<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Cet étranglement a
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Dans le cas de la fig.4 les écoulements de liquide et.' un réservoir de charge vers le cylindre de frein 3 sont contrôlés par une valve 7d commandée par un électro-aimant dont l'excita- tion est suffisante pour maintenir la aite valve fermée contre l'action de la pression du réservoir de charge . L'écoulement du liquide;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Braking device.
The present invention relates to a braking device intended to correct variations in play between the brake elements and the wheels.
It has already been proposed to correct the increases in clearance by using an element normally integral with the displacements
EMI1.1
of the piston by 1 t 111tt, ': Gfill3 (i7.a7.a'e of a friction or arlalogue which acts during the loosening to stop the displacements of the piston. The correction of the increases of play is in this case carried out by adjusting towards the end of the braking stroke the relative position of the piston and the aforesaid element.
This system has the drawback of not being able to be suitable for vehicles in which there are decreases in play and particularly for vehicles in which the distance between the shoes and the wheels varies with the deflection of the suspension springs, that is to say - say with the vehicle load,
The invention has been aimed at producing a braking device which corrects both the decreases and the increases in play.
For this purpose, the invention provides that the relative position
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the element normally integral with the movements of the piston is automatically adjusted when there is a decrease in play, by the action of a member which acts when the brake blocks are applied to the wheels.
When the play increases, this relative position is automatically adjusted. , according to the invention, by the action of a fixed stop which stops the stroke of said element, when the latter has moved by a length corresponding to the normal stroke of the piston for the application of the brakes and braking.
For the correction of the play decreases, the invention is based on the fact that the engine force on the linkage is relatively low during the brake application phase and corresponds to the passive resistors and to the return springs, and, suddenly changes to a higher value after application to operate the actual braking,
The maneuver of the member moved when the brake blocks are applied can according to the invention be obtained in various ways and in particular:
a) by constituting the latter by a diaphragm piston or the like subjected on the one hand to the pressure prevailing in the brake cylinder and on the other hand to the action of a return spring whose tension is sufficient to s' oppose movement during the application stroke of the brake blocks. b) by constituting this member by an electromagnet or a solenoid whose circuit is controlled by the needle of a pressure gauge moved by the pressure of the brake cylinder so as to be closed when this pressure corresponds
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
responding to that of the start of braking. c) by the deformation of an elastic element interposed in the linkage and acting directly or indirectly on said member.
The stopping of the driving piston during loosening can also according to the invention be obtained in various ways and in particular: a) by mechanical action gave the friction between the element and the driving piston a value greater than the tension of the return spring of the motor piston and by the use of a stop intended to stop the coursa of said element after a determined loosening stroke. b) by hydraulic action by placing in the liquid discharge circuit a valve adapted so as to close the discharge duct at the end of the release stroke.
In the latter case, the valve can be made integral with the movements of the movable element with the driving piston, or be electrically controlled under the control of the movable element.
In order to obtain a rapid return to its initial position of the diaphragm piston or the like specified above, the invention provides for communicating the latter with the discharge duct by a duct whose section is su [p- higher to nelui connecting the cylinder to this discharge duct.
The accompanying drawings show by way of non-limiting example various embodiments of the invention. This extends to the various original features of the provisions represented

embodiment of the invention with hydraulic locking of the piston.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the friction system of fig.l.
Fig. 3 is a variant of Fig. 1 comprising a piston, with rapid return,
Fig. 4 relates to the electrical control of the valve placed in the evacuation duct.
Fig. 5 concerns the electrical control of the mobile element.
Fig. 6 relates to the mechanical locking of the piston during the release stroke,
Fig. 7 relates to the use of an elastic element in the linkage for the movement of the mobile element.
In the case of Figures 1 and 2, the piston 2, the rod 2a of which is joined to the brake linkage, moves against the action of a return spring 2b in a cylinder 3.
On the rod 2a is disposed an elastic collar 4 in two parts which can slide with a fairly large friction on said rod. This frictional force is obtained by springs surrounding screws 4a engaging in the two tabs of said collar. A stirrup 5 pivoted around the fixed axis 5a receives the two journals 4b fitted to the collar 4. The end of this stirrup is connected to an element 6 formed by a rod carrying a valve 6a. The active face of the piston 2 can be placed alternately in communication with a charge tank or a discharge tank respectively by the conduits 7 and 8 by the displacement of a valve 9.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In the position shown, the liquid coming from the charge tank flows through the conduits 7, 7a and the stop valve 7b and acts on the face of the piston 2.
If we assume the case of normal play, the valve 6a driven by the element 6, the caliper 5 and the friction collar 4a is in position 6a1 when the brake blocks come into contact with the brake blocks. wheels. During this application stroke of the shoes, the pressure in the cylinder 2 is relatively low and corresponds to the passive resistances and to the action of the return springs. The action of this pressure on a small piston 10 is insufficient to allow compression of the. return spring 10a of cdlui.
When the brake blocks are applied, the pressure rises sharply in the cylinder and this pressure acts to move the small piston 10 against the action of its return spring. After having completed its entire stroke, the end of a rod 10b wedged on the small piston comes to be disposed against the valve 6a located in position 6a1.
During the actual braking phase, the piston 2 continues to move bringing with it the caliper 5 and the element 6. When full braking is obtained, the valve 6a is in position 6a2, the position for which it comes apply against a fixed stop 6b.
In the case of an increase in play, the valve 6a is for example when the brake jackets are applied on the wheels, in position 6a3.11 as a result this valve will reach position 6a2 before braking total either. carried out, During the remainder of the braking stroke, this valve cannot exceed the. position 6a2 an piston rod 2a will slide into collar 4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
During the return stroke of the piston resulting from the placement of the valve 9 in position D, the valve 6a moves at the same time as the piston and closes the opening 8a after the piston has traveled a stroke corresponding to the normal stroke of releasing and releasing the brakes, This closing of the opening 8a has the effect of stopping the flow of liquid from the cylinder 3 to the discharge tank.
In the case of a reduction in play, and during braking, the valve 6a is for example in position 6a4 when the brake blocks are applied. Under the effect of the increase in pressure resulting from the application of the brakes, the piston 10 moves against the action of its spring 10a and its rod 10b moves the valve 6a to position 6a1. valve is enabled by sliding the collar 4 on the piston rod 2a.
During the actual braking stroke, the valve 6a moves from position 6a1 to position 6a2 without causing the collar 4 to slip on the rod.
When releasing, this valve stops the flow of fluid after the piston has completed its normal brake release and release stroke,
It is easy to see that whatever the variations in play, the distance between the shoes and the wheels is kept constant after loosening.
Figure 3 differs from Figure 1 in that the flow of the liquid during loosening takes place through a duct 8b of constricted section. This strangulation has
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
for the effect of lowering the pressure in the space 10c acting on the face of the small piston 10, more quickly than in the brake cylinder 3 itself, which determines a rapid return of the piston 10 to its initial position and prevents the end of the element 6 to come to act when loosening on the shank 10d fulfilling the role of the rod 10b of fig.l.
In the case of fig.4 the liquid flows and. ' a charge reservoir to the brake cylinder 3 are controlled by a valve 7d controlled by an electromagnet the excitation of which is sufficient to keep the aite valve closed against the action of the pressure of the charge reservoir. The flow of liquid;
from the brake cylinder to a waste tank! is done through a 3d valve subjected to the action of a return spring 8g and controlled by an electromagnet 8f The brake cylinder is connected to said valves on the one hand by a conduit carrying a stop valve 7b and on the other hand by a duct 8b of small section In the circuit of this electromagnet 8f is interposed a movable contact 6f carried by the element 6 integral with the movements of the piston 2 by means of the friction 4; this mobile contact cooperates with a fixed brush 6g arranged so as to open the circuit at the end of the release stroke.
A small piston 10 subjected to the action of a return spring 10a is established so as to act on the carriage 6d carrying the movable contact
When the lever 11 is placed in the position F, the circuit of the electromagnets 7f and 8f is broken which determines the arrival of the pressurized liquid in the brake cylinder through the valves 7d and 7b as well as the small duct 8b Piston 2 moves to complete the brake application stroke, during which the pressure is insufficient to
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
cause the movement of the small piston 10 against its return spring. In the case of normal play, the carriage 6d occupies the position shown in dotted lines when the brake blocks come into contact with the wheels.
If, as a result of a decrease in clearance, the carriage 6d had not at this time reached this position, the piston 10 moving under the action of the increase in pressure in the brake cylinder performs its entire stroke and pushes back the carriage in the aforesaid position, causing the collar 4 to slide on the rod 2a.
During the actual braking stroke, the carriage 6d moves so that it reaches the stop 6b at the moment of complete braking.
If, on the other hand, the play has increased, the carriage 6d exceeds the dotted position when the brakes are applied, so that before complete braking, it is stopped by the stop 6b, this stop having for effect of determining the sliding of the rod 2a in the friction collar 4.
In any case, whatever the variations in play which may have occurred, the carriage 6d is against the stop 6b at the end of the braking,
If the lever 11 is placed in the corresponding position D, on release, the electric source 13 sends its current to the electromagnet 8f through the contacts 11a, 11b, 6g and 6f which causes the opening of the valve 8d and allows the liquid to flow out of the brake cylinder through the conduit 8b under the action of the return spring 2b of the piston.
Due to the small passage section of this duct, the pressure on the

small piston 10 falls more quickly than on the motor piston 2, which results in a rapid return of this small piston to its initial position. When the carriage has come to occupy the position shown in solid lines, the circuit of the electromagnet 8f is cut off by the fact that the brush 6g has left the movable contact 6f; the valve 8d closes under the action of its spring and causes the piston to stop. Given that the distance between the brush 6g and the stop 6b is invariable, the releasing stroke of the piston is also invariable and the play between the brake blocks and the wheels is after each maneuver brought back to a constant value.
It should be noted that the piston 2 can be kept in any tightening or loosening position by bringing the lever 11 to the operating position 0 corresponding to the simultaneous closing of the two valves 8d and 8g.
Figure 5 differs from the previous figures in that the small piston 10 is replaced by an electromagnet 13 subjected to the action of a return spring 13a and the excitation of which is obtained when the blocks are applied. brake by the needle 14a of a pressure gauge 14.
During an increase in play, a bulge 6m wedged on the element 6 acts, in a manner analogous to the case of the preceding figures to determine the sliding of the collar 4 on the rod 2a by abutting the fixed stop 6b
When the clearance is reduced, the electromagnet 13 acts by its excitation to push the said bulge back into the dotted position corresponding to the position that this element should occupy during normal clearance and at the time of contact between the blocks brake and wheels.
Stopping the motor piston at the end of the release stroke

is obtained on the one hand by the fact that the element 6 comes buber against the rod lOb whose stroke ast limited and on the other hand by giving the friction between the collar 4 and the rod a value greater than the tension of the motor piston return spring 2b. It goes without saying that this arrangement may be suitable in the case of the other figures described.
In the case of FIG. 6, the value given to the friction between the collar 4 and the rod 2a is somewhat greater than the tension of the return spring 2b of the piston 2.
When the valve 9 is placed in the position F corresponding to braking, the liquid flows from the charge tank through the conduits 7, 7a and the stop valve 7b and the conduit 8b to cause the displacement of the piston 2. As soon as the shoes are applied to the wheels, the small piston 10 or possibly the electromagnet replacing it, acts to move the element 6 into the position which it should normally occupy at this time as well as it has been described in figure 1
At the end of the braking stroke, the caliper 5 comes to rest against a fixed stop 5a and integral with the cylinder.
If the valve 9 is placed in the position D corresponding to the release, the liquid flows through the pipe 8b, the valve 9 and the pipe 8 to a discharge tank, the reduced section of the pipe 8b determines in the first place the rapid return of the small piston 10 to its initial position
When the piston 2 has performed its normal stroke corresponding to the release of the brakes and release

of the wheelhouse, the caliper 5 abuts against a fixed finger 5b also integral with the brake cylinder. As a result of the relatively large value given to the friction between the collar 4 and the rod 2a the displacement of the piston is stopped at this time.
It can be seen that in these cnditions, the release stroke of the piston is always limited to a value corresponding to the distance separating the stops 5a and 5b Consequently, the value of the play between the friction elements and the wheels is kept at a constant value whatever variations may have occurred (increase or decrease in play)
The device of Figure 7 is applied by way of example in the case of using a compensated linkage comprising two levers 14 and 15 carrying brake shoes 14a and 15a and joined together by a rod 16 the lever 14 receives the braking force created by the driving piston 2 and the reaction of the linkage is supported by the bottom of the cylinder 3 by means of an elastic element 17. It goes without saying that this reaction can be supported by a part integral with the vehicle chassis instead of the bottom or cylinder.
The elastic element 17 is established so as to bend only when a force is exerted between the brake shoes and the wheels. A rod 15b articulated at the end of the lever 15 and transmitting its force to the elastic element 17 acts via an axis 15c to communicate its movement to a control lever 18 articulated at 18a around a fixed point. of the brake cylinder or of the frame and intended to act by its end on an element 6b connected to the piston rod 2a by means of the caliper 5 and the friction collar 4

This element carries a 6m bulge which, in the case of normal play between the brake blocks and the wheels, occupies the position shown in dotted lines when the brake blocks are applied,
When liquid under pressure is admitted into the brake cylinder, the piston 2 moves to take up the play by dragging the caliper 5 and the element 6 with it through the friction collar 4. . As soon as the shoes are applied to the wheels, the driving force increases and the lever 15 pivots around the shoe as a fixed point, the end of the rod 15b is applied against the bottom of the cylinder by compressing the spring 17.
This movement of the rod 15b results in a pivoting of the lever 18, the compression stroke of the elastic element 17 is determined so that the rod 6 is, in the case of a decrease in play, pushed back by the lever 18 of so that the bulge 6m comes to occupy the position shown in dotted lines.
This displacement obtained by the sliding of the collar 4 on the rod 2a has the effect of modifying the relative positions of the rod 6 and of the piston 2.
The actual braking stroke corresponds, except in the case of increased play, to the displacement: of the bulge 6m from the dotted position to. the stop 6b. In all cases (the variations in play, this bulge is against the said stopper at the end of the braking stroke.
When loosening, the stopping of the piston after a determined and constant stroke is determined by the stop of the element 6 abutting against the end of the control lever.

brush 18, the latter being blocked by the cooperation of a fixed stop 19 and the lever 15 of the wheelhouse.
It should be noted that the frictional force between the collar 4 and the rod 2a is greater than the tension of the return spring 2b of the piston. The invention also relates to the case where the elastic element 17 controls electrical devices by its deformation. , hydraulic or other which adjust the relative position of the element 6 and the motor piston according to the variations in clearance.

1. Braking device intended to correct variations in clearance between the brake elements and the wheels and in which an element normally integral with the displacements of the driving piston by means of a friction or the like allowing the relative position of this to be varied. element with respect to the driving piston, acts, after having performed a loosening stroke of determined length, to stop the movement of the piston characterized in that the relative position of this element with respect to the driving piston is adjusted automatically, during a decrease play, by the action of a member acting when the brake blocks are applied to the wheels.
