<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to steam vehicles It
The present invention relates to improvements made to steam vehicles and is applicable in particular to railway locomotives but is not limited to this particular use. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple construction which enables a high speed machine or motor to be effectively employed to power a load wheel or a drive axle. Other objects of the invention are to provide the required strength of the parts or parts without undue weight and to facilitate assembly while protecting as many parts as possible from external influences.
According to the main feature of the present invention there is provided a steam driven vehicle comprising the combination of two steam engine cylinders placed parallel and side by side but spaced apart to rest in. the limits of the width between the knuckles or the wheels of the driving axle 'Seen in plan, of a fixed closed housing

to the cylinders, mounted on the driving axle and supporting the crankshaft or crankshaft of the machine and closed toothed wheels in the housing, which couple the crankshaft to the driving axle and located between the cranks of the machine, view in plan,
said crankcase comprising four flanges parallel or approximately parallel to the axes s of the cylinders and forming exactly or approximately a right angle with the axis of the crankshaft and spaced such that the two inner flanges which carry bearings for the crankshaft are placed between the cylinders of the machine, and that the two outer flanges, which may form part of the crankcase wall, are each placed outer-

or. wxt ment in relation to the center line @ each of the cylinders of the machine. The crankshaft of the machine can be placed above, below or on the same horizontal plane as the driven axle, depending on the space limitations available in each particular application.
For most applications it will be found more convenient to position the crankshaft above the axle and to leave a suitable gap between the lower side of the machine group and the level.

<'.f'017¯¯pfC <.J \ rail or road. 9. With the crankshaft in a plane higher than that of the driving axle, the crankshaft housing can be easily supported from the driving axle, and although the crankshaft is not located vertically at the top. above the driving axle but is located on the side of the cylinders thereof, it is possible to accommodate the machine in such a way that when viewed in plan, it is comprised between two adjacent driving axles without these the latter must be undesirably distant from each other and without the machine having to be made undesirably / short.
In this latter connection, however, it should be noted that the present invention is particularly suited to the use of machines in which the diameter of the cylinders and the stroke of the pistons are up to about 30 or 35 cm, these machines being
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
high-speed machines operating the driven axles through a gear mechanism. These machines, it will be appreciated, can be short and in certain circumstances it is preferable to operate each axle by a separate machine.
The arrangement of the flanges in the crankshaft housing is such that the outer flanges and the inner flanges absorb between them the thrust of the pistons and the cylinders, while the inner flanges since they carry crankshaft bearings at a rate of one on each side of the gear mechanism, ensure proper resistance / feedback is offered to and from the crankshaft and that the gear mounted on the crankshaft which transmits control to the drive axle is supported suitable.
Another feature of the invention concerns the mounting of the crankshaft in its housing. According to this particularity of the invention, to allow the crankshaft to slide through one end into its operating position in the crankcase, carrying two anti-fric- tion bearings mounted on it and each comprising a seat piece. intended to be fixed respectively to one of said inner flanges, three consecutive flanges have openings aligned and graduated in dimension such that the inlet opening is the largest, and the opening in that of the three flanges, which is:
further from the inlet opening is the smallest, so that the seat piece placed farthest forward can reach that of the three flanges, which is located furthest inside and there take support, and that the second seat post, which is of a general size larger than the seat piece placed furthest forward, can reach the other inner flange and rest on it. The inlet opening will be provided with a detachable closure and it may be appropriate in certain circumstances to spare in the other flask.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
an opening fitted with a closure on the outside to aid in the assembly of the parts which are enclosed in the crankshaft housing.
According to another particularity of the invention, the lower part of the crankshaft housing is arranged so as to serve as an oil collector and is divided into a series of separate tubs opening into the crankcase via their upper part, and 'one or more of which the oil is removed by the oil circulation system of the machine, another of these tubs being so arranged that a gear of the train connecting the crankshaft and the driving axle reaches there .
The advantages of this arrangement are that the toothed wheel will not turn continuously in an excess of oil, while the pumps intended for lubrication are supplied from a relatively quiet reserve of oil and not disturbed by the rotation of the oil. the cogwheel. There will always be some oil drained or sprayed into the toothed wheel so that this wheel will not turn without lubrication but, on the other hand, the excess oil will be squeezed out by the wheel and will be sprayed. or will flow into the other bucket (s) where the pumps are fed.
The pump (s) for the machine's oil circulation system should be operated by eccentrics or the like mounted on the drive axle and enclosed in the crankshaft housing. The number of these pumps can be chosen at will. If two oil pumps are used, the eccentrics are attached to the shaft so that the pumps are offset 180 in phase so that a more uniform oil flow is ensured.
In order that this particularity of the invention and the others can be understood more fully, a constructive embodiment of a double-acting machine according to

the invention will be described below by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction details set forth in what follows.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine, some of the parts being shown in section taken along lines 1-1 of Figures 2, 3 and 5; Figure 2 is a plan of the machine, partially in section taken along line 2-2 of Figure 5. In Figure 2 the oil pump shown in Figure 1 is omitted; Figure 3 is a partial section through the axle and rear of the crankshaft case taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1, but further showing certain parts which, in a locomotive, would be associated with the machine; Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 1, and Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Like reference numerals @ designate like parts in all drawings.
The machine shown in the drawings comprises two parallel horizontal cylinders 10 and 11 which, as shown in figure 3, are spaced so as to be situated between the knuckles 12 or the load wheels 13 of the driving axle 14. The machine cylinders 10 and 11 are connected by separately formed butt guides to the crankshaft housing 17. This housing is closed and is mounted on the driving axle 14 and supports the crankshaft or elbow shaft 18 in a plane greater than the plane of the axle 14.

The crankshaft housing includes four ribs or flanges 23, 24, 25 and 26 which are placed parallel to the axes of the cylinders 10 and 11 and perpendicular to the axis of the crankshaft 18. The two outer flanges 23 and 26 form part of the wall of the crankshaft housing and are each located externally with respect to the axis of each of the machine cylinders. The two inner flanges 24 and 25 carry crankshaft bearings and are located between the machine cylinders.
The crankshaft 18 is intended to be slipped by an ex-. end in the operating position in the crankshaft housing, carrying two anti-friction bearings 27 and 28, each comprising a seat piece 29 and 30, respectively, these pieces being intended to be fixed to said internal flanges 24, 25, respectively. As emerges from FIG. 4, the three consecutive flanges 24, 25, 26 have openings aligned and graduated in dimension. if we. The inlet opening in flange 26 is the largest and the opening in flange 24 is the smallest. It is thus possible for the two seat pieces 29 and 30 to reach the flanges 24 and 25 and to rest thereon.
The flange 23 has an opening allowing access to the different parts; and this opening as well as the opening of the flange 26 are closed by covers 31 and 32.
The lower part of the crankshaft housing is designed to serve as an oil collector. This oil collector is an element 33 formed separately and, like the adjacent face of the main part of the crankcase of the crankshaft, it is formed so as to constitute with this face the two opposite halves of bearings for the crankshaft. 'axle 14. The oil collector is divided by partitions 34 and 35 into three separate buckets or buckets 36, 37 and 38 which open into the housing 17

by their upper part. In the two tubs 36 and 38 advance pipes 39 and 40 for the oil discharge. These pipes transport the oil to one or more oil pumps placed outside the crankshaft housing; the casing of one of these pumps is shown at 41 in Figure 1.
The cylinder 42 of the pump opens into the oil collector of the crankcase and constitutes a casing for the end of the eccentric connecting rod 43 transmitting the command to the piston of the pump. The eccentric link 43 is actuated by an eccentric 44 mounted on the axle 14. In FIG. 2 there is shown a second eccentric link 45 and a second eccentric 46 for actuating a second po. mpe. The aforesaid gear wheel 20 advances into the oil tub 37. The advantages of this oil tub arrangement have been described above. Each machine cylinder 10, 11 is separated from the interior of the corresponding stock guide 15, 16 by a stuffing box 47 which allows passage of the piston rod 48.
There is a connection 49 (see Figure 2) between the interiors of the stock guides near the stuffing boxes and each stock 51 carries, as has been proposed previously, one or more scraper rings 50.
Each cylinder of the machine is provided with a valve box 55,56 which is manufactured with it. Each valve box comprises two inner cylindrical sleeves 57 and 58, the ends of which are spaced apart but which are aligned to receive without play the wide ends of a curved cylindrical piston (piston-valve) 59 which controls the ad- mission and the escape of steam to and from the cylinder of the machine to which it is assigned. The sleeve 58 is extended to arrive out of the valve box and is connected to the housing by a conical screen 60.
Inside the extended sleeve 58 is received without play a curved butt 61, and at 62 is shown a purge port which always lies between the two wide ends of the hanging butt.

the machine functionment.
The drawers 59 are each reciprocated by a radial distribution mechanism, the form shown being an adaptation of the Hackworth mechanism. A connecting rod 63 is provided which extends more or less horizontally from the butt 61 through the screen 60 inside the housing.
There, it is hinged to a more or less vertical connecting rod 64 a little above the lower end of the latter. The upper end of the connecting rod 64 receives a rotational movement of a crank knob 65 on a shaft 66 which is supported in a bearing 67 carried by the flanges 24 and 25 in the case. The shaft 66 carries two of these crank buttons 65, one for operating each of the drawers.
The lower end of the connecting rod 64 is articulated to a .coulisseau 68 which can slide in an arcuate slide 69 which can oscillate and whose concave surface is directed more or less towards the drawer.
Two of these slides 69 are provided and they are supported in a casing 70 which is pivotally mounted in the casing to oscillate about an axis parallel to the axis of curvature of the slides. At one end, the casing is extended beyond the housing to be attached to a lever

the center line of the arched slides. It will be understood that all the parts of the radial distribution mechanism, other than the gear shift lever and the connection between the latter and the slides, are enclosed in the crankshaft housing or in covers fixed to this housing. The bearings for the ends of the casing 70 are formed of halves constituted respectively by the lower part of the casing and by a cover 74 fixed thereto.
The shaft 66 carries a gear wheel 75 by which it is actuated from a gear wheel 76 on the crankshaft by the intervention of an intermediate wheel 77, the wheels 75, 76 and 77 all being of the same size. . The shaft 66 completely mounted in a support sleeve 85 can be inserted through an opening in the upper part of the housing provided with a large cover 86, and put in place through the bearing cap 67. Two openings 78 and caps 79 are provided in alignment with the shaft 66 to facilitate machining of the crankshaft housing and bearing cap 67.
In British Patents Nos. 223,303 and 274,203 machines are described which in some respects follow the same general lines of construction as the machine according to the present invention. In Patent No. 223,303 there is a cylindrical butt guide in alignment with the piston cylinder, the adjacent ends of the piston cylinder and stock guide being separated from each other and closed separately.
In Patent No. 274,203 there is only one closure separating the piston cylinder and the butt guide, but the latter patent relates only to single-acting machines. Compared to patent 223,303, the machine According to the present invention can be made larger since the closure at one end of the orosse guide for retaining oil in the crankcase of the crankshaft is omitted.
It should be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction details set forth above. For example
