<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Cet oeillet
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Brake handle for bicycles.
The present invention relates to brake handles mounted on the handlebars of bicycles, and it more particularly relates to a connection between this handle and the two brake cables (front brake and rear brake) which automatically determines the compensation or the The movement of the two cables is balanced so as to ensure exactly equal braking on the front and rear wheels of the bicycle.
A few non-limiting examples of the embodiment of a handle in accordance with the invention are shown, part in side elevation, part in section, in the accompanying drawing.
In the first embodiment, fig.l, the handle 1, of any desired usual shape, is mounted on the pivot 2 carried by the stem 3 removably attached to the glidon 4 of the bicycle.
As is known, the handle has, on its lever or lever attacked by the hand, a section preferably substantially in a semicircle, and, on its small arm, a section substantially in an inverted U, so as to fit with game on the gallows. The latter
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
carries the usual stop 5 against which the handle rests in the rest position.
6 is the front brake cable and 7 that of the rear brake each of these cables is housed in a sheath 8, these two sheaths being held against the stem by the clamping nuts 9.
The two cables 6-7 pass through holes or slits made in the stem, to end inside the handle; the ends of the two cables are attached, by means of nipples 10, to the ends of a lever 11 pivotally mounted at 12 in the small arm of the handle. The two arms of the lever 11 being of the same length, this lever, by its pivoting, determines the compensation or the balance of the movements of the cables 6 and 7 when the handle is lowered.
In the example of fig.2, the lever 10 'is straight, and gives the same result as in fig.l; however, it comprises two other arms or stops 12 ′ which limit the amplitude of the pivoting, in one direction, by the meeting of the upper arm 12 ′ with the rounded back of the handle, and, in the other direction, by the meeting of the lower arm 12 'with a stop such as 13 carried by the handle or by the stem 3. The purpose of this limitation is to ensure that one of the two brakes can still operate in the event that the cable of the den would come to break.
In the form of lafig.3, the pivoting lever is replaced by a freely rotating pulley 14, and around which passes a chain 15, the two ends of which are joined, by nipples 16, at the ends of the cables 6 and 7; here the pivot 2 of the handle 1 is carried by the flange integral with the stem, the small arm of the handle thus embracing the handlebars. This construction allows to give less height, less projection to the stem.
Finally, in FIG. 4, the two cables 6 and 7 are welded to a common nipple 18, for example in the form of a thin plate secured to an eyelet 17 pivotally mounted in the handle. This carnation

or this plate could also include, as in FIG. 2, stops or lugs limiting the pivoting in the event of one of the cables breaking.
CLAIMS.
1. Improvement in brake handles for bicycles, characterized in that the two ends of the front and rear brake cables are attached to the handle by the intermediary of a part capable of pivoting about an axis carried by the handle, inside the latter, the two cables attached to this part, in such a way, with respect to the axis, that, in the pivoting movement of the handle, the said part, by its pivoting around its own axis, automatically determines the balance of the amplitude of the displacements of the two cables which, without this, would be unequal.
2. Improvement to the brake handles according to claim 1, characterized in that the pivoting part to which the ends of the two brake cables are attached, is a simple straight or angled lever, pivoting in its middle.
3. Improvement to the brake handles according to claim 1, characterized in that the pivoting part is a small pulley, on which passes a chain, the ends of which are attached to the brake cables.
4. Improvement to the brake handles according to claim 1, characterized in that the pivoting part is an eyelet carried by a small plate to which the ends of the brake cables are welded.
