The invention relates to a heat exchanger in which the heat exchange agents act on each other through tubular walls. The aim of the invention is to create a apparatus of this type which automatically stops the flow of the exchange agent passing through the tubular system in the event of a tube rupture, in order to avoid the risk of damage to parts of the apparatus which are not not designed to withstand the high pressure of the medium circulating inside the tubes, and to prevent the heat exchanging agents used from mixing in an undesirable manner and returning from the exchanger to the other. other devices or machines.
In order to ensure these various advantages, in accordance with the invention, a throttling diaphragm is placed in a duct connected to the tubular system of the heat exchanger before and after the exchanger, in such a way that in the case of of a rupture of a pipe it must occur at least on one of these two diaphragms a '

variation in the difference between the pressures prevailing on both sides of this diaphragm, this variation being used to influence a distributor automatically switching off the heat exchanger.
In the conduit in which the diaphragms are inserted, there may preferably be interposed before and after the exchanger, stop valves controlled by the distributor.
To the attached drawing is. schematically represented by way of example, an application of the object of the invention to a feed water heater.
Fig.l shows schematically an apparatus for heating feed water, in which the respective pressures reigning on each side of two diaphragms, inserted in the feed water pipe, one below and the 'other beyond the heater, act on one of the faces of a piston, assigned to the respective diaphragm, these two pistons being housed' in separate cylinders but rigidly connected with each other.
Fig. 2 shows part of a variant in which the two pistons are housed on both sides of a partition of a single cylinder which receives them both.
In the drawing 1 designates a feed water pipe and 2 a heater into which emerges through pipe 21 a heat exchanger fluid intended to heat up the supply water and which is brought into contact there with the pipe system. - area through which the feed water is delivered. food indicated by arrows A) a diaphragm 3 and, beyond the heater 2, a diaphragm 4. Below the diaphragm
3 is further interposed a stop valve 5 and, beyond the diaphragm 4 a stop valve 6.
The pressure prevailing below the diaphragm 3 acts via a pipe
7 on one of the faces of a piston 8, the opposite face of which is biased, via a pipe 9, by the pressure prevailing beyond the diaphragm 3. The pressure prevailing below the diaphragm 4 is transmitted by a line lo to one of the faces of a piston 11, the opposite face of which is urged, via a pipe 12, by the pressure prevailing past the diaphragm 4. The piston 8 is housed in a cylinder 23, and the. piston. 11 in a cylinder 24.
The two cylinders 23 and 24 are rigidly assembled together by means of a kind of sleeve 25, while the two pistons
8 and 11 are rigidly coupled by means of a piston rod 13 and rigidly coupled with a third piston 15 which is held by a spring 14 and which controls the admission of a pressurized liquid into a pipe 16. De this pipe 16 the pressurized liquid can go, on the one hand, by a pipe 17 to a cylinder 26 where it acts on the piston 2o which is integral with the valve 19 of the valve
5, and, on the other hand, by a pipe 18 to a cylinder 27 in which it acts on a piston 22 which is integral with the valve 21 of the valve 6.
28 designates a pipe fitted with a shut-off device
29 which is derived from the feed water pipe 1 below the valve 5 and joins this pipe again beyond the valve 6, thus making it possible to bypass the heater 2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The pipes 7, 9 and lo, 12 being arranged in the manner indicated in the drawing, the pistons 8, 11 and 15 in normal operation occupy the position shown in fig.l. But as soon as a tube rupture occurs at heater 2, there also occurs a change in the difference between the respective pressures on the two sides of diaphragms 3 and 4 since more water then passes through. diaphragm 3 and on the contrary less water through diaphragm 4. Said pressure difierences are also still subject to changes with respect to one another.
All of these circumstances result in moving the pistons 8,11 in the direction of an opening of the admission of the pressurized fluid to the pipe 16, and, consequently, to the pistons 2o and 22 so that stop valves 5 and 6 are closed automatically. In the event of a tube rupture, the flow of feed water through the tubular system of the heater 2 is therefore automatically stopped.
As explained in FIG. 2, the pistons 8 and 11 can also be housed in the same cylinder body 23 divided into two equal parts by means of a partition 24. This device allows a slightly more compact construction.
The system which is the object of the invention can also be applied in combination with heaters heated by flue gases, or with surface condensers etc., that is to say each time in a heat exchanger. - heat manager one of the fluids passes through tubes.
