructed in the subsequent operations, such as an injection of pressurized gas for refloating, for example .
