<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figs. 1 et 2 représentent respectivement en élévation laté- rale et en coupa diamétrale et transversale, un pédalier de bicyclette agencé conformément à l'invention;
Fig. 3 représente une variante ;
Figs. 4 et 5 représentent sohématiquement d' autres varian- tes d'exécution ;
Fige.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The invention relates to crank drive mechanisms, and relates more especially, but not exclusively, to pedal cranksets of bicycles and the like.
Its main purpose is to arrange them so as to make their operation more flexible and facilitate the passage of dead points.
For this purpose it consists, -mainly) in making relatively mobile between them on the one hand the movement control member, and for example all the cranks of the crankset, to which the motor force is applied, and on the other share the controlled member, and for example the ring gear of the crankset, to which the resistive force is applied,
It also consists in placing between the two relatively mobile members, an elastic member, which can be made up of one or more elements, such and arranged:
in such a way that an excess of the motor force over the force commanded causes its deformation and or its energization, the energy stored in the said intermediate organ, during this period. CRANK DRIVE MECHANISMS, BICYCLE CRANKSET. AND SIMILAR
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
being restored when the resistance force exceeds the force mo-. tor.
It also consists preferably in arranging the arrangement in such a way that it is possible to modify, and if necessary adjust the inherent power and or the deformation of the intermediate member, so as to adapt the device to the wishes of the device. practice it
And so that one can clearly understand how such an arrangement can be practically achieved, various preferred embodiments will be described more explicitly below, given by way of example, and shown in the accompanying drawings in which
Figs. 1 and 2 show respectively in lateral elevation and in diametral and transverse section, a bicycle crankset arranged in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 3 represents a variant;
Figs. 4 and 5 represent schematically other embodiments;
Freezes. 6 and 7 show two other variants.
According to the arrangement of FIGS. 1 and 2, the collar or flange 1 integral with the crank 2 of the crankset which is generally fixed to the toothed wheel of the crankset 4, is no longer subject to this member but indeed to a plate circular provided with a shoulder 5 which engages in such a way as to be able to rotate there without playing in the circular central opening 6 of the toothed wheel 3.
On the circular plate a is mounted a yoke-shaped member 7, secured in any suitable manner, for example using screws 8,
A circular plate 9, interrupted at 10 is provided on the external face of the toothed wheel of the crankset 4 and joined to the plate
3 by suitable assembly members, -cellas the screws 11, and so as to grip the toothed wheel of the crankset without lateral play but allowing rotation,
On the other hand, on the face of the toothed wheel of the crank 3
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
which carries the plate 9, and opposite the interruption 10, there are stops such as 12, advantageously provided on the internal faces of a recessed member 16.
And, between the yoke 7 and the 'stops 12 there is an elastic orggna, advantageously constituted by a series of leaf springs 14 embedded in the yoke 7 and engaged between the stops 12.
As seen in fig. 2, a cover is provided at 141, secured to the member 13 by the screws 15 while covering the entire elastic connection device.
A system arranged in the above manner operates as follows
Assuming the described assembly completed with a crank axle, a second crank 2 arranged 1800 from the first and pedals mounted on a bicycle or similar machine, and a chain connecting the toothed wheel of the crankset to the pinion of the rear wheel of the machine, if during operation the motor force applied to the pedals exceeds the resistive force, in particular when the crank is substantially halfway down, a slip occurs between the plates 3 and 9 and the toothed wheel of the sliding pedals which results in the bending of the leaf springs 14 by planing the latter under tension.
When the crank reaches the end of its downstroke, the engine effort is considerably reduced, and the resistance force generally becomes greater. At this moment the power stored in the elastic system 14 is restored and in order to overcome the resistive force, so that the change to neutral will take place with less loss of speed than before.
The same phenomena as those described above are reproduced naturally during the downstroke and the shift to neutral of the other crank of the crankset.
Independently, the effects of the shocks communicated to the rear or driving wheel by the unevenness of the terrain and being transmitted, through the pinion of this wheel and the chain, to the toothed wheel of the crankset, will be absorbed or damped by the system.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
elastic 14, in their transmission to the cranks.
This consequently results, at the same time as a more uniform distribution of the forces, in an increase in comfort for the user.
In the arrangement of FIG. 3, the plates 3 and 9 are kept with an arrangement substantially similar to that of FIGS. 1 and 2, but a recess is provided at 16 in the toothed wheel of the crankset * A block of elastic material, such as for example ca- cutohouo, 17, is inserted into this recess and made integral, by means of the pin 18 and the nut 19, of the plate 3, while the plate 9 carries two stops 20 bearing on both sides. 'other from block 17,
A cover engaged by clamping or screwed on the stops
20 completes the provision.
In the arrangement of FIG. 4, the elastic system of FIGS. 1 and 2 has been folded up and the latter is placed on the internal face of the crank 2, between this face and the external face of the toothed wheel of the crankset.
The spring leaves 14 are embedded in a recess provided in the hub of the crank and clamped in the recess by a bolt 22 reinforcing the usual key 16 for locking the crank 2 on the crank axle.
In the arrangement of FIG. 5, the arrangement of FIG. 3, but the toothed wheel of the pedal is hollowed out so as to include a certain number of cells or housings 23 suitable for receiving elastic bloos
24 made integral with the plates 3 and 9 by pins 25, preferably engaged without play in one of the plates and screwed into the other plate.
In the arrangements of FIGS. 6 and 7, the elastic system has been transferred to the periphery of the toothed wheel of the crankset.
A ring 26 comprising the teeth consists of a gold-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
gane distinot, which can slide without play on the internal part 27 of the toothed wheel of the crankset, a lateral shoulder being provided at 28 and a lateral retaining ring being provided at 29 and secured for example by means of screws 30.
Yokes 31 are provided at suitable points on the internal part of the crankset wheel and stops 32 are provided on the ring of teeth 26, while series of leaf springs are embedded in the yokes 31 and engaged between the stops 32, the arrangement operating in a manner substantially similar to that of FIGS. 1 and 2 while retaining the perfect balance of the crankset,
Finally in fig. 7, the ring 26 is of greater internal diameter than the external diameter of the central part 27 of the bottom bracket wheel.
Internal radial stops 33 are provided on this ring and axial radial stops 34 are provided at the periphery of the internal part; compression springs 35 are engaged, forward in the driving direction, between pairs of stops 33 and 34 and compression springs 36 of appropriate force are engaged, rearward in the driving direction, between pairs of stops 33 and 34.
If desired, rolling bodies, such as rollers, balls, toothed members or the like, could be interposed between the stops 34 and the internal face of the ring 26, in order to avoid sliding forces.
As emerges from the preceding description, in ohaoun of the examples given, the power of the elastic system can be modified at will in order to make it proportional to the forces transmitted.
