<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The invention relates to electromechanical groups comprising a generator metadyne mechanically driven and in connection with an accumulator battery.
An advantageous application of the present invention can be made to a diesel-electric traction system in which the secondary circuit of a metadyne generator powers the traction motors; the load thereof varies appreciably and it is desirable for the diesel engine to run at approximately constant speed at the maximum permissible speed while providing the necessary peaks; The main object of the invention is to provide a device by which the engine provides approximate power.

constant while its speed is also kept constant within the interval of two / predetermined limits, an accumulator battery providing the necessary additional power during overloads and absorbing the excess power produced during periods of reduced load *
A transforming metadyne includes an armature similar to that of direct current dynamos! it is driven at constant speed and, in its simplest form, carries two pairs of brushes arranged at right angles - Current is supplied to one pair and produces a flux creating an electro-motive force between the brushes of the second pair of brushes between which the user circuit is connected.
The primary circuit being supplied by a source of currents at substantially constant voltage, a current of constant intensity flows through the user circuit. In a transforming metadyne, the motor and resistance couples are equal and opposed. In order, however, for the machine to function as a generator, the equality of these torques is broken by the addition of a field winding called "primary variator winding" arranged to produce a flux along the axis of the primary brushes. and marl sense that the flow created by the primary current. The effect of this winding is to reduce the importance of the primary current, which reduces the motor torque of the metadyne, the additional power being supplied by the shaft.
According to the invention, a motor drives a metadyne, the secondary of which supplies a variable load circuit, the terminals of a battery being connected to the primary brushes and a field winding being provided, producing a flux component in the axis of the primary flux , the excitation of this winding being adjusted so that the load on the motor is between two chosen limits. A regulating dynamo, coupled to the metadyne, is connected to the battery through the primary variator winding of the metadyne, arranged to produce the flux component in line with the primary brushes and the electromotive force of this dynamo is in opposition to that. drums.
Usually, with such an arrangement, a governor is not required on the engine.
Alternatively, the inverter winding can be connected to the terminals of the buffer battery or an additional battery! in this case, a regulator must be provided on the engine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It may also be advisable to use two variator windings, one energized by the regulating dynamo, the other by the current of a battery; such an arrangement also eliminates the need for a regulator.
The dull "axis of the primary brushes" used in the text means primary switching axis or axis of the flux produced by the primary current and the corresponding meaning is given to the expression "axis of the secondary brushes", The expression "axis of the brush "is used for convenience of diagrams *
Figure 1 gives the diagram of the electrical connections according to the invention, of a metadyne generator supplying three electric motors and Figure 2 is the representative graph of its operation *
FIG. 3 gives a modified form of the installation in which the motors are connected to the metadyne according to the so-called "in.
8 ".
Figure 4 shows a detailed arrangement to avoid overcharging the battery. Finally, in Figure 5 is shown a modification of the arrangement in Figure 1, in which the primary regulating winding, instead of being arranged in the axis of the primary brushes, is disposed obliquely with respect to this axis-
In FIG. 1, the primary brushes are at A and C and the secondary brushes at B and D. The secondary circuit supplies three motors M1, M2, M3.
The PVW primary variator winding produces an axis marl flow than that produced by the primary current but in the opposite direction, which has the effect of reducing the motor torque and causing the metadyne to operate as a generator * The accumulator battery SB is connected to the terminals of the primary brushes A and C: in parallel with it is the regulating dynamo R in series with a second primary variable winding called "regulating winding '. The regulating dyname R can be with shunt winding or separately excited hearth. , it is mechanically coupled to the metadyne and its electromotive force is in opposition to the voltage at the battery terminals.
The excitation of the regulator R is adjusted so that at the speed of the group, the electromotive force that it orées is $ equal and opposed to the voltage at the terminals of the battery and that no current crosses the 'PRW regulator winding. Under normal operating conditions
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Finally, the primary flux is produced by the primary variable speed drive winding PVW which flux is, in general, increased by the addition of a small current coming from the battery SB.
When the load on the motors drops, there is a correlative c @ ute with that of the diesel engine, the speed of which tends to increase * Under these conditions the electromotive force of the regulating dynamo R becomes greater than the voltage at the terminals of the battery SB which is charged by the dynamo *
As explained above, this charging current, by its action on the primary variator winding, has the effect of reducing the primary current of the metadyne and even of changing it direction, the metadyne charging. then the battery-
When there is no PVW inverter winding constantly excited, the excitation of the dynamo regulator must be adjusted so that at the chosen speed a current still flows through the PRW winding allowing the metadyne to operate in generator,
The arrangement described may be insufficient to strictly maintain the speed at the chosen value, but it is sufficient that the speed of the diesel engine is kept within acceptable limits.
A special case to consider is that in which the motors M are at rest, the brushes B and D then being practically short-circuited, which is the case when the locomotive is stationary! then the metadyne functions as a generator delivering current from the primary brushes to the BB battery, the excitation, in this case, is by the secondary current combined with the effect of the SVW inverter winding if used .
Regenerative braking can be done easily by the arrangement described. To this end, the current and the secondary flow must be maintained in the direction marl by reversing the connections to the armatures or to the inductors of the motors; the direction of the primary current is automatically reversed; this is necessary so that the secondary electromotive force of the generating metadyne opposes that created by the motors *
In FIG. 1, SVW is an additional winding to the stator, arranged in line with the axis of the secondary brushes and suitably excised; its role is to vary the importance of the secondary current and it has the effect of varying the ratio between the motor and resistor torques.

It should be noted that the regulating dynamo acts as a speed regulator and thus dispenses with the usual mechanical equipment. In the case of a train, the driver operates a controller having notches corresponding to various values of field and armature current, each notch being able, moreover, to correspond to a determined degree of fuel injection and to a given power.
The regulating dynamo acts to maintain the speed substantially equal to the speed chosen by adjusting the load of the diesel engine * This adjustment is carried out either by supplying the excess power to the battery, or by asking it for the necessary additional energy.
In engraving 8 which graphically shows the operation of the installation, the current and the power supplied (KW) are on the ordinate and the secondary voltage on the abscissa * The straight line ab represents the characteristic of the metadyne current corresponding to the positions of the controller stick! the ohdb parabola represents the power absorbed by the motors; XX 'being the constant power supplied by the diesel engine.
Taking the line XX 'as the x-axis, the ordinates of the parabola, in its part located below this line, represent the power supplied to the battery and, in its part above this line. the ordinates represent the power supplied by the battery; cb represents the characteristic of the metadyne for another position of the controller handle while the dish ogb corresponds to the corresponding power curve.
FIG. 3 shows an arrangement where two motors M1 and M2 are connected to the metadyne according to the so-called 8 connection, that is to say they are each connected to both a primary brush and a secondary brush, the arrangements of the regulating dynamo and the battery remain the same. The PVW primary drive winding is still shown powered by the primary circuit.
In order to allow the reduction or the stopping of the charge of the battery when its voltage reaches a given limit, a relay dependent on this voltage can be placed on the diesel engine to regulate the infection * such a return, as shown in figure. 4, consists of an electric motor T connected to the battery terminals through a resistance r limiting the current, the torque of the motor being proportional to the value of the voltage.
In some cases it is desirable, in order to obtain the results.
