<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

La f ig. 12 est une vue en coupe verticale transversale saivant la ligne 12-12 de la fig. 11 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
L'arbre 31 porte, entre les deux vis sans fin 30, une roue dentée 32, par l'intermédiai- re de laquelle l'arbre 31 reçoit an mouvement de rotation autour de son axe dans le but d'entraîner les deux trains d'engrenages 30, 29, 27 et 26, de façon à faire tourner les deux pales 18 simultanément et en,sens opposé autour de le or axe longitudinal et à faire ainsi varier le pas de l'hé- lice. Pour actionner convenablement les deux pales, dans le but de modifier lear pas dans des sens opposés convenables, l'une des vis sans fin 30 comporte an pas à droite et l'au- tre vis sans fin comporte an pas à gauche, tandis qae tous les aattes engrenages correspondants des deux trains ont des pas correspondants;

deux pales dans d::s sens opposés aatoar de lear axe longita- dinal c:omman, ce qui cornus on le comprendra, a poar résultat de modifier le pas de chaque pale dans le mme sens effec- tif.Les pales sont naturellement relises ontre elles,par les trains d'engrenages décrits, de telle manière qu'elles atteignent en marna temps le plan correspondant à an pas nal (fig. 2);

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
en prise avec la roae dentée 32 (fig. 3 oa fig.

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Pour déplacer les pièces 50 et 51, il est prévu le dispositif saivant. Autour de la pièce 51 est montée ane ba-. gae rotative-57, comportant an bras de manoeuvre 58;

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
Les parties se trou- vant dans la position représentée sur la fig. 7, il est clair qu'un mouvement de rotation de la bague 57 vers la droite (sar la fig. 8),- mouvement de rotation qui, il y a lieu de se le rappeler, n'a pas communiqué de déplacement à la piè- ce extérieure 51,- produit le déplacement da goujon 59 vers le bas dans la partie angulaire 61b de la rainare de came 61 de la pièce intérieure 50 et fait coopérer ce goujon avec la rainure de came, de façon à déplacer la pièce 50 en arrière vers la position de la fig. 9;
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
14. Cet instrument peat comprendre ane aiguille-index 87, montée sur an pivot, an pignon à chaîne 88 porté par ce pivot, et ane chaîne 89 passant sar ce pignon à chaîne et attachée, à une extrémité, à an res- sort de tension 90 et, à son antre extrémité, à an câble 91, relié à la tige-poassoir 81,. de façon à être actionné par celle-ci.
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
lorsque la pièce tabulaire 37, portant les vis sans fin 38, 39, est déplacée en avant de façon à amener la vis sans fin 39 en prise avec la roue dentée 32, l'oreille ICI de cette pièce 37 déplace toutefois le bras 99 en avant dans la position représentée en traits interrompus sar la fig. 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>

PATENT OF INVENTION "Improvements to aax propellers"
The present invention relates generally to propellers and particularly to variable-pitch type propellers. The invention is described in its particular application to airplanes and other aerial devices for which it is particularly intended, although, as will be understood, the invention is also applicable to propellers or ventilators employed in many other cases. The great advantages and utility residing in the application of variable-pitch propellers to airplanes or balloons are well known and need not be described at length.
It is sufficient to indicate that, in the use of such a propeller, the pitch is reduced in order to allow the aircraft to quickly gain speed and also to increase its climbing power, and that the pitch is increased. from the propeller to walk at high speed and aassi to fly at high altitudes, in the bat de mieax attack the thin air. In the battles mention-

born above, we give the propeller a positive pitch or not corresponding to the advancement, although the propeller can also be brought, passing through a zero pitch or neatre, to a negative pitch or a corresponding pitch in reverse, when the propeller acts as a brake.
The invention aims to provide a mechanical device for varying the pitch of the propeller blades, this device being of such a nature that the pitch of the propeller can be varied and adjusted. propeller reliably and with a high degree of precision.
Another object of the invention is to obtain a simple and safe device, comprising parts subject to wear and offering full guarantees and safety in service.
According to an important characteristic of the present invention, it is the very rotational movement of the propeller which constitutes the source of motive force for modifying the pitch of the blades of the propeller. For this purpose, it is preva an en- control gear, mounted so as not to be able to rotate with respect to the propeller means and arranged so as to be able to be brought into engagement with a gear mounted in the means and rotating with the latter, the latter gear being imperatively connected to the base of the propeller blade, this blade being mounted in the hub in such a way that one can adjust its angalar position by automatic rotation of its own longitudinal axis. - The hub, by turning,
rotates the gear which it carries and meshes with the fixed control gear, and thus causes it to actuate the propeller blade so as to modify its pitch, the two gears in engagement being brought out of engagement when the propeller blade has the desired pitch.
The invention also has the effect of obtaining a device for indicating the pitch of the propeller, so as to help the operator to adjust this pitch.
The aim of the invention is to obtain a device

tif by which the instrument, indicating the pitch of the propeller, is automatically connected to the propeller in order to indicate the pitch of the latter by actuating the control device to modify the pitch of the propeller. propeller, and is automatically disengaged, when the control device is brought into the inactive position.
The invention is hereinafter described in detail with reference to a preferred embodiment of the invention, which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 13 is a partial sectional view of a detail of Fig, 1; and
Fig. 14 shows, in a less diagrammatic way, an instrument indicating the pitch of the propeller.
With reference to the drawings, and more particularly to figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, 10 designates the propeller shaft of the motor, the front part of which is indicated at 11, and 12 generally designates the means, of the propeller, which is keyed on the shaft. 10., as shown at 13, and is brought and held in position thereon by means of an ecroa profile14.
The moyea 12 has a shape such that it comprises opposed recesses 16, constituting housing for receiving the base cylindrical parts 17 of the helix blades 18. Two blades are shown here on the propeller, although it is It is obvious that the invention is applicable to propellers or ventilators comprising any desired number of blades.
The base cylindrical parts 17 of the heide blades are mounted, so as to be able toarner, in appropriate bearings, formed in the recesses 16, For example, there is shown radiaax bearings 19, and the basic cylindrical parts of the blades are shown as comprising wide flanges 20, with conical bearing faces 21, directed outwardly and bearing

against tapered roller bearings 22. The hub 12 is founded transversely along a plane passing through the axis of the recesses 16, the propeller being assembled by fitting the two halves of the hub around the bases of the blades and connecting them together by bolts, as shown in 24.
The inner end of each blade base 17 extends into the cavity 23, formed inside the body of the hub, and carries, inside this cavity, a helical wheel 26, each of which meshes with a worm
27; the worm screws 27 are mounted by the shafts 28, extending rearwardly in the hub 12 and toàrillée in suitable bearings formed therein. The two shafts 28 are parallel to the antrum and are arranged on the same side of the propeller shaft 10. This construction may require the use of balancing counterweights (not shown). on the other side of the propeller shaft 10.
Sar the rear ends of the shafts 28 are fixed helical roaes 29, which mesh with; worm screws 30, mounted on opposite ends of a transverse shaft 31, which is journaled in the wall of the means, as shown at 32a (see Fig. 5).
The shaft 31 carries, between the two worm screws 30, a toothed wheel 32, through the intermediary of which the shaft 31 receives a rotational movement around its axis in order to drive the two trains of gears 30, 29, 27 and 26, so as to rotate the two blades 18 simultaneously and in opposite directions around the longitudinal axis and thus to vary the pitch of the propeller. In order to properly actuate the two blades, in order to modify the pitch in suitable opposite directions, one of the worms 30 has a right-hand pitch and the other worm has a left-hand pitch, while the other worm has a left-hand pitch all the corresponding gear brackets of the two trains have corresponding pitches;
consequently the rotational movement of the toothed wheel 32 around its axis actuates the two

they can, from this, be actuated in such a way as to increase the pitch in the positive direction or in the negative direction, according to the direction in which the toothed wheel 32 is rotated. As a result, we can either increase , or reduce the pitch of the propeller blades, between the limits of the positive and negative pitches, by driving the toothed wheel 32 in the appropriate direction.
The mechanism intended to drive the toothed wheel thus

ment, each of which can, by r year àép1aoenBnt longitudinal of the tabular part 37, carrying these endless screws, be brought into engagement with the toothed wheel 32, controlling the angalar displacement of the propeller blades. As this toothed wheel 32 must be able to come into engagement with a worm with right-hand pitch and a worm with right-hand pitch, its tooth is cut straight without helical pitch.
The detailed description of the mode of operation of the gears is given further; we can however note here

in engagement with the toothed roae 32 (fig. 3 oa fig. 4) -the tabular part 37, carrying these worm screws remaining fixed.-The rotational movement of the propeller means around its axis (qai is equal The axis of the worm screws 38 and 39) causes the toothed wheel 32 to be rotated and by means of the shaft 31, which act, by means of the gear trains described, so as to make the blades turn. However, when the tabular part 37 is in its neatre position, that is to say its position in which neither the worm 38 nor the screw 39 is engaged with the toothed wheel 32 (fig. . 2), this toothed roae 32 remains fixed on its axis 31 and the propeller blades are not held where they have been brought.
To thus actuate the tabular pit 37, carrying the worm screws, the rear end of this part 37 is articulated to the arm 40 (see fig. 2) which can be pivoted, at an intermediate point of its length, on a post 41, extending from the engine, and at the outer end of which is connected a connecting rod 42. thereof extends rearwardly, as shown in FIG. 2a and is connected to an operating lever 4, mounted so as to pivot.
This lever 44 is represented as being handled by a ball 45, soamise to the action of a spring and arranged so as to be able to be lodged in the notches 47 of a plate in the form of a sector 48, in the bat. 'Engage lever 44 exactly in any one of the three positions of tabular piece 37 shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. when the lever 44 is engaged on the middle notch, as shown in fig. 2a, the part 37, carrying the worms 38 and 39, moves to its neutral position, as shown in FIG. 2, and the toothed wheel 32 is equidistant between them. endless visxxxxxx 38 and 39.

are by oonséqaont aa rest and the blades remain with the pitch to which they were set. The blades are held ime.àively in this position (oa in mowing another setting position), since the helical gear trains between the toothed wheel 32 and the blades have

Sar fig. 2, the blades are shown as being in the neutral position oa corresponding position

a az1 not nal, but it is clear that when the tabalaire part 37, carrying the screws, at the end of Z8 and 59, is found in a neatre position with respect to the toothed wheel 32, the n3 palms are not néeGssajreID3nt also in their neutral position, but S {tLPa.will see and remain in the position they were last taken to, which may correspond to any step. It will be assumed all times, for the simplicity of the explanations, that the blades are first found in the corresponding position to not be zero, as shown in fig. 2.
To increase the pitch of the blades in the positive direction or for forward propulsion, the propeller shaft and the means being driven by a confined, rotational movement, the lever 44 is moved backwards, which acts, by means of the arm 40, so as to move the part 37 forward, carrying the worm screws 38 and 39, and thus bring the worm 39, which has no

When the worm 39 engages with the toothed roae 32, this roae
EMI8.6
They roll the toothed 32 and the shaft 31 simply around the axa when the worm 39 is moved forward against the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
toothed roae 32; this action is immediately understood when one considers the worm 39 as a rack, brought into engagement with the toothed roae 32 by a longitudinal displacement.
When the worm 39 is fully engaged with the toothed roae 32, however, it is held stationary, and the toothed roae 32 and the shaft 31, turning aatoar of this worm with the means of propeller, receive a movement of rotation to the right (that is to say in the direction of the needles of a watch) aatoar of the axis as indicated by the arrow in fig. 3; therefore toothed gear 32 transmits motion to gear trains 30, 29, 27, and 26, going to propeller blades; it is known that the blades receive an angular rotational movement aatoar from their longitadinal axis, as described purkplus haat.
When it is noted that the blades have reached the desired pitch, the lever 14 is returned to its central position oa neatre, so that the tabular part 37, carrying the endless screws 38, and 39 is returned to the neatre position of the fig. 2, the toothed roae 32 "rolling" again by the worm 39. It will be understood that the blades are then in a position as shown in FIG. 3, while the gears 32 and 39 will be returned to Position neatre of fig. 2.
The ratio between the pitch of the worm screws 38 and 39 and the pitch of the blades peat to be close to 20.00: 1; and the adjustment of the angular position of the blades will then be sufficiently slow, even when the propeller shaft is at a high speed, so that the blades can be brought to an undesired with great precision. When the blades have reached the desired pitch and during the time that the worm 39 oa 39 is moved to be taken out of engagement with the toothed wheel 32, this toothed wheel 32 can receive some additional displacement, but, with the power ratio
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
vee mentioned above, the additional movement communicated to the blades is negligible.
In practice, however, it is observed that the worm screw 38 or 39 can be brought out of engagement with the toothed roae 32 without any subsequent movement being communicated to the toothed roae 32, by withdrawing for this purpose the worm gear just fast enough to allow toothed roae 3 to come out of engagement with this worm gear.
On the other hand, in the event that it is necessary to move the blades from the neatro position, corresponding to a nal pitch (shown in fig. 2) to a position corresponding to a negative pitch or to a reverse gear. , as shown in FIG. 4, the lever 44 is moved forward, so as to push back the part 37 carrying the worm screws 38, 39, and thus bring the worm 38, which has a left pitch, into engagement with the toothed wheel 32% In this case, the toothed roae 32 receives a rotational movement to the left (ie counterclockwise), as represented by the arrow in fig.
4, and therefore the blades are brought into the position of FIG. 4. The lever 44 is naturally returned to its neutral position when the blades have received the desired negative pitch; at this moment the blades will be in a position as shown in fig 4, while the gears will again be in the position shown in fig 2.
Assuming now that the blades are in a position corresponding to a positive pitch, as shown in fig. 3, and if it is desired to increase the pitch further, the lever 44 will be moved so as to bring the worm 39. with a right-hand pitch, in engagement with the toothed wheel 32 until the desired pitch is reached; a on the contrary, if you want to reduce the pitch, you will actuate the lever 44 so as to bring the worm 38, with pitch
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
on the left, engaged with toothed roae 32; the gears will then be driven in the opposite direction and the blades will receive an angular movement in the opposite direction, decreasing the pitch.
Similarly, when the blades are placed in a position corresponding to a negative pitch, as shown in fig. 4, we peat actuate the lever 44, so as to bring one or. the worm gear 38 or. 39 in engagement with toothed roae 32, to increase or decrease the pitch.
It will be noted from the drawings that when the gears are in the neutral position, the left-hand worm 38 is in front of the toothed wheel 32, and the worm with half-pitch. right 39 is behind toothed roae 32; because of this arrangement of the gears, if, when the toothed wheel 32 is engaged with one or the other of the worm screws 38 or 39, the blades come to be immobilized in any position, for example by a jamming of the gears connecting these blades together, the worm 38 oa 39 will of itself come out of engagement with the toothed wheel 32 and will thus automatically return the gears to the neutral position.
Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive show a variant of the control device for the toothed wheel 32; the toothed roae 32 carried by the means and the mechanism connected thereto are only represented in these figs. s to 10, since the other parts may be substantially similar to those previously described. The embodiment shown in these figs. 7 to 10 in order to reduce the longitudinal congestion, in lestas where. the propeller shaft of the motor may not be long enough to accommodate the control mechanism of the first described embodiment.
In the present case, it is also preva the tabular part 36,

The parts being in the position shown in fig. 7, it is clear that a rotational movement of the ring 57 to the right (sar fig. 8), - a rotational movement which, it should be remembered, did not impart a displacement to the outer part 51, - produces the displacement of the pin 59 downwards in the angular part 61b of the cam groove 61 of the inner part 50 and causes this pin to cooperate with the cam groove, so as to move the part 50 back towards the position of fig. 9;
the worm 38 finally fully engages the toothed wheel 32, when the stud 59 has reached the outer end of the part 61b of the cam groove 61. The rotational movement of the ring 57 to the left, - movement which, we can remember
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
pellera, moved the outer part 51 to the left in fig. 10, - causes the displacement of the pin 59 upwards in the circular part 61a of the cam groove 61 of the part 50, and consequently does not impart any movement to this part 50.
Thus, a rotational movement of the ring 57, in one direction from the non-title position, brings one of the worms into engagement with the toothed wheel 32, while leaving the other worm motionless, while that a rotational movement of the penal colony 57 in the other direction brings the other endless screw into engagement with the toothed wheel 32, leaving the first endless screw immobile.
Figs. 11 and 12 show another variant of the invention, also intended to achieve a saving in longitudinal space, when the propeller shaft does not have sufficient length to conveniently accommodate the first embodiment described.
In this case, figs. 11 and 12 there are also provided the toothed wheel 32, the shaft 31 and the worms 30. I? Oar to leave the necessary place for certain parts of this embodiment, which will be described below, the helical wheel 29a, with which it engages the worm 30, is mounted externally to the shaft 31; the shaft 28a, which carries this helical roae 29a extends towards the worm 27 and the helical wheel 26 coming out at a certain angle, as indignant in FIG. 11.
The tubular part 36, extending from the engine and encircling the propeller shaft, as well as the part 37, which can slide longitudinally on this part 36, are arranged in the same way as in the first form. embodiment of figs. 1 to 6. However, in the present variant, the worms 38 and 39 in the first case are replaced by spiral toothed wheels 38a and 39a, cut on the opposite faces of discs 70 and 71, s' extinguishing from part 37 on both sides of toothed wheel 32, as
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
clearly shown in figs. 11 and 12.
The mode of operation of this variant, which is exactly similar to that of the first embodiment, is obvious without further explanation, the only difference between the first embodiment and this variant residing in the shape of the rings. spiral teeth which mesh with the toothed wheel 32. The great savings in longitudinal space and the resulting advantages of the arrangement described last liea are obvious.
To allow the operator to read the pitch of the propeller at any time, the following device is provided. The base 17 of each propeller blade carries an eccentric 80,; on which slides the inner end of a stalk 81, mounted so as to be able to combine in a ball support 82, which s 'extends inwardly into the propeller hub from an annular plate 83, attached to the rear end of the hub body, as clearly shown in fig. 1.
A boadin spring 84, working in the compression, is arranged aatoar da s portion tabular 82 and take appai against ane flange 81a, formed sar the push rod 81; this spring 84 constantly pushes the push rod 81 back into contact with the eccentric 80. The rotational movement of the eccentric, when the propeller blade is brought into the desired angular position, produced by the longitudinal displacement of the propeller. stalk-rod 81, and the position of this rod consequently corresponds to the pitch of the propeller.
An instrument indicating the pitch of the propeller is represented at 1 in fig. 14. This instrument comprises a needle-index 87, mounted on a pivot, a chain sprocket 88 carried by this pivot, and a chain 89 passing through this chain sprocket and attached at one end to a spring. tension 90 and, at its other end, to a cable 91, connected to the rod-punch 81 ,. so as to be actuated by it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
To connect the instrument I to the push rods 81, the following device is provided. The cable 91 is housed in a guiding tube 93, this tube 'bringing the cable to the piston 94 (see fies. 1 and 13) carrying at its outer end a roller 95, which rolls, when the piston 94 is brought into the proper position, against the exterior surface of a ring 96 carried by push rod 81.
The piston 94 moves longitudinally in a cylinder 97, connected to the tube 93; a compression spring 98 is housed in the cylinder behind the piston, so as to push the latter outwards, as clearly shown in FIG. The cylinder 97 is mounted on an arm 99, pivoted by an upright 100, extending from the motear. The part 37, carrying the worm screws 38, 39, is provided behind the free end of the arm. pivoting 99, an ear 101, against which the arm 100 is normally pulled back by an tension spring 102, attached to the arm and to the motor.
When the parts are in the neutral position of fig. 1, the cylinder 97 and the piston 94 are supported by the arm 99 in a position such that the roller 95 is moved away from the rotating ring 96, and the cable 91 is clamped so that, in this position, the spring 98 , qai is stronger than the spring 90- of the indicator instrument, pulls the cable 91 so as to bring the needle-index in its position outside the known graduated scale indicated in dotted lines sar lafig. 14.
when the tabular part 37, carrying the worms 38, 39, is moved forward so as to bring the worm 39 into engagement with the toothed wheel 32, the ear HERE of this part 37 however moves the arm 99 in front in the position shown in broken lines in FIG. 1;
at this time, the roller 95 carried by the piston 94 is brought into contact with the'bagae 96, the position of which is determined by the eccentrics 80 and therefore by the pitch of the blades
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
propeller, as previously explained. when the part 37, carrying the worm screws, is brought into a position such that its worm 38 is completely in engagement with the toothed wheel 32, it is kept in exactly this position, for example due to the fact that the ball, subjected to the action of a spring, of the operating lever 44 is housed in the suitable notch of the sector 48.
The arm 99, carrying the piston 94, is therefore always brought into a fixed position when the part 37, carrying the worm screws, is moved forward so as to bring the worm 39 into engagement with the toothed wheel 32 , and the spring 98 allows the piston 94 to go back, with its roller 95 pressed against the ring 96, whatever the position of this ring may be. When the piston 94 is moved back in its cylinder 97 by its contact with its roller 95 blind the ring 96, the cable 91 can be pulled back by the spring 90, so as to move the needle 87 in the needle without the needles. of a watch, facing the graduated scale of the instrument, this needle being situated at zero of the graduated scale when the blades are in the neutral position, corresponding to a zero pitch.
In operation, the spring 98 forces the piston 94 to follow the position of the ring 96, which is forced by the springs 84 of the push rods 81, to follow the position of the eccentrics 80, and the resulting displacement of the piston 94 is. transmitted by cable 91 to. instrument I, which is graded to indicate the pitch of the propeller blades. When the part 37, carrying the worms 38, 39 is moved back so as to bring the worm 39 out of engagement with the toothed wheel 32, the spring 102 forces the pivoting arm 99 to follow the lug 101, back towards the neutral position, shown in full heads in FIG.
1.
On the other hand, when part 37, carrying the screws without
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
end, is moved backwards so as to bring the worm 38 into engagement with the toothed wheel 32, the lug 11 drives the upper arm of a lever 106, pivoted on a post 107, extending from the motor 11. The lower arm of this lever 106 is arranged to engage the pivoting arm 99 just when this arm 99 is in the neutral position, as shown in solid lines in FIG. 1.
When the upper arm of the lever 106 is moved in. rear by the lug 101 in the position in broken lines, the lower arm of this lever 106 acts against the pivoting arm 99, so as to move it forward in the same operating position as before, as indicated in dotted lines on fig. 1, so that the piston 94 and its roller 95 will again come into contact with the ring 96.
when the part 37, carrying the worm screws, is then brought forward in the neatre position, the lever 106 is released by the lug 101 and consequently releases the pivoting brss 99, which then returns to its neatre position under the action of the spring 102, and in doing so, acts on the lower arm of the lever 106, so as to also return the latter to its neutral position. Therefore, the fact of bringing the worm 38 or the worm 39 into engagement with the toothed wheel 32, to adjust the pitch of the propeller blades, causes the instrament indi- cating a propeller pitch, as well as its control mechanism, in the position for which this instrument records the pitch of the blades while it is being modified.
It should be noted that the propeller pitch indicator instrument and its control mechanism register the blade pitch only when this pitch is modified and are inactive at all other times.
Although certain embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail, it is understood that this can be done without departing from the principle or the scope of
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
the invention, to make a large number of modifications to these embodiments, which have been given by way of example only.
