<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
1 ) sio2: I4 %; CaO: 54 %; Mgo: 10 %; Mno: 10 %;
Feo; 4 %; Na20: 3 % ; Spath fluor : 5 %.
1 ) sio2: 20,4 % ; FeO: 0,9 %; A1203: 27,7 %;
Mno: 1,1 %; Cao: 40,¯ %; Mgo: 7,6 %;
Tio2: 1,3 %
2 ) Sio2; 11,1 %; FeO: 0,6%; MnO: 0,2 %
Al2o3 : 40 %; cao: 44,3 %; Mgo: I,3 %;
Tio2 : 2,6 %. 0
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Process for the rapid production of particularly pure steel"
No. 334.774 of October 31, 1938 - - - - - - - - - - - for "Process for treating steels with a view to their purification", the Applicant Company has described a Duplex process in which low-grade steel into phosphorus, coming from a basic or acid converter or from another metallurgical apparatus, is then subjected to a short blowing, in an acid converter, in the presence of a body of which the oxide has a heat of formation. high and which is liable to oxidize by blowing air into steel, for example silicon; after what
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the act is optionally deoxidized by any known process.
Manganese can be added to the bath before blowing.
On the one hand, this process makes it possible to purify the steel with regard to impurities which cannot be eliminated by the action of a single slag or of a single operation at the cover- weaver; on the other hand, it imparts to the metal a temperature more suitable for the casting and the quality of the metal.
By the present invention it has been found that it was possible, instead of using an acid converter for the final purification and reheating of the steel, to use, in a process of the type mentioned above, a basic converter, with the advantages of such an apparatus, particularly in the case where the actual production of the steel is carried out in a Thomas converter, provided that a converter which is used as a second converter is not contaminated with phosphorous slag and the filling of which is not impregnated with such slag.
The short blowing in this second converter, in the presence of a body oxidizable by air, such as silicon, for example, then does not give rise to rephosphorization of the metal; which would occur if phosphoi-them slag was present.
The purification of the steel can be further improved, in particular with regard to sulfur, if the short blowing is carried out in the second retort in the presence of a molten or solid slag (or elements of a slag) rich in alkaline-earth and / or alkaline bases, but preferably alkaline-earth, and especially rich in lime and magnesia. The proportion of this slag relative to the steel bath must be sufficient so that,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
after the blowing and the corresponding formation of silica which is incorporated into the slag, the latter is still basic.
Instead of adding to the steel the proportion of silicon or other similar body just sufficient to give the metal the temperature necessary for casting, it is advantageous to add a proportion of silicon greater than that which is desired to burn, and not to burn this excess by too long blowing, so that the final metal still contains silicon.
Under these conditions, it is found that, after the short blowing, the slag, even if it has been added in the solid state, is perfectly melted and that it contains only relatively small amounts of manganese oxide and 'iron oxide.
Combustion by air, thanks to the presence of slag, is practically limited to silicon; loss of iron and manganese is almost zero. The metal is purified; sulfur content is lowered if the slag is used in a sufficient proportion so that it is still basic once the operation is completed; it is at the right temperature for casting; has good micrographic cleanliness and good mechanical characteristics.
In a Thomas steelworks, either a special converter reserved for the finishing of steel in accordance with the invention, or a normal converter from the steelworks whose lining is so slightly impregnated, will be used as the second converter, or the finishing converter. phosphorus that no rephosphorization occurs, for example after refurbishment of this lining. After one or more operations in accordance with the invention, the apparatus can be used in the normal operation of cast iron refining.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
phosphorous in order to complete the use of its lining.
The slag can be charged either liquid, which has the advantage of requiring only a lower combustion of silicon to bring the metal to the right temperature, or solid. The fusibility of this slag can be improved by introducing therein manganese oxide and iron oxide, which has the consequence of introducing manganese and iron into the bath by the effect of the short blowing, despite the presence of air, thanks to the reduction of these oxides by the silicon or equivalent body contained in the metal.
In the case where the slag is solid loaded, one can either load separately the elements of the slag, for example lime, alumina, sintered dolomite, manganese ore, or, which facilitates the fusion, constitute all or part of the load slag with previously melted slag.
For example, liquid or solid slags from the end of the Martin or electric furnace refining operation can be used (provided they contain little P2O5 if we want to produce a low phosphorous metal), even if it means adding a little lime and / or .dolomie to make them more basic. This method has the advantage of allowing the recovery of the major part of the manganese from these slags, the latter being reduced by the silicon or the like introduced into the metal bath.
It is also possible to use liquid or solid slags loaded both with alkaline earth bases and with alumina, and thus carry out in the basic finishing converter the operation described in the Belgian patent application filed by the applicant company.

EMI5.1
No. 355'973 of, February g, 193r - - - - - - - - - for: "Process for obtaining steels exhibiting great micrographic cleanliness". This process consists essentially in causing a slag mainly composed of alumina and alkaline-earth and / or alkaline bases to act on the steel containing an energetic reducing agent, the oxide of which has an acidic character, until this slag now only contains a very small amount of iron oxide.
Under these conditions, very particularly clean steels are obtained, from a micrographic point of view, and also possessing remarkable mechanical properties if the relative weight of the slag is calculated as a function of the steel treated and if one determines by experience the value of the addition of silicon or the like and the duration of the short blowing so that the final metal still contains silicon, for example more than 0.050% and that the silica content of the slag is not too high, for example less than 30%, at the end of the operation, the alumina content at this same moment being at least 20%. In this case, it is possible to use materials rich in alumina and in lime and / or in magnesia, for example commercial refractory cements, for the lining of the steel finishing retort.
It is possible, without drawbacks, - that the slag is simply alkaline earth and / or alkaline, or at the same time aluminous - add in the second retort all the desired addition elements, such as for example nickel , chromium, molybdenum. Thanks to the action of silicon, in the presence of a slag rich in alkaline earth or alkaline bases, these elements have no tendency to pass into the slag in the oxide state and the yield of these additions is excellent. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Moreover, the presence of silicon or of an analogous body in the steel makes it possible to introduce the alloying elements into the steel by putting in the slag oxidized compounds of these elements, compounds which are reducible by the. silicon or the like added to the metal; for example calcium molybdate or calcium vanadate if it is desired to introduce, respectively, molybdenum or vanadium into the steel. To ensure such an operation, a sufficient quantity of silicon or other analogous substance will be added to the steel so that the reduction of the oxidized compound in question is ensured to the extent necessary for the introduction of the desired quantity of element. alloy in the steel bath.
The various possible operating modes in the duplex operation: acid or basic converter - basic converter, according to the invention, are the same as those which have been described in the aforementioned patent application? 334.774 of October 31, 1938 for the acid or basic converter - acid converter process.
The steel dephosphorized in a basic converter or by vigorous stirring with a fluid oxidizing basic slag, according to known methods, is separated from its slag and transferred to a basic converter which is not soiled by phosphorous slag and whose filling is not impregnated with such a slag. There is added, either in the transfer ladle or in the basic converter, a body oxidizable by air and whose oxide has a high heat of formation, for example 9.4% by weight of silicon and 5.6% manganese.
We blow for a very short time, for example a minute, and we sink the steel in it @ -
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
possibly subjecting to a deoxidation by violent casting from above in an acidic slag, poor in iron oxide and very fluid, according to a known process. The operation can be carried out by adding to the second converter a slag rich in alkaline earth and / or alkaline bases, for example a slag having one of the following initial specific compositions:
1) sio2: 14%; CaO: 54%; Mgo: 10%; Mno: 10%;
Feo; 4%; Na2O: 3%; Fluor spar: 5%.
2) sio2: 17%; CaO: 60%; MnO: 7%; FeO: 7%; A1203; 5%; Fluorspar: 4%; this slag being in each case used in sufficient quantity (determined by calculation or by preliminary tests) so that it remains basic at the end of the operation.
Instead of a slag having a general composition such as that defined above, a slag mainly composed of alumina and alkaline-earth and / or alkaline bases can also be used for the same operating mode. that the slag no longer contains a very small amount of iron oxide, for example of the order of 1% by weight of the slag.
Such a slag will, for example, have the following final composition:
1) sio2: 20.4%; FeO: 0.9%; A1203: 27.7%;
Mno: 1.1%; Cao: 40.¯%; Mgo: 7.6%;
Tio2: 1.3%
2) Sio2; 11.1%; FeO: 0.6%; MnO: 0.2%
Al2o3: 40%; cao: 44.3%; Mgo: 1.3%;
Tio2: 2.6%. 0
In the above we have specified that the second
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
converter must not be soiled with phosphorous slag and its lining must not be impregnated with it.
But it must be understood that this does not have an absolute meaning and that, without departing from the scope of the invention, the converter may be soiled or impregnated with a small quantity of phosphorous slag, on condition that this slag does not 'does not lead to rephosphorization of the metal beyond the low phosphorus content that the final metal must contain.
