"" SYSTEMES AMPLIFICATEURS.- ""
----IL
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"" AMPLIFIER SYSTEMS.- ""
The present invention relates to amplifier systems and particularly to systems of the type comprising an automatic volume control device.
As the radio signals are subject to fading, it has hitherto been proposed to provide in radio receiver systems, means for compensating for the effects of fading.
Among the systems proposed, mention may be made of the use of polarization devices by which the amplification carried out by the tubes decreases when the intensity of the signal received increases and vice versa.
----HE
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Such systems have the disadvantage of giving rise to certain noises when the tuning is changed and particularly if the automatic volume control has been previously adjusted to reduce the intense signals from a nearby station to an intensity pleasing to the ear , given that the system practically recovers its maximum sensitivity, while it is out of tune with the carrier wave of said station.
The object of the present invention is therefore to provide, in a signal amplifier system, volume control means which will remedy the aforementioned drawback.
A further object of the invention is to provide an amplifier system of the type described which can be adjusted for any volume of sound at the output, independent of the automatic volume control device.
By realizing the invention applied to a radio receiver and amplifier system of the superheterodyne type, comprising medium frequency amplifier stages, it is preferable to provide means controlled by the signals to automatically control the DC gate bias applied to a device. high frequency amplifier tube, and m a first medium frequency amplifier tube! to provide, moreover, means by which the amplified signal is applied, at a practically constant intensity, to an input circuit of a second medium frequency amplifier tube,
and also to provide hand-operated control means by which a desired fraction of the voltage generated across said circuit by the amplified signal can be applied to the gate of the last mentioned tube.
The characteristics of the invention are enumerated in particular in the claims appended hereto, the invention as well as the principles of operation and the details of implementation will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows schematically the connections of the main circuits of a radio receiver of the superheterodyne type constructed in accordance with the present invention *

Well known, the figures have been simplified by omitting the sources of signals applied to the input circuit of the system. Most of the coupling circuits between the successive tubes have not been shown.
The system shown in the figure comprises a first high frequency amplifier tube 1, a first medium frequency amplifier tube
3, an oscillator tube 5, a first detector tube 7, a second medium frequency amplifier tube 9, a second detector tube 11, and a power amplifier stage consisting of several thermionic devices 13 connected in push-pull and a volume control tube 15.
The high frequency amplifier tube and the first and second medium frequency amplifier tubes are preferably tubes of a type similar in characteristics to the tube commercially designated UY-235, the oscillator tube, the second detector tube and the central volume tube are tubes of a type having characteristics similar to those of the tube commercially designated UY-227, the tubes used in the power amplifier stage, are tubes of a type of character- The characteristics are identical to those of the tube commercially designated UX-245 while the first detector tube is a tube of a type of characteristics similar to those of the tube commercially designated UY-224.
A single source 17 of high direct voltage is provided, which source may be constituted by a rectifier of any suitable type supplied by an alternating current distribution network 19. The heating current of the filaments and cathodes of the amplifier tubes is supplied by the secondary winding 21 of a transformer 23, the primary winding of which can be supplied by the same source 19 supplying the rectifier 17. The heating current of the tube 15 of the automatic volume control is preferably , supplied by an individual secondary winding 25. The same primary winding of the transformer can, of course, be used to supply high voltage to the rectifier and low voltages for heating the filaments of the different tubes.
The first medium frequency amplifier tube 3 is provided with an output circuit consisting of an indontance 27 and a tuning capacitor 29 which circuit is coupled to the input circuit of the automatic volume control tube, the latter circuit comprising of preferably an inductor 31 and a tuning capacitor 33.
An input circuit, consisting of an inductor 35 shunted by a resiostance 37 is also inductively coupled to the inductance 27 of the circuit.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
output of the first medium frequency amplifier tube 3 and means, such as a cursor 39, are provided to insert in a variable manner a desired frequency of the resistance between the grid and the cathode of the second medium frequency amplifier tube.
Using the cursor, any given fraction of the voltage generated by the first medium frequency amplifier tube at the terminals of inductance 35 can be applied to the gate of the second medium frequency amplifier tube 9, the potentiometer constituting thus a manually adjustable volume control device
In a system according to the present invention, the received high frequency signal is applied by means of an input circuit tuned or not (not shown) to the first high frequency amplifier tube 1, is amplified there, and is then transmitted to the first detector tube 7.
The oscillations generated by the oscillator tube 5 are also applied to the first detector tube, and the beat frequency or the average frequency is amplified in the first medium frequency amplifier tube 3 and appears in its output circuit formed by the inductor 27 and the capacitor 29 from where it is applied to the inductor 31 of the input circuit of the tube 15 of the automatic volume control unit and to the untuned inductance 35 of the input circuit of the second tube @ medium frequency amplifier 9.
As the last mentioned input circuit is not tuned, the voltage transmitted to it by the output circuit of the first medium frequency amplifier tube, will be approximately only one tenth of the voltage supplied to the input circuit. of the volume control tube.
As shown in the figure, a resistor 41 shunted by a capacitor 43 is inserted in the plsque circuit of the control tube, said resistor also being inserted in the gate circuits of the first high frequency amplifier tube 1 and of the first average frequency amplifier tube 3. For this, the potential of the grids of the amplifiers 1 and 3, with respect to the cathodes of the tubes, is partly determined by the voltage drop across said resistance, a drop produced by the current passing through said resistor to supply the plate of the volume control tube
The grid of the automatic volume control tube is negatively polarized with respect to its cathode so that the plate current is zero.
Biasing is done by connecting the gate directly to the ne-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
gative of the high voltage source 17 and by connecting the cathode of the tube to a point 45 of the high voltage supply circuit of the system, which point is at a positive potential with respect to said negative terminal.
When the beat frequency corresponding to a received signal is applied to the input circuit of the automatic volume control tube, there will be an increase in current in the resistance inserted in the plate circuit of said tube, the increase of current is consequently the voltage drop across the resistor, being proportional to the amplitude of the signal received - An increase in the voltage drop across the resistor across the gates of the first high frequency amplifier tube and the first amplifier tube medium frequency more negative, and the amplitude of the signal more intense, is transmitted by an amplifier tube whose degree of amplification is reduced.
With proper tuning the system will provide a beat frequency of nearly constant intensity to the un-tuned input circuit of the second medium-frequency amplifier tube, regardless of variations in wave intensity. carrier of a received signal caused by fading.
Each transmitting station, included in the receiving range of the improved system, when the system is tuned to its carrier wave frequency, can be represented by a substantially constant characteristic voltage produced across inductor 35.
As the screen tubes allow very high amplification, even the weakest signals can produce voltages at the terminals of the coil 35 higher than those required for the loudspeaker to produce a suitable volume of sound.
The sound volume is adjusted by hand by moving the slider 39 so as to apply to the second medium frequency amplifier tube 9 only the voltage sufficient to give good hearing.
Another object of the invention is to amplify a volume control controlled by hand to a tube preceding the second mid-frequency amplifier tube or another tube in the series, for example the second detector tube.
In the latter case, as shown in FIG. 2, it is advantageous to couple the output circuit 47 of the second medium frequency amplifier tube 9 to the tuned input circuit 49 of the second detector tube by means of a circuit. closed 51 provided with a voltage divider 53 by means of which the voltage pro
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
picked up by the signal and applied to the second detector tube can be varied as desired, and to couple said circuit 47 to the input circuit of a volume control tube (not shown) using conductor 54.
A screen 55 can be arranged between the output inductance of the second medium frequency amplifier tube and the input inductance of the second detector tube.
This latter modification of the invention is particularly applicable to receivers having only one. single medium frequency amplification stage, since the lower amplification due to the removal of one of the medium frequency amplifying stages makes it appropriate to associate the hand-controlled volume control with a tuned circuit rather than with a untuned circuit, as shown in Figure 1.
it is clear from the above description of the improved amplifying system, that since the manually controlled volume control acts on a tube placed in the series after the tubes controlled by the automatic volume centering tube, the switching from one tuning to another can be done with much less noise than with previously known systems, provided with a hand-operated control and acting on a high frequency circuit *
The selectivity of the system, improved by an automatic volume control tube, is less than in previously known systems, which is advantageous, since for the tuning of the receiver to two transmitters of neighboring wavelengths the amplification increases less by what the carrier wave of a station,
by the action of the volume control tube, the sensitivity decreases for a longer time and the carrier wave of the nearest station is more quickly effective. This fact results in much less noise, and decreases sideband interference *
Although having described and represented several embodiments of the invention, it is understood that one does not wish to limit oneself to these particular forms given simply by way of example and without any restrictive character. that, consequently, all the variants having marl principle and marl object that the arrangements indicated above would fall as them within the framework of the present invention.
