<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Descriptive memorandum in support of the patent application for: "BALLOTTANT SHUTTER USABLE AS ETANOHE HOLDER".
The shutter forming the subject of the present patent consists essentially of a shutter plate and of a supporting frame from which and in which said shutter plate is suspended.
Consideration of Fig. 1, which is a schematic sketch, will help in understanding the following.
A rigid shutter plate e P, normally planar (or bordered by a frame, projecting or recessed, of generally planar shape), is suspended, by means of one or more links L, preferably extensible and elastic, to a supporting frame C which surrounds it.
The frame Ç pivots on hinges or hinges so that the shutter plate P can be brought in front of and close to the bay B which it is intended to close.
A plane frame E, surrounding the opening, is fixed to the wall M in which said opening is made. This frame serves as a seat for the shutter plate.It can be replaced by the wall itself, if the latter is sufficiently well drawn up so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the plate can be applied to it without a gap.
A sealing body F is fixed either on the shutter plate or on the seat thereof. It is an integral part of the organ that carries it.
When the shutter plate P, brought by its supporting frame 0, is in front of and near the bay B (as shown in fig. I) a slight push will apply it to its seat, and this operation will be followed by tightening ,
It should be noted that if the links L are extensible, the sealing body t will not undergo, during tightening, any pulling or friction capable of damaging it or preventing it from fulfilling its function.
Inextensible links interfere with the normal movement of the shutter plate during tightening, which has the consequences of making the sealing body suffer and impairing the effect it is intended to produce. The drawbacks resulting from the use of inextensible links will be made negligible by a well-executed construction and assembly and by observing, for the assembly of the supporting frame relative to the seat, certain special provisions.
A clamping mechanism, which can be operated both from the outside and from the inside, is described below.
Fig. 3 shows, in elevation and in section, a swinging shutter constructed so as to constitute a gas shelter door.
The shutter plate 1 is a sheet steel box in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped. It is lined with sealing bands 2 and is suspended from the supporting frame 3 by means of chains 4 extended by springs 5. The frame 3 is provided with hinges 6 and pivots on hinges 7.
In the sectional view of FIG. 3, the hinges, hinges and suspension members are not shown. It is the same with regard to FIG. 4 which is an enlargement of the lower part of the sectional view of Fig.3.
Butoits (which are not shown in the figure) ar-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
retent the movement of the supporting frame when the plane thereof is parallel to the wall 8. A plane frame 9 surrounding the opening 10 is fixed to the wall and serves as a seat for the obturator plate. This bears, on its thick faces at the top and at the bottom (see fig. 3 and 4), projecting tabs 11. On the other hand, the upper and lower cross members of the supporting frame 3 are provided with protruding parts 12. arranged so as to constitute stops for the tongues 11. This device is intended to limit the amplitude of the sloshing and of the oscillations of the shutter plate.
The position of the plate in relation to the frame is adjusted by means of the nuts and locknuts 13 screwed onto the hooking members 14. These turn and slide freely in the upper cross member of the frame. .
The plate is provided with a ring (not shown) which allows it to be pulled towards oneself through the bay:
The progressive tightening of the shutter plate on its seat is effected by means of two cranks 15, one of which is placed on the right and the other on the left of the opening. These cranks act on inclined planes 16 fixed to the sides of the plate. The clamping mechanism is arranged and mounted as shown below.
A pipe 17, provided with a flange 18 at one of its ends and threaded at its other end, passes through the wall 8. A nut 19 serves to fix the pipe to the wall. A shaft 20, loose in the tubing 17, is fixed to a crank 15, placed on the side of the obturator plate, and to another crank 21 located on the opposite side. A sleeve 22, loose on the shaft 20, is placed between a stop pin 23 and the threaded end of the tubing 17.
The length of the sleeve'33. adjusts the distance of the crank 15 to the wall 8.
An arrangement intended to limit the sloshing of the shutter plate has been previously described. By means of the device shown in fig. 2, the frame and the plate are subjected to a reciprocal, continuous and elastic dependence, which avoids shocks by allowing sloshing. This device is placed, normally,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
above and below (fig. 2) of the blanking plate. It consists of a rod 24, flexible and elastic, maintained parallel to the cross member of the frame 3 by a part 25 fixed to the latter. The rod is engaged, by its end parts, in forks 26 fixed to the closure plate 1, forks between the teeth of which it can slide freely.
An advantage of this system is that the plate is constantly returned to the position which it should normally occupy in the frame.
Figs. 5 and 6 show a sealing body 27 of determined shape and indicate how to fix it. The shape is that of an angle bar, one side of which is thicker than the other. The sealing body is applied, by its most grooved wing, on the member 28 which. must support it..The fixing is done by means of screws 29. which, after having passed through the thin wing, are screwed into the support member. Washers 30 or the like may be interposed between the screws and the wing through which they pass.
Remarks.-
I) Instead of hanging the supporting frame on hinges or hinges, it can be fitted so that it can move on a rail placed above or below the bay. If the rail is located below the bay, it must be at a certain distance from the ground, because the clamping cranks must now be above and below the shutter, the bottom one must be located below the rail so as not to interfere with the movement of the frame carrier.
2) The clamping mechanism described above can be operated both from the outside and from the inside. In most cases, it will suffice that the tightening can be done by one. side only: the one where the shutter is located. It will not be necessary, then, for the crank shafts to be secured to and pass through the wall. They will be fixed at. supporting frame and will only be fitted with a crank. It will obviously be necessary for the frame to be kept parallel to the wall
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
before tightening is undertaken. The frame can be provided with hooks which will hold it in the desired position by engaging in rings fixed to the wall.
Instead of using, for tightening, cranks acting on inclined planes, it is possible to use 4 camshafts provided with operating cranks and rotating in parts fixed to the supporting frame; The cams act either directly on the shutter cover, or on intermediate parts fixed to it.
The frame can also be provided with elbow cross members in which are screwed pressure screws with handwheel or operating key. These screws act, by their free end, either on the obturator plate or on. intermediate parts por-. ted by it.
