BERWZCTI±'WEU,±NT8 AUX APPAREILS DE SAUVETAGE DU PERSONNEL DES lifAVIRES ET, PLUS PARTICULIERFMEUT, DES 8IUS-ilRINS
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

BERWZCTI ± 'WEU, ± NT8 TO RESCUE DEVICES FOR LIFE PERSONNEL AND, MORE PARTICULARLY, OF 8IUS-ilRINS
The present invention relates to improvements to apparatus for rescuing ship personnel and, more particularly marine tanks, said apparatus being used to supply breathable air to the ship's personnel when the latter is submerged, for example, when having been sunk, it rests on the bottom of the sea.
The object of the invention is to constitute devices of this type which are simple, efficient and absolutely safe to operate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In accordance with the invention, the rescue devices defined above comprise a sealed compartment, provided on the ship and capable of containing the staff, two air hoses, intended to put the interior of said compartment in communication with the vessel. external atmosphere, above the surface of the water in which the vessel is submerged, and pumping devices intended to draw breathable air into the compartment through one of the pipes from said atmosphere above the surface water and, at the same time, forcing air from said compartment into said atmosphere through the other pipe.
The two pipes can be flexible and combined with a buoy intended to bring their upper end to the surface, from the point where they are normally stored, for example. from a winch or winches inside or on the deck of the ship, and to maintain said pipes in communication with the atmosphere, above said surface.
The life saving apparatus according to the invention has the considerable advantage that, while being simple in nature and resistant to inexperienced users, which is important considering the cases of distress in which it must certainly be used, it effectively guarantees the safety of the personnel of the sunken ship with regard to the supply of said personnel with breathable air, without requiring the storage and use of an oxygen supply, to the regeneration apparatus of air, equipment of personnel by means of breathing apparatus. All the personnel need to do is assemble in the safety compartment, which is then closed, after which the pumping units are put into operation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
By using two air hoses, both terminating in the outside atmosphere, above the water surface, the interior of the safety compartment can be maintained practically at atmospheric pressure, which eliminates the need for high power pumps. For example, pumps can be reduced to simple hand-operated bellows, although, of course, any other form of pump, mechanically or hand-driven, can be used,
The subject of the invention is shown schematically, by way of nonlimiting example, in the accompanying drawings, in its application to a marine scus. Figure 1 is an overall section, showing part of the submarine and the rescue apparatus in operation.
FIG. 2 shows, in elevation and on a larger scale, a construction detail described below. Figure 3 shows, in section and still on a larger scale than Figure 1, a construction variant of the b'ouée intended to support the aeration pipes.
In Figure 1, the rescue apparatus represents in accordance with the invention comprises a sealed compartment 1, which can be located at any point of the submarine, a double-acting bellows and continuous flow 2, maneuverable at the hand, two flexible aeration pipes 3 and a buoy 5. The aeration pipe 3 extends from a region above the buoy 5, to the periphery of a storage winch drum 6 and it communicates, beyond this drum, with the outside of the chamber 1, by means of a rigid extension 7 which connects it to the two orifices 8, 9 located at the opposite ends of the bellows. The other air hose 4 goes
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from the region above the buoy 5, ends at the winch 6 and communicates with the interior of the compartment 1 by means of a rigid extension 10.
The extensions 7, 10 can advantageously ccmmuniquer aveo flexible pipes arranged around the winch drum, by means of air passages in the axis of said drum.
The pump 3 comprises two bellows 11, 12 with opposing effects separated by a common partition 13. The partition
13 can come and go against two fixed end partitions 14,15, under the action of an operating rod 16.
Each of the end partitions 14, 15, loses an intake valve with unilateral action, in communication with the extension pipe 7 and an exhaust valve, with unilateral action opposite to that of the intake valve, communicating with a breathing air delivery nozzle from the pump. If desired, the partition 13 can be fixed and the end partitions 14,15 can be arranged so as to receive a reciprocating movement. In this case, the valves would be arranged in the partition 13. It is also possible to provide, around the bellows, a protective baitier.
The aeration pipes 3, 4 terminate at their upper part in a rigid section, the shape of which is clearly indicated in FIG. 2. Said rigid portion has a U-shaped curvature 17 and a gooseneck curvature 18. The purpose of the U-curvature is to prevent seawater which might have entered the tube beyond the curvature 18 from reaching the flexible part of the pipe.
If desired, the U-shaped curvature 17 can communicate with a drainage compartment 19, provided with means for extracting the water which enters it. Likewise, the orifice of the curvature 18 can be protected against the influx
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of sea water, for example when a blade breaks on the buoy, by means of a plug 20, in the shape of a trough, articulated at 21 on the swan neck, so as to normally occupy a position apart from the orifice, but to turn upwards on its articulation, until the orifice is blocked, as soon as the water hits it from bottom to top.
The rigid upper ends of the aeration pipes are mounted on the buoy 5 which, therefore, when released from its resting position immediately above the winch drum 6, into a compartment 22 provided in the submarine for this purpose, rises to the surface, taking with it the pipes 3, 4, unwinding from the winch.
The buoy may constitute or carry a signaling device intended to indicate the location of the submerged ship and it may also be provided with a telephone 23, communicating, for example, with the watertight compartment 1.
The aeration pipes can be fitted, at their upper part, with unilateral action valves which open, one inward and the other outward.
The first will be fixed to pipe 3 and the second to pipe 4 and, to prevent water from invading pipe 3 when the pipes are hoisted towards the surface by buoy 5, said pipe 3 can be combined with components, such as for example a reserve of compressed air, itself combined with a valve for closing the extension tube 7, so as to temporarily fill the pipe with air, we sufficient pressure to overcome the pressure of outdoor water.
According to the variant embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the buoy comprises a flotation compartment @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
closed 24 and, above this, a cover 25, at the upper part of which terminate the rigid upper parts of the aeration pipes. The cover 25 communicates freely with the external atmosphere by means of openings 26, on the side, said openings being protected against the ingress of sea water, and any water which may reach the interior through. these openings can flow through the scuppers 27 at the bottom of the wall of part 25 of the buoy.
When desired, the bellows pump 2 can be combined with any primary motor, intended for its actuation. if necessary, for example a small electric motor or a small internal combustion engine which can be coupled, so as to be able to be disengaged, with the actuating rod 16 of the pump.
