<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
La paroi ou fond 16 comporte un rebord 17 dirigé vers l'extérieur oonstituant la paroi latérale du oar- ter et servant à la fixation du oouverole 15 ,par exauce au moyen de vis 18 vissées dans des bossages appropriés ou bien de toute autre manière convenable. Le fond est également pourvu d'un rebord annulaire 19 qui est dirigé vers l'inté- rieur et qui entoure l'aooouplement.Des cliquets 21 sont arti- oulés en des points diamétralement opposés du rebord 19(fig.3) sur des axes 20 vissés dans des bossages 19a;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
samment diminué pour que la force centrifuge développée dans cet élément soit vaénoue par le couple de torsion de l'ar- bre 1 auquel l'élément A est encore directement accouplé;

<Desc/Clms Page number 18>

"Improvements in speed change mechanisms
EMI1.1
au.1: .amatic and synohronized ".
The present invention relates to an automatic gear change mechanism which is arranged between two shafts and which enables the rotation of the motor shaft to be transmitted to the driven shaft either by means of a gear tmin (reduction speed of the controlled shaft in relation to that of the motor shaft) or directly, the passage from one of the speed stages to the other taking place automatically and smoothly. Such a speed change can be used in general to transmit to different shafts the driving forces coming from a source which conquered it is more particularly suitable for motor vehicles, for example light vehicles such as motorcycles.
The main subject of the invention is an automatic and synchronized gear change mechanism, comprising a planetary gear train arranged between the motor shaft and the drive shaft so as to reduce the speed of this gear.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
last, the planet wheels of this mechanism rotating on axes integral with a housing or a cover which can itself turn on the drive shafts or controlled Desroches prevent this oarter of this cover from rotating until it was caused a change of speed of the two shafts forcing them to turn in synchronism. As long as the oarter is blocked, the transmission of the movement of the motor mechanisms takes place via the gears and,
when the motor shaft and the controlled shaft rotate in synchronism under the influence of variations in the speed of the gears, this transmission is effected by direct coupling; in this case, the oarter is then pulled by the planet wheels in the same direction of rotation as the main shafts and the mechanism and the motor shaft rotate together around a common axis.
The subject of the invention is also a device for immobilizing the planet wheels in the last case mentioned above, as well as particularly advantageous embodiments of the device for locking the oarter.
The invention further provides that one can use two coupling mechanisms connected to each other to transmit the driving force between the motor shaft and the driven shaft so as to obtain a greater number. of stages of speed.
In an alternative embodiment, the planet wheels can turn on shafts integral with a part which is rigidly connected to the drive shaft and the drive pinion of the mechanism can turn on this shaft, the locking and the locking. braking taking place on this pinion and no longer on the casing-Finally, the planetary gear train is preferably connected to the motor shaft so as to be able to be made independent of it, which makes it possible to establish and eliminate. connection with the energy source or to obtain a more comfortable starting of the engine.

The description which will follow, with reference to the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented.
FIG. 1 is a section through 1-1 of FIG. 2, showing an embodiment of the gear change mechanism which is the subject of the invention.
. Fig. 2 is a transverse view of the gear change and coupling mechanisms mounted on a motor vehicle, between the engine and the controlled shaft.
Fig. 3 is a section through III-III of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section IV-IV of FIG. 2.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of two combined speed change mechanisms, substantially analogous to that of FIG. 1 (although without coupling).
Fig. 6 is a section through VI-VI of FIG. 5.
Figs. 7 and 8 show an alternative embodiment, FIG. 7 being a transverse oup and FIG. 8 a cup by VIII-VIII of fig 7.
In the various figures, the same reference numbers have been used to designate the same organs, or equivalent organs.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 1-4 the planetary gear train is established in the form of a two-stage gear change mechanism with a disengaging device; this gear train comprises a motor pinion or central planetary wheel 2, the hub 3 of which rotates on the hub 4 of a plate 5 which forms part of the disengagement or coupling mechanism and which is deorit later, the hub 4 being olaveté or fixed in any other way on the drive shaft 1, and a stop éorou 6 retaining all oes members in their respective positions.
The receiving planetary wheel 7 is of larger diameter than the wheel 2 and, by means of its hub 8, it can turn on a man-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ohon 9 mounted at the end of the shaft 1, the end of which the diameter is smaller than that of the shaft. The hub 8 may be integral with the receiver shaft, or be brought on oelui-oi; it may include for example a chain wheel
8a ensuring the connection with the re-picking shaft by means of a chain or any other means of transmission. If the motor shaft and the receiver shaft are oo-axial, the transmission can take place, for example, by means of a coupling flange or the like.
The gear train further comprises two pairs of planet wheels each constituted by the wheels 10 and 11 (a greater number of such pairs can be used) meshing with the planetary wheels 2 and 7; the wheels 10 have a larger diameter than the wheels 11 and these wheels are connected to each other by means of one or more bolts 12 which further connect them to an exentric 13 arranged between them and oonstituted by a number of stacked discs. Each group of satellite wheels, which is composed in this way, rotates around at the end of an axle 14 which is permanently mounted between the anterior and posterior walls 15 and 16 of the casing protecting the gears.
The wall or bottom 16 has a flange 17 directed outwards constituting the side wall of the oarter and serving for fixing the cover 15, by means of screws 18 screwed into suitable bosses or else in any other suitable manner. . The bottom is also provided with an annular rim 19 which is directed inwardly and which surrounds the co-coupling. Pawls 21 are articulated at diametrically opposed points of the rim 19 (fig. 3) on axes 20 screwed into bosses 19a;
these oliquets are preferably ohaigets by a weight at their ends and each of them is biased by a relatively weak spring 22 which pushes it back into one of the teeth 23 of a ratchet wheel 25 positioned on the motor frame or on the oarter 24
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the crankshaft. The oliquets thus prevent the gear train oarter from turning counterclockwise but allow it to turn in the opposite direction. During the rotation of the oarter in the direction of clockwise, the centrifugal force moves the pawls 21 away from the roohet wheel and forces them to rest progressively, against the action of the spring 22, on the housing wall.
The number of oliquets is variable. A cover plate 26 is screwed onto the rim 19 which is disposed between the rim and the roohet wheel.
The housing rotates on bearings 27 arranged respectively on the hub of the wheel 7 and on the flange 28 of the drive plate 29 of the coupling. The rim 28 is provided with teeth or projections 30 which penetrate into the recesses 31 of the wheel 2, so that the disc 29 is effectively connected to this wheel 2.
The eccentrics 13 play the role of masses subjected to the influence of centrifugal force as will be explained below. The eccentrics can be an integral part of the wheels which are fixed on the same hub. In this case, it is still possible to dispense with the eccentrics and to leave holes in the hub, the planet wheels then acting directly as masses subjected to the action of centrifugal force.
The plate 5 which was mentioned previously and which forms part of the coupling, has a guide rim 32 directed towards the rear as shown in FIG. 4; this rim is provided at its periphery with a number of radial projections 33 and 34 (six in the example shown) arranged symmetrically and having alternately slightly different shapes. On this rim is applied a coaxial disc 35 which is blocked, against any axial outward displacement, by the notched edges 36 of the projections 33-34.
In ohaoune of the projections 33 is mounted a rocking lever
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
two arms 38 which pivot on an axis 37 and which, when viewed from the motor shaft, abuts at its outer end against a second coupling disc 39 capable of moving on the rear edge of the plate 5. Between the discs 35 and 39 is mounted loose a drive plate 40 provided, at its periphery, with projections 41 which penetrate into the recesses of the ratchet wheel 42 of the disc 29; the outer part of the disc 40 is furthermore provided with a covering of cork or other material having a high coefficient of friction.
On the other three radial extensions 34 is held, by means of bolts 43 (fig. 4) an elastic and split disc 44 which rests, by its outer part, against the coupling disc 39.
The inner end of each of the rocker levers
38 enters a recess 45 of a ring 46 by which they can be controlled, this ring 46 rotating via an anti-friction thrust bearing in a second ring 48 which cannot rotate but can slide on a bearing 47 integral with the crankshaft casing; gue 48 has an inner rim 48a allowing it to drag ring 46 and has inclined ramps 49 on its inner edge. This ring 48 can be moved along its axis by means of an annular disc 51 which, oumn shows it partioulément in FIG. 3, has a limited angular displacement on the crankshaft oarter, and which is intended to control the coupling, this disc having inclined ramps 50 on the outside.
The annular disc 51 also has arms 52 which pass through recesses 53 of the locking disc or roohet wheel 25, these recesses allowing the disc 51 to perform the angular displacement necessary for controlling the ring 48. One of the recesses arm 52 is subjected to the action of a spring and includes the fixing device
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
54 of a control cable 55, a Bowden cable for example or any other similar device.
If the control disc 51 is in the position shown in fig. 1, i.e. if it does not move the ring 48 and if the coupling disc 39 under the action of the elastic disc 44 rubs against the drive plate 40 which, in turn, is found pressed against the disc 35, the coupling takes place between the motor shaft 1 and the receiving shaft through the hub 8 of the planet wheel 2, the disc 29, the drive plate 40, of the coupling plate 35 and of the control plate 5.
When the motor must be disengaged, move the control disc 51 in the direction of) clockwise, so that the inclined ramps of this disc push back the ring 48 and, consequently, the ring 46 along the axis and outwardly, by an amount corresponding to the length of the guide surface; This movement causes the tilting of the lever 38 which, by its outer end, lifts the disc 39 and disengages it from the drive plate 40 which thus, during the rotation of the planetary wheel 2, participates alone in the movement.
The coupling device described above was chosen only as an example and can be modified as needed.
This motion transmission mechanism works as follows: After starting the engine and when the coupling has been engaged, the! the shaft 1 rotates clockwise and the shafts 14 of the planetary wheels tend to move the oarter of the mechanism in the opposite direction to that which is allowed by the olives 21 which are in engagement with the wheel at roohets 25, 0 test- ie counterclockwise (fig. 2).
With the oarter now kept fixed, the movement of
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the abbreviated motor is transmitted to the hub 8 (and to the reoeper shaft) by the planetary wheel couplings. Due to the transmission ratios of the planetary gear train the hub 8 will acquire, in this case, a lower speed, that is to say will turn less quickly than the shaft 1; in other words, a reduction in the speed of the reactor shaft relative to the motor shaft is obtained.
During this period, the motor speed increases to a determined value. The direct coupling between the motor shaft and the re-switch shaft can then be caused either by the fact that the speed of the re-switch shaft increases with respect to that of the motor shaft in the ratio determined by the reduction of speed, for example in the case of a descent or by the fact that the speed of the motor shaft decreases in relation to that of the re-switch shaft as a result of braking or the momentary reduction of the intake throttle to the engine or from the clutch.
If we find ourselves in the last mentioned case the wheel 10 of each pair will also turn at a lower speed due to the speed reduction. But the speed of the receiving aiber being assumed to be constant, the oarter will be driven as a result of the movement communicated by the wheel 7 by the shafts of the planet wheels in the same direction as the motor shaft, the wheels 10, 11, that is. that is, the planetary wheel oouples starting to roll around the center of the coupling to compensate for the reduction in speed.
This movement of the housing in the direction of the needles of a meter is not prevented by the pawls 21 which pivot and fade outwards and this movement takes place at an increasing speed up to what the oarter turns in synchronism
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
with the motor shaft and consequently with the receiving shaft.
During this time, the speed of rotation of the satellite wheels around their own shafts decreases more and more, finally canceling out in the position mentioned last. In this position the planet wheels aooou- ple directly the driving and receiving shafts and then the eccentric masses of the planet wheels are urged outwards and a considerable centrifugal force develops due to the speed of rotation of the whole system, which thus turns like a block. Of course, there can be small, momentary oscillating movements of the planetary wheels around their shafts.
If it is now assumed that the intake of gases to the engine is not changed or that it increases and if it is also assumed that the engine is engaged, this engine then drives the vehicle in direct drive. For the above condition to be fulfilled, the centrifugal force must be large enough to overcome the torque to which the planetary wheels are subjected by the abremotor. In other words, the masses subjected to the action of the centrifugal force must be such that at the speed considered they develop a centrifugal force equal to or greater than the torsional torque.
As indicated, the change to direct coupling takes place in the same way if the speed of the sensor shaft and consequently that of the hub 8 increases with respect to the speed of the shaft. 1. The increase in speed which the hub 8 tends, in this case, to impart to the satellite wheel 11, but which the wheel 10 cannot transmit to the wheel 2 and to the shaft 1, thus causes in other words, a compensation movement of the planet wheels. As previously indicated, these wheels are forced to roll around the cnetred of the coupling, causing
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
oarter with them. The movement is for the rest seemed to that explained above.
If during operation in direct drive the motor is subjected to an overload, or if the receiver shaft and the hub 8 start to rotate at a lower speed, the. resistance of these components increases and the engine speed decreases.
When the speed of rotation of these components has become low enough so that the torque which gives rise to the centrifugal force becomes less than the torque exerted by the motor shaft, the planet wheels do not turn. or, in other words, they can no longer stay fixed on their trees. As a result, the engine is no longer overloaded and its speed is accelerated, at the same time as the speed of the oarter decreases to be finally canceled when the engine has reached the correct speed corresponding to operation at reduced speed; the casing is then blocked by the pawls 21 which are pushed inward and engage with the roahe ts wheel 25, so as to prevent the casing from rotating counterclockwise to a master.
The change from direct drive to movement at reduced speed, the drive taking place through the intermediary of a planetary gear, cannot therefore take place in a completely synchronous manner if it is not not made use of couplings.
If we consider in general the transmission mechanism which is the subject of the invention and which is arranged between a drive shaft and a drive shaft, we see that the change from reduced speed to walking in direct drive is obtained by the fact that, for constant variations in the transmission ratio, a correspondence is established between the speeds of the two
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
shafts and this oorrespondanoe can be obtained either by communicating a lower speed to the motor shaft, or by communicating a higher speed to the receiver shaft.
Conversely, the change from direct drive to reduced speed is obtained by increasing the resistance and decreasing the speed of the receiver shaft or by increasing the speed of the motor shaft until l 'the desired ratio has been obtained between the speeds of these shafts.
All passage movements are fcnt automatically and smoothly.
The application of the coupling is advantageously suitable, for example, in the case where this transmission mechanism is arranged on a light motorcycle in which the driving force is transmitted to the pinion shaft. The inverter operates the coupling by means of the control cable 55, so that the motor acre is disengaged from the planetary gear mechanism.
If now the rider gets on the motorcycle and starts it by pushing it, the controlled wheel7 of the gear train is rotated and the whole crankcase as well as the parts of the coupling which are connected to the pinion 2 are forced. to participate in this movement since the inertia of the mass is futile. When the motorcycle and the mechanism oarter have reached the desired speed and the motor shaft has been increased, braking occurs in the speed of pinion 2 and at the same time the reaction force accelerates the movement of the oarter in clockwise, until it reaches a speed the ratio of which to the speed of the pinion 7 is determined by the transmission ratio of the mechanism.
Obviously the acceleration power is equal to the starting resistance of the engine and is maximum during the first revolution of the engine. After starting, the engine speed increases and the oarter speed decreases; these variations continue until the crankcase, the shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
motor and wheel 7 reach the same speed and we are then in direct drive. If, as has been pointed out previously, the centrifugal force developed by the masses of the satellites is equal to or greater than the torque transmitted by the motor to the satellite wheel, the transmission continues to take place in direct drive. Otherwise, the engine speed continues to increase at the same time as the crankcase speed decreases until it becomes zero.
The tendency of the oarter to turn clockwise faster is impeded by the oliquets 21 and the motor drives the vehicle with speed reduction as explained above.
If, while driving, you wish to switch from driving in dictated gear to driving at reduced speed regardless of automatic operation, the motor shaft is momentarily disengaged; the momentum due to the increase in speed is reduced. then add to the torque of the motor, so that the centrifugal drill developed by the rotating mass is vain.
It should be noted when the oyole is arranged so that it can be brought to market by pushing it forward, that the axial forces which command the coupling, for example before starting, have their points of application exclusively on fixed parts, so that the lowest possible friction resistance is obtained.
Figs. 5 and 6 show the application of the invention to a device not using a coupling and comprising two transmission elements A and B which are both substantially of the same construction as that of FIGS. 1 and 2; these elements work in series or, in other words, form a three-stage transmission.
In the example of the drawing, each mechanism comprises four pairs of satellite wheels, the eccentric 13a of element A is, as seen in
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
greater than the eccentric 13b of element B; the masses subjected to the action of the centrifugal force are arranged in such a way that for a determined speed the ratio between the centrifugal forces exerted on these masses and the torsional torques transmitted by the motor shaft to the satel- lated wheels lites, is greater in element A than in element B.
If other mechanisms are used, for example if one is placed outside the element B, the subjected masses, the action of the centrifugal force in this element are established in such a way that for a determined speed the ratio between the centrifugal force and the torque is smaller than the ratio corresponding to the element B and so on.
The wheel 2 of element A is fixed on amber 1 by an oroisillon, while the wheel 7 of this element is keyed, by its hub 56 which penetrates into element B, on the similar hub 57 of the planetary wheel 2 of this element B, the hub which itself turns on the shaft 1. The oarters of the elements are substantially of the same construction and can rotate independently of each other on bearings of the shaft 1 and hubs 57 and 8.
In this version, two stages of speed reduction are thus obtained, one with a lower transmission ratio and the other with a higher transmission ratio.
The relative dimensions of the two planetary wheels 2, 7 and of the two planet wheels 10, 11 can vary from one element to another, so that different transmission ratios can be obtained in these elements.
Each housing has a braking device which, in the drawing, is assumed to be in the form of a brake shoe or shoe 81 which is movable on a fixed base and which can be held against the oarter against the effect of. 'a spring 82 by means of a suitable control device, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
cable 83, for example. A common braking device can be used for both cartels. The brakes can be made of any suitable mmière, for example by split, extensible rings which are applied against the periphery of the oarter.
The pawls serving to prevent the rotational movement of the oarter in the anti-clockwise direction, are formed in this case by members 58 which can be pushed against the outer surface of the housing by a spring 59 and which are articulated on a fixed stop, these members being controlled remotely by means of an operating cable 61, a wire, or a device of the same kind, a Bowden cable for example, this cable being fixed to an arm 60.
The oliquets of the different oarters can also be established as in the example of figs 1-4; they are controlled by hand independently of one another so as to obtain the locking and release and one can use to control them as well as to operate the brake (s), the same crgane
The transmission mechanism shown in fig. 5 and 6 operates substantially in the same way as that which is the subject of FIGS. 1-4 stage which is provided with a coupling.
If the shaft 1 is started in the direction of clockwise, that is to say in the direction in which the oarters of the mechanism are immobilized by the pawls 58, the pairs of planet wheels different elements are successively driven in rotation, the movement of the shaft being transmitted to the wheel 7 of the element B and consequently, by the chain wheel 8a, to the feedback shaft. Due to the transmission ratios the wheel 7 of the element B will thus reach a much lower speed than the shaft 1.
In the event that, for whatever reasons, for example following a closure of the gas inlet at the
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
tor, the -speed of shaft 1 decreases with respect to that of hub 8, the speed of this hub being assumed to be constant, the pairs of planet wheels 10 and 11 of element A, as has been shown in the preceding example, and when the wheels 2 and 7 have successively hitched the same speed, leading them to the oarter of the element A, under the action of the centrifugal fo rae acting on the eccentric masses.
In this last element the direct coupling is thus obtained, while in element B the sun gear 2 rotates at the same speed as the corresponding wheel of element A, the transmission being effected at reduced speed by the 'intermediate gears.
If the speed of shaft 1 does not decrease further, these ratios are maintained in the elements, because the action of centrifugal force is greater in element A than in element B, the centrifugal force in the latter being at the speed considered, still less than the torque transmitted by the shaft] To the planet wheels. However; or if the speed of the shaft 1 continues to decrease @ is subsequently reduced, so that finally the pinion 2 of the element B has the same speed as the wheel 7 of the same element, the planetary wheels in this element will thus gradually stop and drag the casing of this element with them.
The motor shaft and the receiver shaft are then clearly coupled. The operation will be the same if the speed of the arrester, for the same or for a different reason, gradually increases relative to that of the motor shaft. If during the direct drive motor transmission the motor is overloaded and therefore the resistance of the receiving shaft increases, the change to gearing occurs as it was observed with regard to the mechanism of figs. 1-4, first in element B, as soon as the speed of shaft 1 is sufficient
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
sufficiently reduced so that the centrifugal force developed in this element is attenuated by the torque of the shaft 1 to which the element A is still directly coupled;
this direct coupling remains until the speed of the shaft 1 has again decreased by an amount such that in the element A the centrifugal force cannot hold the planet wheels any longer and then the reduction in speed has place and the motor speed increases up to a determined value. The passage from one stage to another therefore occurs automatically and smoothly.
By means of the brake (s) it is possible, if necessary, to prevent one of the housings or both from rotating if desired, for example by braking the engine; the brake can thus, among other things, be used for the same purpose as the coupling to cause the change from direct drive to reduced speed.
Using yet another transmission mechanism results in a four-stage gear change which operates in a similar fashion.
In this case, it is also possible to establish a coupling similar to that which has been described previously or of another type; by means of this coupling the entire transmission mechanism can be disengaged from the motor shaft.
Figures 7 and 8 show an alternative embodiment of the two-stage transmission, this transmission being able to be placed on a motor vehicle; the sun gear 2 can rotate on the shaft 1 by means of roller bearings 62 or other members, while the shafts 14 of the planetary wheels are mounted in a part 63 which is powered on the shaft 1.
A disc 64 is screwed or fixed in any other way on the hub of the shaft 1 which extends outside the oarter of the mechanism, this disc being held in position by a locking element 65 and comprising at its periphery. ie on the outside a ledge 66 which projects towards the
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
terior and on the outer side of which acts a brake shoe 67 or a similar member produced in the example of FIGS. 5 and 6; o against the inner face of the flange 66 is applied a roller 68 of a roller roohet system 69 of oonnue oonstruotion, disposed on the oarter of the engine; this roller 68 prevents the rotation of the planetary wheel 2 in the direction of the needles of a meter.
The planetary wheel 7 rotates, by means of roller bearings 70, on the central part of the part 63 which is jogged on the shaft. Between the hub 8 of the wheel 7 and the outer end of the shaft 1, the end of which the diameter is reduced, is arranged an anti-friction thrust bearing 71 which is held in position by means of a ring d. stop 72 screwed onto the end of the shaft and retained by means of a lug 73 and a ring 74 screwed inside the hub. On the outside of the hub 8 is a cap or sleeve 75 screwed onto this hub and bearing a freewheel 76 pomrvue with chain wheel teeth 8a.
A cover 15 is screwed onto the bottom 16 of the transmission mechanism casing and the parts have on their inner periphery etanoheity gaskets 77 in contact with the corresponding planetary wheel; the housing is driven in rotation by the part 63.
In order to increase the action of the centrifugal force, eccentrics 13 are placed on the pairs of planet wheels and holes 78 are drilled in the body of these wheels.
In this case the planetary wheel 2 plays the same role as the housing of the gear mechanism of the previous example.
The operation is briefly described below. If the motor shaft 1 is started at the same time as the planetary wheels in a clockwise direction, the planetary wheel 2 is immobilized by the roller gear device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
The planetary wheels entering into rotation and causing a reduction in speed of the controlled pinion 7, corresponding to the ratio of the diameters of the planetary wheels. The passage from the gear transmission to the direct coupling takes place, as has been indicated above, for example by momentary disengaging of the motor or by reducing its speed or even by increasing the speed of the reoeper shaft.
Under the action of the controlled pinion, the planetary wheel 2 turns in this case in the same direction as the engine acre and at a speed corresponding to the delayed movement of the engine shaft 1 and the planetary wheels) and is coupled directly. with this shaft when they rotate in synchronism and under the action of the centrifugal force developed by the eccentric masses, the planet wheels remain stationary on their shafts. If now the speed of the motor increases or if, this motor being coupled, the centrifugal force developed by the moving masses increases, the shafts remain in direct coupling.
However, if the speed of the motor shaft is reduced in proportion to the increase in the load, the centrifugal drilling then decreases and, when it becomes less than the torque transmitted by the motor to the planet wheels The wheels begin to turn, so that the motive force is again transmitted by the gear mechanism.
The construction which has just been described has, among other things, the advantage of having a mass subjected to the action of centrifugal force which rotates regularly with the motor shaft and that the mechanism can play the role of flywheel for the engine.
Likewise in this example, a coupling can be used.
In the embodiments described, the mechanism has been assumed to be applied to the transmission of power from an engine to

a motor vehicle, but it can also be used for the transmission of force between two shafts in general from any source of energy.
A very simple and / at the same time safe mechanism is obtained by the various devices described above, by means of which the passage to the different transmission stages can be carried out automatically and smoothly; it can also be ordered by hand. In addition, it can be established as a two or more stage transmission device.
It goes without saying that modifications of detail can be made to the transmission mechanism which has just been described without departing from the scope of the present invention.
