<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
"Agents for protecting against aging of natural rubbers and synthetic rubber-like masses",
It has been found that the hardly soluble products in alcohol which are obtained.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by condensation of Ó-naphthylamine with aliphatic aldehydes containing 2 or more carbon atoms in the presence of water-soluble alcohols and acids in small amounts, preferably aliphatic diacids, for example formic acid or acetic acid, and by subsequent treatment of the resinous masses thus forming with suitable liquids in which these masses are insoluble,
in particular with water rather than boiling water, constitute products which remarkably prevent aging for natural rubber species and synthetic rubber masses such as those which can be obtained for example by polymerization of butadienic hydrocrbons .
These products have the following advantages over the known condensation products of Ó-naphthylamine and aliphatic aldehydes:
They are a yellowish, odorless, extremely fine dividing powder which can easily be incorporated by rolling into rubber mixes. They are also indifferent to the accelerators-employed, in the sense that they do not hinder or activate them in their effects.
In sunlight, vulcanized products which contain the compounds in question show only minimal coloration compared to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
mixtures which contain the condensation products known until now,
The use of these products as anti-aging agents can also be effected in such a way that these products are dissolved in a suitable solvent, such as, for example, benzol and / or treated with these solutions on unvulcanized rubber mixtures.
Example: 1.7% of the product obtained by condensation of α-naphthylamine with technical aldol (55% aldol and 45% acetaldehyde) in an alcohol medium and in the presence of formic acid are added to a vulcanization mixture which comprises:
100.0 gr of rubber
30.0 gr of zinc oxide
3.8 gr of sulfur
1. 0 gr of diphenylguanidine
12.5 gr of titanium oxide (100%) and the mixture is vulcanized under a vapor pressure of 3 1/2 atm, for 30 to 50 minutes. Aging tests in the Geer furnace (70) gave after times of 2.5 and 10 days the values visible in the following table.
The values obtained with the same rubber without the addition of an anti-aging agent are also indicated in this table for comparison.
