<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Method and apparatus for the manufacture of hollow bodies, shells and the like".
The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the manufacture of cup-shaped bodies, particularly shells and the like, and it also includes, as new products, the shells and the like produced. by the process.

As described in the patent, the application of which was filed on April 29, 1937 in the name of the Company known as: DUNCAN STEWART & COMPANY LIMITED and Mr. John Burrell TALBOT-CROSBIE, to manufacture a hollow body of which one end is not perforated and in a single pass, one can use a punch and a ring-die whose internal end is momentarily closed by a plug or a stop to form a stamping chamber in which the closed end of the hollow body is shaped by forging followed by upsetting.
According to the invention, an independent part forming a base plate is detachably centered on the top of the stopper and in the first phase of the operation is embedded in the bottom of the shell in such a way that one could call the grain of metal of the base plate lies across that of the metal of the hollow body,
The base plate part can be provided from below with a centering pin which engages in a corresponding cavity of the stopper or this temporary fixation can be made at any other suitable location.
The side surface of the base plate may be flared from below or provided with grooves or ribs, so as to make its embedding in the bottom of the shell more intimate.
The base plate can have a flat surface and the hot metal of the shell can be stamped or forged into the base plate. The top of the base plate can be bent so as to be flattened by the pressure exerted on the billet during the first upsetting step.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The base plate can be covered with a suitable flux or with metal. It can be the same metal as the shell or a different metal.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is a vertical section showing the punch ready to act on a billet and FIG. 2 is a similar view showing the billet partially forged or upset to form the solid end or bottom of a shell. Fig. 3 shows at. on a larger scale, the base or reinforcement piece shown in Figures 1 and 2. FIG. 4 is a side view of a modified form of the base part.
As shown in the drawings, 1 indicates the die ring which is fitted into the lower end of a bore 2 of a part 3 and which has a die chamber 4 into which a blank or billet 6 is forced through. a punch 5 after the billet 6 has been introduced into the bore 5 in contact with the ring 1. The bottom of the die chamber 4 is temporarily closed at the start of the forging operation by a stop 7 to allow formation in chamber 4 of the solid bottom of the shell as seen in figure 2.
A base plate 8 is disposed in the center of the upper face of the stop 7, while the solid bottom of the shell is held in the chamber 4 of the die and as seen in figure 2, the plate 8 is embedded in the bottom of the shell and what may be called the grain of the base plate is distributed transversely to that of the shell.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The plate 8 is centered on the stop 7 by providing it with a stud 9 which is engaged in a cavity formed in the stop and the stud is cut at the end of the operation when the parts are removed.
As can be seen, the lateral surface of the plate 8 is inclined or flared to ensure it is embedded in the bottom of the shell.
Figure 4 shows a modification of the plate indicated at 8a. Its upper surface is curved and during forging it collapses and flares into the cavity formed by the engagement of the base plate in the bottom. of the shell.
