RFE(7TIONN.NTS AUX i'ROOEDES DE NETTOYAGE DES TUBES BOHAN-2 GEURS DE CHALEUR.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

RFE (7TIONN.NTS TO THE ROOEDES FOR CLEANING BOHAN-2 TUBES HEAT MANUFACTURERS.
The invention relates to heat exchanger apparatus, such as, for example, oil coolers, of the type which consists of a system of tubes mounted in a casing, water or another refrigerating liquid being of. circulate through the tubes and oil or other fluid passing over the outer surface of the tubes. After refrigerants of this kind have been in use for some time, deposits build up on the tubes and decrease the efficiency of the apparatus, and hence it is necessary to clean the tubes periodically. This is usually a tedious operation requiring removal of the tubes from the casing.
The object of the present invention is to make possible. ble cleaning the outer surface of the tubes in a simple and convenient way.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention comprises an apparatus with which a steam nozzle is combined, as well as means by which under the action of the steam passing through the nozzle a strong circulation of cleaning liquid can be established around the tubes.
In the accompanying explanatory drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a heat exchanger apparatus according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a partial elevational section of a heat exchanger apparatus according to a modified form of the invention. .
In the drawing, the enclosure of the apparatus is designated by a, and the tubes by b; the casing is provided with an inlet orifice o and an outlet orifice d for the oil or any other fluid intended to pass over the outer surface of the tubes.
To implement the invention as shown in Figure I, there is centrally or otherwise inside the casing a a tube e which at one end is fixed to the upper end plate f of the tubes b by a gasket hollow g, and which at its other end stops at a certain distance from the base plate h of the tubes. This last end of the tube e is widened externally and is located opposite a conical part or the like formed by the internal part of a hollow closing part t, which serves to close a hand hole provided in the plate h; this conical portion or the like serves together with the externally enlarged end of the tube to facilitate the flow of liquid escaping from the tube.
The packing ± is mounted in an opening provided in the end plate f, the wall of this opening being profiled as shown in order to form a seat for a shoulder with which the packing is provided. Optionally, the gasket can be used to secure one end of the tube to the base plate, the other end of the tube then being kept at a certain distance from the upper end plate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the outer part of the seal is screwed a nozzle for injection of steam i. Towards its inlet port, the nozzle i is arranged for fixing a pipe (not shown) through which the steam can be conveyed to the nozzle. Normally the nozzle inlet is closed with a plug 1.
The part of the gasket 5. disposed on the internal face of the end plate which supports it has side openings m, which are closed by the nozzle when it is in its lowest position in the gasket.
In this position, the end of the nozzle i on the side of the outlet is in contact with an annular seat n formed by the base of the gasket g; this seat and the end of the nozzle on the side of, the outlet form a conical nozzle having another corresponding * The nozzle i thus serves as a closing member of a valve intended to control the communication between the openings m-and the tube e , the other part of the val. ve being formed by seat n.
The parts of the gasket and of the nozzle i which are located towards the external wall of their end support plate are enclosed in a hollow part e forming a cover, this latter is removably fixed by means of screws or bolts to the plate terminal.
When it is necessary to remove the deposits covering the tubes b, remove the cover e and unscrew the nozzle i by a certain amount so as to establish communication between the side openings m and the tube e. Then the part of the casing a between the end plates f, h is filled with any suitable cleaning liquid, which is introduced by means of piping% attached to the casing. In addition, the closure plug 1 is detached from the inlet of the nozzle. This is then connected to the steam supply pipe and the latter will pass through the nozzle under pressure.
The vapor coming out of the nozzle forces the liquid to be sucked through the side openings
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
m provided in the packing, and pass through the tube e. As a result, the vapor serves not only to heat the liquid in the shell a, but also to establish a strong circulation of the liquid through the shell and the tube e, this circulation of the liquid serving to facilitate the removal of deposits attached to the tubes b.
At the end of the cleaning operation, the scum is removed from the envelope a through one or more normally closed outlet openings such as p, and the envelope is then emptied, the pipe to steam detached from the nozzle i, the closure plug is screwed into the inlet end of the nozzle; the latter is screwed in until it reaches its extreme internal position, in which it covers the openings m of the nozzle. trim, and the cover o is attached, the apparatus is thus ready to perform its normal function.
Instead of using the nozzle i as a closing member of a valve intended to control the communications between the openings m and the tube e, it is possible to mount a closing part of separate construction on the nozzle, or to can combine with the nozzle a valve closure part, separate and independently movable. If desired, the gasket carrying the nozzle and the tube can be removed when not in use; in this case the opening made in the end plate to receive the gasket can be closed by a separate shutter piece.
In the variant of construction shown in FIG. 2, a circulation passage e has been placed at one of the sides of the casing a (so that it has come with the latter or is fixed thereto). connecting the opposite ends of the casing. This passage is controlled by a valve which is normally closed, the closure member r of this valve being mounted in an adjustable manner on a cover s forming a hand hole and arranged with a view to closing one end of the passage e.
When it comes to opening the passage e before cleaning, we remove the cover
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and put it back in the reverse position (ie so that its external face is as much as possible inside), so as to leave the adjacent extremity of the passage freely open.
In the passage or duct e is mounted in any suitable position a vapor infection nozzle i, and if desired the part of the passage adjacent to the nozzle can be profiled so as to form a Venturi tube or the like.
WHEN it becomes necessary to remove the deposits from the tubes b, the valve closure member r is opened, and the casing a is partially filled with any suitable cleaning liquid, which is introduced through a piping fixed to the enclosure. Steam is then sent to the nozzle i and under the action of this vapor not only is the liquid heated, but a strong circulation of liquid is established through the envelope a and the passage e, omitting the circulation of the liquid. liquid considerably facilitating the cleaning of the tubes. At the end of the operation, the casing a is emptied after the foam has been removed and the passage e is closed by the valve, the refrigerant then being ready to continue its normal role.
The invention is not limited to the examples described above, oar it can have many applications.
Thus in the application of the invention to oil coolants or to other similar heat exchange apparatus of the type indicated in which a bypass pipe is already provided to connect the ends of the casing, use is made of of said bypass to clean the tubes, for this purpose, the bypass is provided with a valve and also with a steam nozzle. The invention can also be applied to heat exchanger devices in which the tubes are arranged horizontally . In
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In addition, several nozzles can be used instead of one to bring the steam through the tube or passage.
