<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Specification in support of the patent application for: "LOADING GAUGE FOR BOATS."
The subject of the present patent is a loading gauge for boats making it possible to easily carry out the gauging measurements of the edge of the boat.
For this purpose, the gauge envisaged consists essentially of a glass tube of suitable length terminating at its lower end immersed in water, by a tap whose opening and closing can be effected from the upper end of the valve. tube by an appropriate order. Given the length of the glass tube and in order to give the device the desired rigidity, the glass tube is housed in a grooved brass tube allowing the water column to be seen.
On the side of this tube is added a graduation and this tube is connected by spacers 4-two other parallel tubes forming with the tube containing the glass tube the three vertices of a triangle which allows to give the whole a great rigidity. One of the tubes contains a rod controlling the opening.

ture or close the valve. The upper part of this assembly is reinforced by a frame carrying a handle and laterally an angled piece coinciding with the zero of the graduation intended to be placed against the registration index of the boat. The lower part is similarly protected by a reinforcing frame.
In order to bring out the above statement better, the appended drawings represent:
Fig.I a front elevational view of the gauge considered in accordance with the object of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a view of the upper part and the lower part of the gauge on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 a sectional elevation along AB fig.3.
Fig. 4 a horizontal section according to CD fig.3.
Referring to the above figs, 1 represents the central tube provided with a groove 8 and in which is housed the glass tube 9 connected to a ring 11 integral with the tube 1 and on which is screwed the valve 12 of which the key is fixed to a small connecting rod 13 articulated with a rod 15 housed in the tube 2 and opening out at its upper part, forming an operating ring 16.
The tubes 1, 2 and 3 are joined together by spacers 4. On the tube 1, on one side of the groove 8 is fixed the gradient 10.
As can be seen the lower part of the gauge is provided with a protective frame 7 and the upper part has a frame 5 ending upwards with a maneuver handle 6. On the face of the frame 5 opposite the tube 1 is fixed by means of studsl8 and a wing nut .il engaged on a threaded rod 19 integral with a plate 20 engaged between the uprights forming the frame 5, an angled part 17 intended to make contact with the boat registration index.
The way to use it is as follows:
We take the device by the handle 6 and we make coincide
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the registration index of the boat with the branch of the bracket 17 and by means of the finger we pull on the ring 16 which has the effect of opening the tap 12 which allows the water to rise in the glass tube 9. After a few moments, the ring 16 is released, which has the effect of closing the tap 12. The water thus remains trapped in the glass tube 9. The apparatus is then removed. and by placing it vertically in front of you, the height of the water column is measured on the graduation 10. The zego of the graduation 10 coincides with the registration index of the boat, the reading is very easy.
Once the measurement has been made, the ring 16 is pulled again to allow the water to flow out, and thus the apparatus is ready for a new gauging operation.
It should be noted that the drawings represent by way of example an embodiment of the apparatus, and that, as can easily be seen, the apparatus can be constructed in any suitable size and include methods or variants of execution. .
As already indicated, you can use the device from the edge of the boat.
The presence of waves has no influence on the accuracy of the measurement. The device can be used in the dark, since it is sufficient to have an electric flashlight to read the height of the water column.
