Be it known that I, GEORGE F. PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles,in the county of Los Angeles and a State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Water Heater, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water heaters, and more especially to what is generally i0 known as an auxiliary water heater for use in connection with a boiler.
My improved device is so constructed that it may be readily secured in an opening made in the front plate or wall of the boiler l preferably below the water-line so that the walls of the circulating passages of my de-v vice will be submerged in the hot ,water in the boiler so as to heat the water in my device to a temperaturedesirable for domestic and other uses.
-The apparatus is so constructed that it is prac ically a unit that requires but a small amount of labor to install, and therefore is capable of being set up by inexperienced persons, or by skilled mechanics in a comparatively short time. Also, my water heater requires no special tools in installing thesame, and its structure is such that several units may be readily connected together by a@ piping or nipples when a greater quantity of hot water 1s desired. A further object of my invention is to provide a structure which is both economical in construction and of added'eiiiciency in operation in that the partition hereinafter mentioned may be much more cheaply manufactured than round pipe and may also be provided of less thickness thereby facilitating the heating of the water during its passage through the device.
I prefer to carry out my invention in substantiall he manner hereinafter more fully described, and as particularly pointed out in the claims. The main portion of my` deviceconsists of a hollow casting that comprises a cylir.- drical hollow casing 13 the end of which is flanged, as at 14, to provide a flat plate for mounting uponplate 1.1 around the opening and secured; 1n position by-boltsfrlvets or the like. The flanged end of casing 13 is 85 internally threaded to receive the threaded outer end ofa tube 15 that is closed at .its opposite end, as seen in Fig. 1, and prior to securing the structure I prefer to place a suitable packing or gasket 16 that com- 90 presses into the space between tube 15 and plate 11 when the structure is tightened into position. The ca'sing13- extends out from the boller .plate 11, as seen in Fig. 2, and its upper segment is provided with an upright dlscharge stub 17 that is internally threaded to receive the lower end of the hot-water discharge pipe 18, the axis of whichis transverse or at a right angle to the axis of cas-iI ing 13. Depending from the under segment of casing 13 is a cylindrical embossment 19, the axisof which is horizontally disposed and intersects the axisof casing 13, as seen in vFigures 1 'and 2. ln order to keep the currents ot water separated or continnousin both directions in tube 15 and casing i3, l. have employed a partition 23 of V-shape in cross-section that is inverted when placed in the tube and which extends to near' the inner end ot tube 15, as seen in Fig. l of the drawings. For ordinary domesticpurposes only a single. unit is necessary, but when eater quantities oil hot water are desired may make a lurality ot holes in the boiler alining horizontally and connect two or more casing; or units by nipples 30, as seen in Fig. ot the drawings, the ends out the nipples being secured intothe opposite ends or embossment i9 thereby forming a battory, it being understood each casing is provided with its respective tube l5 that extends into the boiler and is submerged in the water therein.

While l. have herein illustrated and described the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, it ot' course will be obvious that immaterial modications may be made to the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the principle ll have disclosed, and ll, therefore, desire it understood that such changes are fully contemplated as coming within the scope of the appended claims.

A unit for a water heater, in combination with a boiler, said unit comprising a cylindrical casing, a discharge stub in the upper portion of said casing, a hollow feed embossnient at right angles to the discharge stub extendin across the lower segment ot the casing and having ports at both ends, a tube extending axially from one end oit said casing into the boiler, a wall extending longitudinally ot said tube and casing whereby the same is divided into cool water and hot water passageways, a feed pipe connected with said feed embossnient, and
a discharge pipe connected with said dis f charge stub.
2. A water heater comprising in combinaf tion with a boiler, a plurality ot elements each consisting of a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing, a discharge stub extended upwardly therefrom at a right angle thereto, a horizontally disposed hollow iced embossment upon the lower portion oi said casing and communicatingawith the interior thereof; said embossment being disposed l tangentially of said casing and having ports at both ends, adjacent ports ot said elements communicating with each other, a tube secured at its outer end in said casing and extended axially therefrom into said boiler; said tube closed at its inner end, and a wall extending longitudinally of said tube and casing whereby the saine is divided into cool water and hot water passageways.

A waterheater comprising a cylindrical kcasing having a discharge stub in its upper segment, a hollow iced embossment opening at opposite ends extending tangentially across its lower segment and opening into said casing, and extended axially from one end ot said casing, a dividing element in said casing and tube whereby the same are divided into ingoing and outgoing passageways that com municate at the inner end of said tube opposite said casing, a closure for the outer end of? said dividing element within the casing, and means for rigidly mounting said clesure within said casing,

A water heater comgrising a cylindrical casing ha a disc ar e stub in its upper segment, a ollow f embossment extending across its lower segment and opening into said casing, a tube secured to and extended axially from one end of said casing, a removable partition consisting of a metal sheet bent to an inverted V-section that is disposed in said cas' and tube and terminating adjacent the en of said tube opposite the casing, a shoulder in said casing engaged by said disk; said shoulder provided with a recess in its upper segment in which the apex of said V-s'ection partition is seated and prevented from relative movement by the dlsk-securing means, and a plug screwed into the adjacent end of said casing to Kress ,said disk against said shoulder where y the partition 1s securely positioned in` the casing and tube and straddles the inlet opening of the. former.
