<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Improvements to metallic pipe couplings".
The invention relates to metal pipe couplings for steam heating pipes mainly used in railway vehicles. Its main object is a coupling of this kind composed entirely of metal and which is considerably lighter and more economical to manufacture than the couplings presently recommended. In particular, the invention comprises the ball joint device of extremely simple construction, capable of long service and very efficient operation.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a portion of a coupling pipe constructed in accordance with an embodiment.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
embodiment of the invention and Figure 2 is a plan view of the upper part of the coupling of Figure
1. Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 show in section various embodiments of the ball joint used for the coupling of the invention.
In FIG. 1 it can be seen that the half-coupling comprises a pipe portion 1 provided at its lower part with a coupling head 2 and connected at its part opposite to a pipe portion 3 by a connector 4 with seal with rotule. The upper end of the pipe portion 3 has a fitting with a ball joint 5 for connecting the pipe 3 to the isolation valve of the steam heating pipe of a vehicle.
Sections 2 and 3 are preferably made of steel tubes and are covered with a casing 6 of heat-insulating material.
Fittings with ball joints are constructed as shown on a larger scale in Figures 3, 4, 5 or 6.
Referring to the embodiment shown in Figure 3, it can be seen that the ball joint comprises a cap 7 preferably made of cast aluminum alloy and a ball 8 made of cast aluminum alloy and a ball 8 made of cast aluminum alloy. alloy of the same pomposition. The cap has an externally threaded tubing 9 for connection to the isolation valve or this tubing serves to connect the ball joint to the upper end of the pipe section 1 as shown in figure 1.
The ball 8 is cast on the end of the pipe
3 provided with annular corrugations 10 to ensure full solidarity between the ball 8 and the pipe 3 and the ball 8 comprises a ring 11 which encircles the pipe 3.
The cap 7 is provided with a rim 12 comprising on the inside an annular cavity 13 with a wedge-shaped section - and on the outside an annular groove 14.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A relatively thin rigid casing 15, preferably of hard bronze, covers the spherical surface of the ball 8 to which it is attached during the melting of the latter. The outer surface of the casing 15 is engaged in an annular bearing part 16 preferably made of Monel metal or stainless steel and the part 16 is held in the cavity 13 by a ring 17 which traps the rim 18 of the part 16. Ring 17 is made of cast metal or an alloy which is cast in place in cavity 13 after inserting part 16.
The part 16 must be sufficiently elastic to seal on the surface of the casing 15 and to prevent fluid leakage at the location of the seal.
In the embodiment of FIG. 4, the support piece 16 is of less elastic material, but its lower edge is thin enough to be able to undergo a slight deformation and to form an effective seal.
In the embodiment of FIG. 5, the support piece 16 is made of a non-elastic metal or alloy, but slightly plastic and capable of withstanding wear, for example gray cast iron.
In the embodiment of FIG. 6, the envelope 15 is elastic and it is preferably made of a metal sheet shaped on the ball joint by means of a push-in lathe and the turned edges of the envelope are encrusted in the metal of the ball joint 8. In this case the latter is made of a metal or an alloy which contracts considerably on cooling so as to leave a very small gap between the outer surface of the ball joint 8 and the internal surface of the casing 15. The latter is also made susceptible to a slight deformation as a result of its elasticity and it can match the shape of the support 16 by making a seal on it; support 16 is similar to that
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
described with reference to figure 3.
When it is desired to replace or renew the support 16, the ring 17 is removed, for example in a turn by means of a suitable tool and after insertion of a new support, a new fixing ring is cast in place in the cap 7.
The crown 11 of the ball 8 has been designed to serve as a stop to limit the angular displacement of the ball relative to its cap, the crown 11 of the ball 8 bears against the edge 12 of the cap when these two elements take the extreme inclination which is allowed them.
A ring 19 is engaged in a groove 14 of the rim 12 in order to protect the cap against blows or shocks.
As can be seen in figure 2, the ring 19 can be turned so as to form an eye or a loop in which the hook of a chain can be engaged in order to suspend the coupling hose from the. vehicle chassis.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described and modifications can be made to it as required by particular circumstances of application.
