<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PATENT OF INVENTION PROCESS OF DEPURATION: AND REGENERATION OF HYDROCARBONS, ANIMAL AND VEGETABLE OILS, RESINS, WAXES, ETC.
The invention relates to a process for the purification and regeneration of hydrocarbons such as gasoline, heavy oils, ceresin, paraffin, benzol, tars and oils of tar, lignite and coal. , as well as shale oils, animal and vegetable oils and fats including stearin, and also resins and waxes, including mountain wax., resin oils, resinous bitumens, spirits of turpentine and; pine oils. This process can be used as a refining method in the manufacture of these materials and especially also for their regeneration, when they have already been used for their intended purpose.
In particular, it is applicable to the regeneration of used lubricating oils, which are transformed again into complete lubricants, in a simple and economical manner, by means of the process according to the invention. In addition, this process can also be used, for example, to regenerate frying and roasting oils or fats :, as well as compositions based on

of area like those used to record them-

phcnoraphic7ues elements.
When it is used for regeneration, for example for the regeneration of used lubricating oils, the process according to the invention consists of mixing the oil to be purified, in a suitable vessel, with small amounts of oil. a solid hyposulfite, followed by stirring, with concentrated sulfuric acid. The whole is left to stand and at the end of some time a dark hoe is deposited at the bottom of the vessel, from which one separates, preferably by decantation, the oil which is on top and which has a smell of sulphurous acid.
This oil is then diluted with alkalis, for example sodium hydroxide solution, or alkaline salts, such as calcined saturated carbonate, potassium carbonate, borax, chalk, if necessary by adding small quantities of oxygen-giving salts, such as sodium dichromate or permanganate, until completely neutralized.
It is left to stand and, after some time, the purified oil, which has become again clear and limpid in color, separates in the upper part and in most cases this oil does not need any additional treatment in order to be able to be used further. new as complete lubricating oil.
When the process in question is applied in the refining operation itself, during the manufacture of the named materials, the same measures are generally taken as. for the application of the process to the purification of dirty lubricating oils. In some cases, however, it may be necessary to adapt these measures to the particular material to be treated and the goal to be achieved. It may be useful, for example to treat the mineral oils to be refined, before the treatment with hyposulphite and sulfuric acid, with an alkali

or alkaline solutions, to first remove naphthéinic acids or other similar substances.
In some cases, more particularly for very thick oils, it has been found advantageous to add to these additionally. hyposulfite, small amounts of a salt of an organic acid, for example formate or. acetate- sadist .. temple ..
1000 kilos of lubricating oil. The salt are added in an open container with 4 kilograms of crushed crystallized sodium hyposulfite, and added slowly with stirring 20 kilograms of concentrated sulfuric aid. After leaving to stand for several hours, the oil is separated from the sludge which has settled to the bottom and stirred with 10 kg. of sodium lye and 5 kg of soda or calcined potash, and after clarification the oil thus purified: can be used again.
