<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
cycle à moteur.
La figure 1 est une vue en élévation, en bout avec coupe partielle, d'un dispositif établi conformément à l'invention;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Automatic engine starting device"
The present invention relates to an automatic engine starting device; she . is particularly applicable to the automatic starting of the motors of motor cycles, although it can be applied in other analogous cases, for example to motor cars provided with freewheels.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In a motor cycle such as those used at the present time, when we want to start the motor, we pedal to turn the rear wheel which drives the motor by belt or chain; it then starts up. But it will be understood that this action of pedaling to drive the motor requires, on the part of the user, a fairly significant effort, since it is necessary to drive the total weight of the machine and at the same time overcome the resistance required. 'offers the motor; to reduce this resistance, it is customary to remove the compression by pressing the decompressor; it remains nonetheless true that the total resistance to be overcome in order to move the machine forward and to drive the motor is still very great and can often exceed the limit of the force that certain users can provide.
On the other hand, when you want to drive the moped by hand, for one reason or another, you will always encounter this fairly high resistance.
The device which forms the subject of the invention makes it possible to remedy these drawbacks and consequently to give motor cycles the same driving facilities as the bicycles themselves, this device also enabling the motor cycles to be driven. the user to start and stop his engine whenever and as often as he wishes.
The automatic starting device is essentially characterized by the combination, on the crankshaft of the engine, of a freewheel mechanism and a suitable clutch device.
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, diagrammatically and by way of example only, an embodiment of the invention applied to the engine of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
motor cycle.
Figure 1 is an end elevational view partially in section of a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a section through II-II of Figure 1.
As can be seen in the drawing, on the end 1 of the crankshaft of the engine 2 is fixed in any suitable manner (for example by means of two flats 3 of the shaft 1) the hub 4 a free wheel 5, the outer ring gear 6 of which is integral with a clutch plate 7 and the control pinion 8 connected (by chain for example) to the rear wheel of the cycle; the aforementioned hub 4 of the freewheel can be held by a nut 9 which screws onto a threaded part 10 of the shaft 1 and which prevents any longitudinal movement of the hub 4; this nut 9 simultaneously maintains the central ring of the stuffing box 11 and the ball bearing 12 of the crankshaft 1.
On the same shaft 1 is mounted (for example on a square part 13 of the shaft 1) a second clutch plate 14 carrying a suitable lining 15; plate 14, which can move along shaft 1, constantly tends to be pushed out of contact with plate 7, thanks to the action of a spring 16; plate 14 may have a projecting part 17 for housing the spring. Against the outer surface of the plate 14 carry rollers 18 mounted in a part 19 which can oscillate about a fixed axis 20. The upper part of the part 19 is connected, in any suitable manner, to an operating member (for example to a Bowden cable 21) which makes it possible to oscillate, by hand, the part 19 to bring the plate 14 into engagement with the plate 7.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The entire device is enclosed in a housing 22 bolted at 23 to the housing 24 of the engine. The housing 22 has an opening 25 allowing the oscillation of the part 19 which passes through it and it carries, preferably, a ball bearing 26 for the end of the shaft 1, which bearing serves at the same time as a stop for the plate. 14.
We see that to start the motor, it will suffice to pedal, as with an ordinary bicycle and without more effort (since we do not drive the motor, the freewheel mechanism 5 working in freewheel). and, when the machine has taken sufficient live force, it will suffice to press the lever which controls the Bowden cable 21 (which will engage the two plates 14 and 7 and which will cause the crankshaft to rotate. 1 on which is mounted the plate 14) to use this live force for starting the engine. When the speed of rotation of the motor has exceeded the speed of rotation of pinion 8 and consequently of the outer ring gear 6 of the freewheel, the lever which controls cable 21 can be released; the motor will drive the control gear 8 via the freewheel mechanism 5.
Likewise, when going down a hill, the engine can be idled and even stopped completely, in order to save fuel. Before the end of the descent, the main force of the machine will be used to restart the engine automatically; all you need to do is act on the lever which controls the Bowden 21 cable.
We will also notice that if, for one reason or another, we have to drive by hand
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the motor cycle, we will do it without more difficulty and without more effort than for an ordinary bicycle, since, thanks to the presence of the freewheel 5, we will not drive the motor which we will not have to overcome resistance.
Finally, in a dangerous descent, bringing the two plates 7 and 14 into contact may constitute an engine brake which will cancel the effect of the freewheel.
We can therefore see all the driving facilities offered by a motor cycle provided with the device which is the subject of the invention.
It is obvious that the device described and represented has been given only by way of example and that many modifications could be made to it without the general economy of the invention being thereby impaired; it is thus, for example, that the plate clutch mechanism which has been mentioned could be replaced by any other clutch device: cone clutch, disc clutch, claw clutch, etc ...; it is thus also that the control device of the part 19, instead of being constituted by the Bowden cable 21, could be constituted by any other suitable member.
Finally, it is obvious that although the invention has been described in an application to an engine cycle, it could be applied in any other similar case for the automatic starting of an engine by the live force acquired by the machine that can be controlled by said motor; For example, the invention could very well find its application in motor cars with free wheels.
