<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La fig. 1 est une vue en élévation latérale d'un dispositif établi conformément à l'invention;
La fig. 2 en est une vue en plan;
La fig. 3 esr une vue en élévation latéra- le du cadre dans une variante de réalisation ;
La fig. 4 est une vue en coupe suivant la ligne 4-4 de la fig. 3;
La fig. 5 est une vue partielle d'une variante de réalisation de l'invention;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
la fig. 6 est une vue partielle et à plus grande échelle de la roue arrière du véhicule muni d'un mécanisme de roue libre;
la figé, 7 est une coupe à plus grande échelle suivant la ligne 7-7 de la fig. 6;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
sieurs tours.
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

.Parements for velooipedic vehicles "
The present invention relates to a velocipedic vehicle and more particularly to a vehicle propelled by the user who stands on the footrest board of said vehicle and who shifts his weight on said board. The invention relates to a velocipedic vehicle which can be propelled by the user in an easy manner and with a relatively high speed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Attempts have already been made to establish a toy-type velocipedic vehicle in which a platform or footboard is supported between two wheels spaced apart from each other in the longitudinal direction, the board in question being connected to the rear wheel. through 1-'intermediate a. eccentric axis system @@@@@@.
These devices were of the usual type of scooter and included scooter wheels having a diameter of between 18 and 23 cm. Such devices have been shown to be impractical and have been, as far as the applicant is aware, abandoned because of their defect.
The Applicant has discovered that by making significant modifications to the above-mentioned type of vehicles, the device not only becomes practical, but it can be transformed into an efficient and easily maneuverable transport mechanism having a speed capable of rivaling that of the vehicles. bicycles. The reasons for the failure of the scooter-type devices and which cause the advantage of the new device to become apparent will be deduced from the detailed description of the invention.
The attached drawing shows the device which is the subject of the invention in a preferred embodiment:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the frame in an alternative embodiment;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 3;

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
fig. 6 is a partial view on a larger scale of the rear wheel of the vehicle fitted with a freewheel mechanism;
the figure, 7 is a section on a larger scale along line 7-7 of FIG. 6;
Fig. 8 shows a detail 'seen in section along line 8-8 of FIG. 6.,
In the example shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a footrest form or board 10 is suspended between a front wheel 11 and a rear wheel 12. The board 10 may be made of any suitable material. In this example, a flexible hickory board is used, the rear part of which is notched to provide a housing for the wheel 12.
Fixed on each side of the wheel housing. and disposed substantially along it are metal supports 13 which are connected upwardly at 14 so as to form substantially vertical legs 15 for supporting the eccentric axis 16 of the wheel 12. supports 13 are preferably linked by means of a U-shaped connecting member 17 which is integral with the aforementioned supports 13. The U-shaped member 17 constitutes a support for the mudguard 18 which extends above the wheel 12 and which is fixed to the footrest board 10 at a point which is just in front of the wheel housing. The rear part of mudguard 18 is held by a pair of arms 19 which are fixed to the axle of wheel 12.
If desired, a seat 20 can be supported by the vertical front portion of the mudguard 18.
Wheel 12 may be formed in any suitable manner as long as it has sufficient development for each rotation of the eccentric axle linkage system, as will be discussed in detail below. In the example shown in the drawing, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
bicycle wheel having a diameter of /? 0 cm. is provided with a central hub 21 connected to the rim by means of spokes 22. The hub is preferably provided at a point eccentrically disposed with ball bearings (not shown) intended to receive a pin 23.
Instead of using a central metal hub 21 in which the ball bearings are arranged eccentrically, it is possible, if desired, to use a simple ball bearing hub of usual construction, as is the case in bicycles, hub which can be fixed at a point disposed eccentrically in the wheel by means of spokes of different lengths connecting the aforementioned hub to the rim; the hub can also be mounted at a point disposed eccentrically in a disc wheel (solid wheel).
The support member 13 has an enlarged part 24 which is fixed to the axis of rotation 23.
On the front end of the board 10 is fixed a metal connecting piece 25 provided at its upper end with a tubular guide 26. A handlebar pin 27 passes through the tubular support 26 and is provided with cylindrical bulges 28 in engagement with each end of the tubular member 26. The lower end of the axle 27 is provided with the usual fork 29 intended to receive the wheel 11 and fixed to the axle 30 of the wheel in question. It is possible, if desired, to place a mudguard 31 above the wheel 11. The upper end of the handlebar axle 27 can be provided with the usual handlebar 32.
The metal connecting piece 25 disposed at the front end of the board 10 comprises
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
fork arms 33 interconnected and fixed to the upper part of the aforementioned board 10. A third central branch 34 passes below the board 10 and is screwed onto the underside of the latter.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the construction of the frame is substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the difference that the foot-rest is constituted by an upper wooden board 35 reinforced at its lower face by means of U-shaped irons 36 extending in the longitudinal direction. Bixed to the top board 35 are the same metal brackets 13 and attached to the front end of the platform is the same metal connecting piece 25 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The method of construction shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 make it possible to obtain an undeformable frame in which any tendency of the lower part or of another part @@@@ to bend under the weight of the user is eliminated, which prevents any loss of energy by this system.
In the variant shown in FIG. 5, the board 10 is connected by its front end to a tubular support 37 by means of an elastic member 38. In this mode of construction, the frame gives way to the place where the Insulation 38 is located, but not at d Other points, the advantage of this arrangement being that the deflection is accomplished at the front end of the frame, which results in reducing the amount of angular movement of the board 10 in use. of the machine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In fig. 6, 7 and 8, the rear wheel 12 is shown with a freewheel mechanism.
In this method of construction, the spokes 22 are connected directly to a ring or collar 39 mounted on a roller bearing 40 carried by the hub member 41. On a coffee ring 39 is located, fixed in the vicinity of its outer periphery, a series of inclined cams 42 having recesses or grooves 43 between their high points. The cams are preferably formed as shown in FIG. 8, a cam protrusion slightly projecting the height of the other cam protrusion, so that a locking butt 44 is obtained. A locking tooth 45 mounted on a bar 46 is arranged to enter a groove. lock 43.
The bar 45 is fixed so that it can pivot at 47 on a hub 41, spaced guides 48 being provided in the vicinity of the outer end of the bar 46 to prevent any lateral displacement of the bar under the action of a force. . On the inner face of the bar 46 is a compression spring 49 which pushes the inner end of the bar outwards and which normally holds the locking tooth 45 in one of the locking grooves 43 of the bar. ring 39.
Means will now be described for pushing back the internal end of bar 46 and thus unlocking the connection between hub 41 and ring 39. As can be seen more particularly in FIG. 7, the hub 41 comprises a ball bearing 50 in which is mounted the rolling pin 51 provided at its ends with cones 52 having their inclined shoulders 53 in contact with the balls of the bearings 50.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The ends of the axis are fixed in the supports 13. On one wing of the support 13 there is a yoke 54 in which an elbow lever 55 can pivot. The free end of the elbow lever carries a cylindrical part or ring 56 threaded. on the neighboring cone 52 and organized to engage with the inner end of the bar 46. The other end of the angled lever 55 is connected, via a rod 57, to another lever elbow 58 mounted so that it can pivot on a vertical branch 15 of the support 13. The lower end of the elbow lever is connected via a rod 59 to a traction lever 60 which is mounted so that it can pivot at an intermediate point on a yoke 61 and which is provided with a pedal 62.
OPERATION
After having started by pushing the vehicle with sufficient force to allow it to remain upright, the user climbs upright on the board and then shifts his weight so as to apply it with all his force on the part. rear of the board when the axis reaches the position shown in fig. 1, and so as to make its weight act as little as possible on said board when the axis reaches its lower position and moves upwards towards its initial position, movement thanks to which the user propels the vehicle forward and increases the speed . The constant displacement of the weight at a rate which corresponds to the lifting and lowering of the axle of the wheel 12 produces the energy which is used by the eccentric linkage system with the rear wheel.
While a slight sag
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of the frame, sagging due to the board 10, can occur in the construction mode shown in figs. 1 and 2, this sag is rigorously eliminated in the variant shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. ' In the modified embodiment shown in fig. 5, the deflection takes place where the resilient link member 36 is located rather than in any other part of the frame. In the construction mode shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the whole frame oscillates around the front wheel axle.
When actuating the freewheel device shown in FIGS. 6-8, the spring 49 normally pushes the inner end of the bar 46 outwardly so as to bring the locking tooth 45 disposed towards the outer end of the bar 46 into engagement with the locking groove 43. It should be noted, as can be seen in FIG. 8, that the shoulder or projection 44 serves to block the tooth 45 when the latter slides along the cams 42 and forces it to enter the groove 43.
To release the ring 39 from the hub 41, the user lowers the pedal 62 so as to press the ring 56 against the inner end of the bar 46 by means of the connecting rods and the angled levers, as in This can be seen more particularly / outside in FIG. 7. The locking tooth 45 is thus kept in contact with the locking groove 43. The weight of the board and the frame then maintains the hub 41 in the lower position shown in FIG. 6, while the ring 39 rotates on the rollers 40 of the hub as if it constitutes the center of the wheel. The uprising and
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the lowering of the wheel are thus eliminated and the user can thus freewheel down a hill as he would with a bicycle.
When the user releases the pedal 62, the reverse action occurs, the spring
49 pushing the inner end of the bar 46 outward and the locking tooth 45 sliding on the cam 42 to enter the adjacent locking groove 43.
A most important characteristic of the new vehicle is constituted by the dimensions of the driving wheel or rear wheel or more exactly by the ratio between the circumferential development of the wheel and each revolution of the eccentric axis device.
It has been discovered that if a wheel of a scooter-type vehicle having the usual diameter between
15 and 23 cm. or slightly larger, the pulses caused by the lifting and lowering of the axle are so frequent that it is physically impossible for the user to develop any power. In other words, the vehicle of the patitte type does not take into account human possibilities and the rhythm necessary for actuating such a toy vehicle is far beyond that to which the human body can be adapted. To keep the device in the upright position, it is necessary for the user to move it at a speed considerably greater than the speed of walking.
When this happens the driving wheel which has a circumference between 46 and 75 cm. requires that the displacement of the weight forwards and backwards, ie two operations, take place in an extremely short time, which makes it practically impossible to actuate the device; even if the device can be kept running for a while

short, any appreciable change in speed is out of the question. If, however, the dimensions of the wheel are about three times the size of the operation surprisingly smooth and efficient, with the development of considerable power and speed.
With a drive wheel moving from approximately 2.15 to 2.44 m for each lifting and lowering of the eccentric axis, there is a sufficient time interval for the user to move his weight in line with the axis and with a speed who regularly goes in. increasing.
The Applicant has discovered that the vehicle runs perfectly with wheels having diameters of .66 cm., 71 cm. and 81 cm. Driving wheels whose diameters increase to reach 1 meter and even more allow to achieve a satisfactory Vehicle. It is possible to implement the invention with wheels of smaller diameter down to 50 cm., But this with much less satisfactory results because the walking impulses with a wheel of 50 cm. are so frequent that they make the operation difficult. Wheels with a diameter of less than 38 cm. are, in the applicant's experience, unusable as driving wheels in a vehicle of this type.
The important point is the distance traveled by the wheel for each rotation of the eccentric axis. We. can provide gear connections by means of which the wheel can be actuated faster than the eccentric axis, so that for a single lifting and lowering of said axis the wheel can perform more than one.

sieurs tours. The result of such a construction is essentially to increase the distance traveled by the wheel for a single rotation of the eccentric axis. In the exemplary embodiment shown in the drawing, a large wheel has been shown and it is preferable to use a large wheel for reasons of economy and simplicity.
Another important point of the invention is the way in which the platform or footboard 10 is suspended at a very low height above the ground. The low profile construction shown in the drawing is important because the user must be able to jump on the board and get off easily when stopping and leaving the vehicle.
A raised board supported, for example, according to a: Joint passing through the axis of the front wheel and through that of the rear wheel of larger dimensions would be unusable owing to the risk of falling and difficulties in actuation.
When using an elastic board 10, the user is able to bend the board not only when he shifts his weight on said board, but also when he actuates the handlebar 32 by pushing it back and pulling it towards. him. The lowered position of the board 10 allows the handlebars to be easily maneuvered to flex the aforementioned board due to its distance from said board, although it is also possible to use a substantially stronger board. Thanks to this method of construction also, the user is able to control the flexing of the board by controlling the movement of the handlebars and, consequently, that of the axis of the handlebars.
The suspension of the plan-

che in a lowered position close to the ground allows the user to jump with ease on the board and to descend by jumping, at the same time that the support and therefore the control that the user in question is considerably increased. is likely to exercise through the axis of the handlebars.
In the embodiment clearly shown in FIG. 1, the dotted lines 63 indicate the lower position of the board 10 and show the arc in which the board moves for the actuation of the device. It should be noted that the dotted lines showing the low position are substantially horizontal.
The seat 20 can be used not only when the vehicle is coasting, but also

In other words the user applies his weight on the seat when the eccentric connection is at the top and he does act its weight forward when the eccentric connection is in step, thus simulating the holding of a rider on his mount.
It is obvious that the device described above and shown in the appended drawing can undergo any modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention, the detailed description given above for an example of application. , not limiting in any way said invention.
