<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Patent. improvements to press stud type fasteners.
The present invention relates to well-known forms of fastening devices for clothes in which each device consists of two button-like members intended to be attached respectively to the two parts or parts to be fixed together and intended to be attached to one another. 'Another by the introduction of a button projecting from one of the members in an opening of the other member so that this button is gripped by elastic grippers contained in the latter member. These types of fasteners are sometimes known by the general name of elastic dome fasteners, but when made in accordance with the present invention they are more appropriately referred to as spring-loaded snaps.
The invention has been devised with the main aim of providing a construction of the member 4 the gripping spring (which with a view to

the explanation will be called in the following the female organ) which allows the introduction and the catch of the button of the other organ in the ordinary way but in addition ensures that this button is securely locked in the female organ when Tension is exerted on the fastener with such force that, under ordinary circumstances, it would tend to separate the two members. This construction remedies the possibility for the fixing device to give way when it is subjected to a force, in the usual form of a fixing device with an elastic dome or with a button.
The present invention also comprises other characteristics which are indicated more especially below during the description of the details of the invention.
This description will be made with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig, 1 is a plan view of the female member;
Fig. 2 is a plan view from below thereof;
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken through line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
Fig. 4 is a plan view and

Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the female organ taken by the line 6-6 of FIG. 1;
Fig. 7 is a similar section of the female organ, showing the button organ, in elevation, in its normal locked position in the female organ;

All figures in the drawings are drawn on an exaggerated scale in order to clearly show the features of the

construction. In fact, the fasteners can be made in any size generally used for these categories of devices.
According to the present invention, the female member of the device is made of the usual metal plate of the desired shape and having the rim bent downwards in the well known manner. Its opening b receiving the button is, however, provided with an extension in the form of a narrow slot ± extending from the opening over a small distance.
This slit-shaped extension is made of a width which is less than the diameter of the button head d of the button member, but is slightly larger than the diameter of the button shank, so that the head of the button button may, when engaged through opening b, fit by sliding in the extension to behind the edges thereof to hold the button in this extension, in a manner which is already known in this kind of devices.
The present invention provides, however, that the button is controlled in such a way inside the female member that it is maintained normally in the opening] proper to be able to function in the usual manner for these devices during use. , and particularly when the two members are moved apart, but in such a way that when lateral tension is exerted on the assembly, the button slides in the extension to be thus locked in a manner preventing removal as long as it is removed. The effort remains. When the tension stops the button returns to its normal position.
For this purpose, a new form of the spring used to engage behind the head of the button characteristic of these fixing devices has been combined with the female member, and this spring cooperates with the opening 1 and the extension. -a to act in such a way that it allows the introduction and removal
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the head of the opening under the usual force employed, engages, when the head is introduced, behind the latter by closing on the rod and also controls the entry of the button rod in the extension, by sliding , so as to prevent it normally from entering, This impediment is of such a nature that it gives way when a force is exerted to slide the rod in the extension, but that it acts to expel it when this force is deleted.
For this purpose, the opening is surrounded, on the inside, by a flange f which, however, does not exist on the edge of the extension c. The rim is pierced with suitably placed slits. A length of elastic wire j is used to hold against the back of the organ while engaging the rim a in the known manner, this spring has a shape such that its middle is curved in g at a certain distance in the space enclosed by the rim 1, at a point opposite to the entry into the extension c.
The two ends of the spring are then conducted around the respective sides of the member and are doubled in a circle and curved inwards, as in h, coming from the opposite side to approach from the opposite sides of the extension and curl then respectively outwardly across the surface of the opening b and into the slots formed in the flange 1, which thus serve to hold the spring in position for engagement with the button of the button member .
It can therefore be seen that by approaching under the space enclosed by the extension .. ± and then moving away under the opening, the ends of the spring serve to act jointly with the part g to engage behind the head of the button in three points, when the head has been pushed back into the opening in the usual manner, and will yield to release the head when the two members of the device are pulled apart.
These ends oppose-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
will also have elastic resistance to the passage of the button shank in the extension, to keep the shank normally in line with the opening, but will open up to allow the shank to pass through the extension when lateral tension is exerted on the members of the fixing device, as indicated by the dotted lines in FIG. 7.
It has been found preferable that the fasteners have the shape of an equilateral triangle, as shown in Figs. 1 to 7, so that in the female organ, the opening ± and its extension c can be arranged along the perpendicular to one of the sides passing through the opposite vertex, with the end of the extension occupying the center of the triangle. This member of the fixing device is attached to the article in question with the extension disposed in the alignment along which the force is directed. The button member has its button arranged in the center of the triangle so that this member can be attached to the part of the corresponding article regardless of its position on that article. 'fixing member may however have a circular shape as shown in Figs, 8 and 9.
