<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
trique.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"MANUFACTURING PROCESSES OF NICKEL STEELS"
The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of nickel steels, of which a number of varieties are commercially available. High strength nickel and nickel-chromium steels are known, for example, widely used in the automotive industry; steel containing about 35% nickel and which is known commercially as invar; nickel-chromium stainless steels, the prototype of which contains around 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
The invention relates particularly to stainless steels containing, with nickel, sufficient chromium so that they
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
highly resistant to corrosion but is also applicable to the manufacture of other nickel steels.
The metals which are to constitute the alloy are usually introduced into the steel by adding them in the metallic state. Thus, in the manufacture of nickel-chromium stainless steels, chromium is usually added in the form of ferrochrome. In other processes for the manufacture of steel alloys, known as "direct processes", a chemical compound of a metal to form the alloy is reduced in the presence of a steel bath. in which this metal is thus incorporated.
Direct processes have been particularly chosen for the manufacture of stainless steels, but only for the introduction of chromium. In the manufacture of nickel steels, nickel is always added in the reduced state, such as a nickel or a commercially pure nickel alloy, and this even when the chromium is introduced into this steel by a direct process.
According to the present invention, the introduction of nickel into a nickel steel is obtained by decomposing matte (nickel sulphide) with silicon in the presence of a steel bath. A significant saving is thus realized, the price of the nickel metal being considerably higher than the price of an equal quantity of nickel in the form of matte. The reaction between heavy metal sulphides and silicon, thanks to which these sulphides are reduced, is known, but as far as the Applicant is aware, there is no indication that this reaction could be applied to the direct manufacture of carbon steels. nickel sufficiently low in sulfur to meet the most stringent requirements.
The silicon used to reduce nickel matte can be used as commercial silicon or ferro-silicon, but in most cases it is beneficial.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to use a silicon alloy which itself contains the metal to be introduced into the steel. Thus if an alloy of silicon and nickel or ferro-nickel silicon is used to reduce the nickel matte, that matte and the reducing agent will both contribute to the introduction of nickel into the steel. The reducing agent may also contain other metals to be introduced into the alloy, for example chromium, either together with the nickel or in place of the nickel. Any other metal alloyed with silicon in the reducing agent will of course be incorporated into the steel.
A serious difficulty in the manufacture of stainless steels results from the fact that the carbon content of these steels must be extremely low. In accordance with the present invention, in order to make sufficiently low carbon steels, it is necessary to use reducing agents containing enough silicon to remove substantially all of the carbon therefrom. Commercial silicon and ferro-silicon grades which have high silicon content do not contain enough carbon to give rise to disadvantages but if the reducing agent is rich in chromium it has such a strong tendency to absorb carbon. carbon that the silicon content of this reducing agent must be high, usually 30% or more, to sufficiently lower the carbon content.
When the reducing agent is an alloy of silicon and nickel or a silicon ferro-nickel containing little or no chromium, a silicon content of 25% is usually suitable. The virtually carbon-free ferro-chromium silicon which is an excellent reducing agent for the present process, in its application to the manufacture of nickel-chromium-containing steels, and particularly stainless steels, can be obtained by simultaneously reducing chromite and silica with carbon in an electric furnace
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
cudgel.
The nickel matte reduced with carbon in an ordinary furnace gives the metal so contaminated with carbon and sulfur that it cannot be used in the manufacture of steel, but if the silica is reduced with the matte one obtains a An alloy of silicon and nickel poor in carbon and sulfur, which can be used very advantageously as a reducing agent in the process according to the invention. According to this variant, the nickel is extracted from the matte in two different ways, one via the silicon-nickel and the other directly from the matte with which the silicon-nickel reacts, and is introduced into the steel. nickel obtained.
The invention is also aimed at reducing a compound of any other metal to be introduced into the alloy, such as chromite, with nickel matte and silica, thereby making it possible to obtain a reducing agent containing several metals. that can be introduced into the alloy.
The invention will now be described in its particular application to the manufacture of stainless nickel-chromium steels, into which chromium and nickel are introduced by a direct process.
Chromium ore, nickel matte and reducing agent containing silicon are used, these different bodies preferably having to pass through an 8 mesh screen. In some cases it may be advantageous to use these materials in two distinct masses: one containing the chromium ore and the reducing agent and the other the nickel matte and the reducing agent; the mineral, chromium, matte, nickel and the reducing agent may also form a single mass. In any case, the materials to be reduced and to be reduced must be mixed well. De 1 =: lime is added as a flux and it may sometimes be advantageous to add other fluxes such as fluorspar.
The mixture is introduced into a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
an open-air electric arc furnace, of the common type, and at a rate such that melting occurs in a uniform manner and a fluid slag bath is maintained at all times. A low carbon steel bath can be placed inside the furnace, before the start of melting, either by melting scrap steel and decarburizing them, if necessary, or by feeding the furnace with metal. melted from a bessemer or a deck oven.
Alternatively, the scrap steel can be incorporated into the melt bed or even introduced into the furnace after the melting has been completed.
To obtain an alloy poor in sulphide, it is possible to operate with a strongly basic slag; looking more particularly at the ratio of CaO to SiO2, it is preferable to keep it at least equal to 2 and a ratio of 3 or even higher may be satisfactory. In the case where strongly basic slag is used, it may be advantageous to act on the fluidity of the slag by adding fluorspar.
The following example highlights the production of a hot stainless steel referred to as 18-8 stainless steel and the results that can be achieved ::. by the improved direct process according to the invention.
A mass of steel is melted in an electric steel furnace, this mass being decarburized by means of an oxidizing slag, until it contains only 0.02% carbon.
Most of the oxidant slag is drained off.
