- Improvements to television receivers ........
The use of the CROOKES tube mounted in the form of a cathodic oscillograph has already been proposed for a long time to reproduce scenes from television, telecine, etc., but a difficulty which has delayed its application is the inadequacy. of light produced by the mobile cathode spot on the fluorescent surface which forms a screen.
The present invention consists in using a cathode beam, not to directly produce light, but simply as a movable conductor capable of connecting, with high speed, an electric source and various @

points of a surface forming the cathode of a rare gas bulb and thus allowing the successive illumination of these different points according to a movement controlled by the two directing fields of the oscillograph and with an intensity proportional to that of the beam, thus achieving the synthesis of the image in television, generally obtained with a modulated luminescent gas tube and a mechanical explorer.
The system will therefore include a cathodic oscillograph, the wall opposite to the cathode of which will be electrically connected by a large number of points to a surface made up of the same number of conducting points and placed in the luminescent gas bulb. said bulb containing another electrode (anode) suitably arranged so as not to obstruct the view, by an observer, of the light spot produced at the end of the conductors, each of which behaves successively like a very small cathode in the lamp. A suitable potential difference is applied between the anode of this lamp and the cathode of the oscillograph.
FIG. 1 shows, by way of example, a possible embodiment of the system, the lamp being contiguous to the oscillograph; it could be far away and have larger dimensions.
The electron beam.!: Emitted by the cathode K, modulated by the anode g and directed by the pair of perpendicular capacitors Cl and C is projected with a suitable concentration on the wall P. - In this one has been inserted a quantity (several thousand) of fine conductive wires corresponding to both the interior of the oscillograph and the interior of the bulb of the N lamp. A peripheral anode ABCD was placed in this bulb filled under a pressure of a few millimeters of neon and helium, for

example. A potential difference U is applied between this anode and K.
One could provide for the replacement of the insulating wall P, provided with a series of small conductors, by a thin semi-conductive wall; under these conditions, a spot of light appears in the lamp opposite to where the cathode beam hit the wall.
The voltage U is chosen to be sufficient so that the current passing through the beam is large enough to create, by its passage through the gas, a strong luminescence by ionization.
