<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Elle consiste, mise à part cette disposition principale, en certaines autres dispositions, qui s'utilisent de préférence en même temps et dont il sera plus explicitement parlé ci-après notamment: en une deuxième disposition, consistant à rendre la cuvette, comportant le déversoir rectiligne, indépendante des parties restantes de l'appareil de façon que sa position relative par rapport auxdites parties, puisse, être modifiée, par exemple en vue du réglage de l'horizontalité dudit déversoir, en une troisième disposition, consistant à isoler le déversoit rectiligne de la zone d'alimentation de la cuvette par un registre, dont la position est réglable en hauteur;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Improvements made to methods and devices for treating molten materials such as glass, metal, etc. in order to obtain parts of planar shape".
The invention relates to the treatment of molten materials, such as glass, metal, etc., with a view to obtaining parts of planar shape.
Its aim, above all, is to make these treatments such that they make it possible to obtain, in a simple and continuous manner, parts with a planar shape and whose thickness, of any desired value, is constant over the entire extent. of the room* .
It mainly consists in causing an excess of material to overflow over a rectilinear weir, made up of one of the walls of a basin, fed, in a continuous manner, with a quantity of molten material which cor- corresponds to the flow that we want to ensure at the weir.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It consists, apart from this main arrangement, of certain other arrangements, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below in particular: in a second arrangement, consisting in making the basin, comprising the weir rectilinear, independent of the remaining parts of the apparatus so that its relative position with respect to said parts, can be modified, for example with a view to adjusting the horizontality of said weir, in a third arrangement, consisting in isolating the rectilinear overflow the cuvette feed zone by a register, the height of which is adjustable;
in a fourth arrangement, consisting in making appear, in the chamber in which the bowl is established, thermal means suitable for giving to the materials contained in the latter, the desired state of plasticity; and in a fifth arrangement, consisting in receiving, transporting and, where appropriate, rolling the part of planar shape, obtained by the treatments of the type in question, at the outlet of the weir, by cylindrical rollers.
It relates more particularly to certain modes of application as well as certain embodiments of said provisions; and it relates more particularly still, and this by way of new industrial products, the installations for the implementation of the treatments comprising application of the said provisions, the special elements and apparatuses, specific to their establishment, as well as the parts, in glass, in metal or any other material, obtained using these treatments.
And it can, in any case, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
EMI2.1
The single figure included in this drawing, shows 9 [1

perspective view after a vertical median section, a device established in accordance with the invention.
According to the invention, and more especially according to that of its modes of application as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that there is reason to grant the preference, proposing to obtain, starting from A molten material, for example molten glass, sheets or plates, the procedure is as follows, or the like.
The apparatus is made to include a basin 1, intermediate or not, out of which the molten material flows in a continuous manner, through a passage 2, in a rectangular-shaped basin 3, the regular and constant flow of said basin being ensured by any suitable method, for example by a uniform supply by means of a register, by tilting the basin, by a mass which is lowered at the desired speed in the molten material. The bowl 3 is mounted on a frame 4 which is independent of the other parts of the apparatus so that its horizontal position can be easily adjusted by means of jacks 5 or the like.
The side wall of the bowl 3 is formed, parallel to the passage 2 and the furthest from the latter, in the form of a horizontal rectilinear weir 6 by inclining it outwards and giving it a height less than that of the other side walls of said bowl.
And said bowl 3 is established in a chamber 7, the side wall of which has, at the location where the weir 6 is located, an opening 8 through which the plastic material, after having overflowed over the weir, can flow out. continuously in the form of a regular sheet 9 and which gradually solidifies on contact with ambient air.
The web thus obtained can descend freely under the effect of its weight, if necessary with the intervention of stretching means or it can be received by rollers or horizon cylinders.

rate 10 in which the shafts 13 are driven in any suitable manner, which rollers or cylinders are used. hold, straighten, transport and, if necessary, laminate the sheet until it has sufficient rigidity to keep its final shape. The continuous strip thus obtained is then cut into sections of desired length by any suitable means.
By the flow rate of the molten materials, coming from the basin 1 and which flow through the passage 2 in the bowl 3, it is possible to regulate the excess of material contained in the said bowl and consequently the thickness of the sheet 9, said thickness being as high as desired and being regular over the entire extent of the room, thanks to the horizontality of the weir 6 which can be obtained in a very precise and easy manner, using the jacks.
The chamber 7, in which the feeding of the bowl 3 is made, is blocked from the outside by a register 12, the position of which is adjustable in height and the lower edge of which is located near the free surface of the material. - Re, contained in the basin, for example a little above said surface. On the other hand, the discharge orifice 8 above the weir 6 communicates freely with the outside. In the chamber 7 are advantageously housed heating elements, such as electrical resistors 3, thanks to which one can give to the material contained in said bowl, any desired degree of plasticity, suitable for the overflow and stretching of said material $ .
The temperature in this chamber 7 can moreover be regulated, by means of a pyrometric device, using an automatic regulator acting on the supply circuit of the resistors 13.
To promote cooling of the materials which overflow over the weir 6, the edge of the latter can be formed by a hollow part, for example made of a metal
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
with a high melting point such as a nickel-chromium alloy, in which a refrigerant fluid such as air or a cold liquid circulates. Likewise, the cylinders 10 can be cooled by circulating a cold fluid in the shafts 11 which, in this case, consist of tubular parts.
Eg proceeding in the manner indicated above, it is possible to obtain, in a simple and economical manner, plates, sheets or sheets, made of glass, metal or any other material which, in the molten state, presents sufficient plasticity or cohesion to allow stretching, the thickness of the flat pieces thus obtained being as small or as high as desired.
