<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Et afin que l'on puisse bien comprendre comment ces carac. téristiques peuvent être pratiquement réalisées, l'invention sera décrite ci-après plus en détail dans son application aux lampes dites tubulaires, en référence au dessin annexé qui représente, mais bien entendu à titre d'exemple seulement, un mode préféré d'exécution, et dans lequel : Fig, 1 montre, en coupe longitudinale, une lampe tubu- laire suivant l'invention;

@
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PATENT OF INVENTION IMPROVEMENTS TO TUBULAR AND SIMILAR INCANDESCENCE LAMPS
The invention relates to tubular incandescent lamps, to discharge tubes and other tubes or lamps, in which one or more current inputs (or outputs) are arranged on the wall of the tube or lamp, and relates in particular to the organization of these current inputs (or outputs).
In accordance with known arrangements, the current input wires are simply embedded in more or less tapered protuberances of the wall of the tube, which presents various drawbacks, in particular of great fragility and of a sealing offering not all desirable waterproof guarantees,
In addition, when the lamps or tubes are to have bases, the aforementioned protuberances do not generally provide a suitable fixing base, preventing the bases from detaching and / or rotating relative to the tube or lamp.
Still further, separate exhaustion means must be provided on these tubes or lamps.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the invention is above all to remedy these drawbacks and to provide lamps or tubes whose seals are perfectly waterproof, firmly anchored on the lamps or tubes, not fragile, and providing a suitable base for fixing the bases. .
In addition, these seals can easily be combined as a whole with exhaustion means, thereby avoiding separate exhaustion tubes.
In order to satisfy these desiderata, in accordance with the invention, on the one hand what is known in the art as a "lamp base" and which comprises, in principle, a section of glass tube is made. of suitable conformation, in which the input son (s) is or are sealed by coating and, or pinching, and, on the other hand, an opening is formed on the wall of the tube or lamp, advantageously provided with a rim or collar, suitable for allowing the engagement of said foot, which is then sealed to the opening by the known means of the fusion of contiguous portions of the elements to be joined.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the foot formed, or the collar of the opening of the tube or exhaustion lam-, or else the junction of these elements, is provided with means, in particular a tube of 'exhaustion which is sealed in turn after exhaustion and, or filling of the tube or lamp.
And so that we can fully understand how these carac. teristics can be practically achieved, the invention will be described below in more detail in its application to so-called tubular lamps, with reference to the appended drawing which represents, but of course by way of example only, a preferred embodiment, and in which: FIG. 1 shows, in longitudinal section, a tubular lamp according to the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a cut made in a sealing of the input wire in the lamp, in the process of being established.
Referring to fig. 1, 1 designates the body of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
lamp or tube and 2 the filament ', mounted on a support 3 which, in the example, consists of a' glass tube, or the like, maintained in the desired location for example by spring wires 4, s 'winding by several turns around the tube 3 and bearing against the wall of the tube 1. In this way, easy assembly and a suitable centering of the filament 2 are obtained.
The latter receives the current by electrodes 5, retained in the ends of the tube 3, passing through the wall of this tube at 6 and extended beyond a certain length.
At these electrodes 5 are joined at 7, by the usual means, the input wires 11 sealed in the body or tube 1 as shown.
To achieve such seals, a "foot" is first established, constituted in the example by a section of glass tube 9, one end of which has been flared as in 10 (fig. 2) and in which one engages an input wire 11 so that it extends beyond the two ends. The end opposite the recess is then heated to such an extent that it sags and encases the wire 11 in a glass button 12, which can then be pinched if desired to. improve or conform the junction.
On the other hand, after having heated the tube 1 to the desired location and to the extent necessary, an opening 13 is formed there, the edges of which are straightened towards the outside of the tube, forming a rim or flange 14, substantially circular. , whose diameter is that of, or approximately that of, the flared portion of the foot.
The "foot" and the corresponding opening in the tube being thus prepared, after making the junction 7, the foot is engaged in the opening 13, as shown in FIG. 2 for an intermediate position of engagement, and the edge of the collar 14 and the flare being brought into contact, these two elements are united by simultaneous fusion, obtaining a seal similar to that shown to the right of fig 1.

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
If by a seal of this kind one wishes to empty, and possibly introduce into the lamp any desired gas, one could: either join to the collar 14 a section of tube known as exhaustion, by forming an opening in this collar and welding said tube, or provide the foot with a similar tube prior to its sealing in the opening 13, or else join together, at the time of sealing, the collar, the foot and the exhaust tube, or else, assemble the exhaust tube to the seal already performed, each time in such a way that communication remains between the exhaust tube 15, shown in broken lines associated with the left seal of FIG. l, and the interior of tube 1.
After exhaustion and possibly filling, the tube 15 is itself sealed in the usual manner for a tube of this type, as shown in solid lines in the seal on the left of FIG. 1.
As it is easy to realize, one thus obtains a perfectly ethanol sealing of the input wires, one eliminates the need for a separate exhaustion tube, at the same time that the foot and the collar form a relatively massive and not very fragile, supporting without inconvenience the manipulations of manufacture and use.
This assembly provides a large and strong base for mounting the sockets if the lamp or tube is to be provided with them, as shown at 16 in Figure 1, these sockets being attached in the usual manner.
If it is desirable to strengthen the fixing of these caps, to prevent them from rotating or detaching, as in the tubes of great length and which must operate in suspended positions, the periphery of the outer edge 17 can advantageously be provided with the seals, or the body wall of the latter, of a number of small glass droplets, as indicated at 8 for the right seal in Figure 1, or else one could form on this edge, or on the body of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
sealing, a protruding bead, obtained by adding molten glass or by hot crushing, or even by forming at the outer edge of the collar 14 a flare 18 as indicated in broken lines in FIG.
2, the reunion with the flaring of the foot leaving the desired bead remaining,
It will be noted that in the left-hand seal of FIG, 1 the sealed end of the tube 15 already provides an additional means of fixing the base 16, preventing the latter in any case from rotating or coming off.
As goes without saying, and as has already been suggested, it is understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment more especially described and shown, nor to the tubular lamps chosen as an example, but that it encompasses, on the contrary, variants and equivalents, as well as other applications.
