<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
fila.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
su.

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Pour la plupart des tissus même, on uti- lisait des dispositifs spéciaux destinés à réduire au mini- mum cette tension nuisible, et l'on était arrivé à construis re des appareils dits "sans tension".Dans la présente invention, au contraire, on pourra chercher à régulariser le couple de freinage automatiquement si possible, par exempt en utilisant un frein à ruban,tendu non pas par un poids libre, mais par l'intermédiaire d'un levier sur lequel le poids pourra coulisser;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
La constitution spéciale du tulle élastique, plus perméable aux liquides, vient exagérer ce défaut. Il devient donc nécessaire ,pour le tulle élastique, d'en effectuée une correction aussi complète que possible, et dans ce but, sans chercher à supprimer les causes qui pro- duisent le renforcement de la teinte des lisières, en se contente de compenser cette teinture plus foncée des bords par une augmentation de l'intensité de couleur de tout. la partie centrale, Pour cela. on arrose cette dernière seule, avec le bain de teinture lui-même ,que l'on pompe dans le fond de la barque à travers des grillages de fil. tration;

DESCRIPTION MEMORY filed in support of an INVENTION PATENT application residing at 89, rue Hippolyte Kahn in Villeurbanne, Rhône, France for: Dyeing process for elastic fabrics.
We know how difficult the elastic fabrics made with rubber threads or similar specifically elastic material are to dye in a regular manner and this drawback arises from the intimate contact between the rubber threads and the weft threads, which prevented the dye from impregnating. completely textiles, especially where the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
spun.
It is to remedy this drawback that the Applicant Company has devised the improved method of piece dyeing which is the subject of the invention, which consists in that, during the dyeing, the fabric is not only broadened as is done. usually, but subjected to an appreciable elongation in one of the two directions, longitudinal or transverse and possibly in both directions, so that the rubber threads as they elongate decrease in volume and cease to be in intimate contact with the other threads constituting the fabric; the latter can thus be completely impregnated with the dye in which it is immersed.
The invention also relates to embodiments of the invention, in particular in the case where the dyeing apparatus is of the well-known Jigger type.
The extension then takes place by exerting on the roll of fabric during unwinding a forceful braking sufficient so that, by elastic deformation, the part of fabric which passes into the dye tank is stretched in a proportion ranging from from 15% to 100 and even more.
In addition, the feeder and feeder rollers are provided with brake drums forming reverse freewheeling wheels, so that each of the rollers alternately functioning as feeder and feeder can be braked when it is being unwound while the other is not braked and must be driven in rotation, without removing the braking weights.
Finally, the curved guide bar or widening can include an angular setting device with micrometric adjustment so as to adjust the amplitude A
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
elongation in the transverse direction. In addition, grapple oars can optionally be used when the elongation in the transverse direction must be very large, for example greater than. 30 %.
The measurement of the elongation can be carried out, both in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction, by the ratio of the numbers of trellises or gratings per centimeter, when the fabric is in the unstretched state and when 'it is in the elongated state.
Another object of the invention consists in coupling by any transmission such as a chain or pinion transmission the two rollers of the widening bars in order to avoid periodic phenomena of increase and decrease in tension during loading. dyeing.
Another object of the invention is to provide, during the dyeing process, means for regularizing the dyeing of the edges of the elastic fabric so that they are not darker than the rest of the fabric. For this purpose it is possible to carry out additional watering of the central part of the fabric, that is to say of the part of the fabric extending to a certain distance from the two edges.
It is also possible to provide the cylinder on which the tissue is wound with appropriate flanges or cheeks, which eliminate the lateral contact of the mass of wound tissue with the surrounding space, or else produce a complementary compression of the edges of the tissue, by example by means of two small cylinders or side wraps mounted towards the ends of the rollers of expanding bars and against them, which wraps compress the two edges of the fabric.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
su.
According to a variant, the apparatus may comprise, instead of side scarves, a single scarf extending over the entire width, possibly arranged to produce a stronger compression on the edges than in the center or else only a rubber squeegee arranged in the middle. sight of each expanding bar roll and removing by pressure suitably adjusted along its length, the excess liquid that could contain the fabric mainly at the edges.
Another object of the invention consists in adjusting the winding of the woven fabric on its cylinder in such a way that its width is constant; for this purpose, the action of the widening bars is adjusted, for example by varying the angular position of the bar by hand. or part of the bar.
The description which will follow, with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of example, will make the manner in which the invention is carried out clearly understood.

Figs. 12 and 13 are side and plan views of an improved apparatus including manual adjustment of the angular position of the spreader bar.
Fig.14 is a variant of Fig.12 and 13 in the case where each half of the bar is adjustable.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing (fig. 1 and 2) the Jigger apparatus comprises a tub forming a dye bath and through which passes the fabric which unwinds from a roll d to wind up on a roll o; each of said rollers alternately plays the role of feeder and unwinder, the drive taking place by a transmission shaft m with angle pinion no. and an olapot clutch or other member shown in FIG. 2.
The oscillating frame e is attached to the tank, at the ends of which the widening bars f1 f2 and the guide rollers are mounted. The winding and unwinding rollers are keyed on shafts c1 d1 which can be braked by drums c2 d2 subjected to the action of braking bands h i controlled by weights k 1 or in any other suitable manner,
A roohet c3 d3 or other similar device forming a freewheel is interposed between each of the shafts c1 d1 and the corresponding brake drum c2 d2, but the ratchet wheels have reverse teeth, that is to say that the devices freewheeling act in the opposite direction.
Under these conditions, les.deux trains hk and 1 1 being constantly in engagement, one produces, thanks to the free wheels, an energetic braking of the roller d during unwinding while leaving on the contrary free the envi- raging roller so that the latter can be trained
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
by the transmission shaft m and exerts a traction on the tissa, b.
This traction, acting against the braking force produced by the brake i 1 causes a. elongation of the fabric b in the longitudinal direction, by elastic deformation of the threads of said fabric and it is only when the elongation has reached a determined value (depending on the amount of braking) that the fabric b moves to wind up on / in the tub @ not the roll a when unwinding from the roll d. The tissue therefore / only stretched flat and wide as for ordinary fabrics composed of inextensible yarns, but in the state of elongation, this elongation being able to reach a maximum.
Relatively large age. As an indication, it can be pointed out that the braking forces can reach a ton and more.
When all the fabric has been fed onto the roll c, the fabric unwinding operation is performed in the reverse direction, the free wheels automatically transferring the braking from one roll to the other.
While the tissue b passes through the bath, it is not only in an elongated state but it is well developed in the transverse direction thanks to the bars f1 f2. In accordance with: The invention, it is possible to adjust the inclination of each of said bars so as to erase it or, on the contrary, to give it an appropriate angular position, the adjustment preferably taking place by a micrometric control. as shown in fig. 6 'and 7, by means of a screw acting on a wheel r wedged on the axis f of rotation of the bar f1 or f2.
It should be noted that when the bar has the position close to that shown in FIG. 6, it produces, owing to the tension given to the fabric b, an enlargement of the fabric, so that the latter, on opening
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
allows the dye bath to penetrate to the depths. fabric.
The widening bar can be replaced, once the adjustment has been found, by a non-cylindrical roller with a profile similar to that indicated at F3 in fig.8.
It is desirable, in order to obtain as even a dyeing as possible, to work with as constant an elongation as possible. But a natural cause opposes this: the diameters of the feeder and unwinder rollers, which respectively increase and decrease in diameter, thus varying the braking and the elongation which result from it. A similar drawback does not exist in the Jigger as it was used until now, because it only needed a 'lengthening', that is to say a regular passage, without folds.
For most of the fabrics themselves, special devices were used to reduce this harmful tension to a minimum, and so-called "tension-free" devices had been constructed. In the present invention, on the contrary, we can try to regulate the braking torque automatically if possible, by exempt by using a tape brake, tensioned not by a free weight, but by means of a lever on which the weight can slide;
the automatic displacement of this weight can be obtained by a feeler roller constantly resting on one of the fabric rollers and controlling by its movements the displacement of the weight,
In order to minimize the need for this adjustment and in some cases easy to avoid, a further appreciable modification of the ordinary Jigger will be
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
made by increasing the diameter of the rolls of fabric as much as possible, by doubling for example, or even by tripling the diameters usually employed.
In this way, the relative difference in tension as a result of the variations in diameter of the rollers. considerably reduced, especially when the apparatus will be used with relatively short part lengths.
Of course, by appropriate adjustment, the combined elongation and widening can be used as required, or else the elongation only.
By comparing with ion dyes made according to ordinary processes, the process object of the invention, on a Jigger or any other apparatus giving an elongation, makes it possible to obtain ta) a perfect unison as a result of the supp @ of the differences in tightening due to the different weft tensions, on the warp. b) the elimination of breaks which generally occur when dyeing heavy fabrics. c) perfect penetration. d) intact tissue without displacement. e) regularization of the tissue as a result of the combined action of elongation and enlargement of the. fabric while passing through the dye bath at high temperature.
This regularization is explained by the. reduction of the tensions of the rubber threads under the influence of heat and the reinstallation of vegetable or animal textile fibers under the influence of elongation and widening.
This last action makes it possible to obtain tissues of perfect flatness despite the irregularities of
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
raw material /, while without extension the finished fabric still has a very unfavorable blistered and curled appearance.
The rollers used in practice receive a large amount of piece fabric and must be subjected to a high braking moment; they must therefore be very robust and come in the form of massive drums with appreciable inertia, and when they are loaded with tissue they are then capable of storing a large quantity of energy. If we take into account the elasticity of the fabric, we understand that the following phenomenon can occur when the controlled roll comes into operation, the fabric included in the loop going from one roll to another is stretched more than It would not do this if the operating speed was reached because the fabric must overcome not only the resistance generated by the brake but the inertia of the braked roller.
When the latter has acquired a certain speed, the tension decreases but does not settle at the value which it should acquire because the braked roller, which has been launched under the influence of a high tension , now unwinds too much fabric; the tension drops excessively, the speed of the braked roller decreases and the same phenomena are renewed and may become periodic.
The subject of the invention is also improvements made to the machine described above and thanks to which it is possible to overcome the detrimental influence of the inertia of the rollers on the regularity of the tension of the fabric and consequently on the quality of the product.
One of these improvements consists in reducing the diameter of the rollers, the mass of which is, in fact, mainly concentrated near the rim.
Another improvement applied alone or in conjunction with the first consisted of coupling to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
roll during unwinding a regulator of any known type modifying the braking of the roll. according to the speed of the latter and tending to standardize this speed.
As a variant or in combination with the first of the preceding improvements, it is possible to provide for the coupling of the two rollers since one roll must receive as much fabric as the other delivers it; one can for this purpose, use any transmission but with the interposition of a differential or its equivalent in order to take into account variations in diameter of the rollers since one receives fabric and the other loses some. .
Better still, it is possible to couple them together by any transmission such as a chain transmission or. with pinions, the two widening bar cylinders f1 f2, as is shown schematically in fig 9 where it can be seen that the pinions or chain wheels t1, t2. wedges on the axes of the rollers g1 g2 are connected by a chain u.
The angle which the fabric b makes in passing over these g1 g2 rollers is small but sufficient to give, although their surface is smooth, an adhesion with the tisstz strong enough to cushion effectively and eliminate the periodicity detrimental to unwinding as specified above. above and obtain a continuous unwinding of the fabric at constant speed *
A particularly interesting advantage of the chain coupling of the widening bar rollers is the elimination of "waxing" of the elastic fabric pieces. Indeed, previously, cyclical unevenness of unwinding produced, as already. indicated, unevenness of color and marl in some cases slippage of the weft.
But that was not the only drawback
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
deny: the unevenness of unfolding produces friction between them, suocéssive coils rolled up on the cylinders. These frictions produced hassles on the surface of the fabric comparable to slug traces. These same traces could also be produced when the malfunction of the roller at some point caused a stoppage of a spreader bar roller; the friction of the fabric on the stationary roller also produced shoe polish.
Any waxing of the parts disappears by the combination of the rollers *
An olassic disadvantage of jigger dyeing is the "edge effect" which is the darker dyeing of the edges of the fabric.
The special constitution of elastic tulle, more permeable to liquids, exaggerates this defect. It therefore becomes necessary, for the elastic tulle, to make as complete a correction as possible, and for this purpose, without seeking to eliminate the causes which produce the reinforcement of the color of the edges, by contenting itself with compensating for this. darker dyeing of the edges by increasing the color intensity of everything. the central part, for this. the latter is watered alone, with the dye bath itself, which is pumped into the bottom of the boat through wire netting. tration;
the liquid is sent by valves in sufficient number to nozzles, distributed along the axis and above each cylinder.
One can also seek to tackle the cause 'itself of the phenomenon by fitting on the cylinder, on each side of the wound fabric, adjustable cheeks. They will transform the cylinder into a kind of large coil and will eliminate the lateral contact of the mass of the tissue with the surrounding space, thus avoiding any circulation.

abnormal tion of liquid in the tissue by capillarity Or. well, a compression will be produced on the wafer intended to drive out the liquid which would tend to accumulate therein, by all appropriate methods allowing as regular compression as possible of this wafer and of the first centimeters of width of. tissue.
Figures 10 and 11 show an embodiment in which the compression of the fabric roll b1 is provided at the edges by applying a rubberized fabric c1 suitably stretched by weights q1.
It is also possible to apply a large surface to this section and obtain that it compresses the fabric as regularly as possible, for example by means of levers loaded with weight at their end and working side by side. . In either case, it will be necessary to obtain an action from the weights, the transverse component of which towards the center of the mass is sufficiently large.

seen well again will add to each roll of widening bar, and on each side of each of them, a small cylinder or scarf applied against it by all convebal means. The two side scarves thus produced will compress the two edges of the fabric over a large enough width to obtain the desired effect.
It is also possible to provide a single scarf extending over the entire width of the apparatus, and possibly arranged so as to produce greater compression on the edges of the fabric than in the central part. This scarf could be replaced by a rubber squeegee placed opposite each roll of the widening bar and removing by pressure (suitably adjusted along its length) the excess liquid contained in the fabric.

The on-board offense.
or selvedge described oi-deasua is complicated in stretch fabrics in width from a difference in dye, not regular, of the edges because during winding the width of the fabric does not remain constant, The inequalities thus produced may be more serious although the edge effect itself.
To remedy this, the intensity of action of the widening bars f1 f2 is varied by modifying their angular position. For this purpose, the end forming an axis of each bar such as ¯il can be controlled by a lever if provided with a stop handle s2; the lever s1 engages by its lower end in a hole of the widening bar and it is understood that by moving the lever one modifies the inclination of the bar and consequently the action of oelle-oi.
