<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La figure 1 est une vue en élévation latérale d'une partie d'une porte, ayant une serrure en place, le bouton étant enlevé;
La figure 2 est une coupe par II-II de la figure 1 ;

La figure 5 représente un détail, partiel- lement en coupe,d'un mode de construction différent;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"Improvements to locks"
The present invention relates to lock and latch devices and more particularly to a closing device making it possible to block the lock. The invention also relates to closing devices intended for all

first to be used on doors that you want to be able to open and close more easily on one side than on the other.
For certain interior doors such as, for example, bathroom doors, it is desirable to provide a closing mechanism which can easily be blocked on one side of the door so as to prevent accidental entry, and which, however , can be easily opened from the other side if necessary., It is not desirable to provide a closing mechanism which cannot in any case be opened from the outside, since it is sometimes necessary to have access to a room, the door of which has been closed by a person who is in said room, Furthermore, in some cases it is not desirable to have the means of easily opening the door of the room. exterior, as such means can be unwittingly employed, thus exposing the occupant of a room to an untimely entry.
'
It is also desirable, in the establishment of a closing device, adapted especially to be opened and closed from one side of the door only, to provide for the possibility of employing the closing mechanism whatever. whichever side of the door the hinges are on.
For this purpose a closing device has been provided, comprising a lock mechanism which can have a reciprocating movement and a reciprocating latch mechanism, arranged generally perpendicular to the lock mechanism, the lock mechanism and the mechanism. latch mechanism having associated parts to engage with each other, when the latch mechanism is in the

desired position to block the mechanism / lock, and to release them from each other when the latch mechanism is in another position that the latch mechanism is in another position and releases the lock mechanism.
There is further provided a lock device comprising a housing organized to adapt to a door, housing inside which is mounted the lock mechanism with reciprocating movement, the housing comprising, on either side , parts capable of receiving the latch mechanism capable of moving generally perpendicular to the lock mechanism, in order to block and release said mechanism, and the latch device which can in principle only be operated with one hand. side of the door; the latter can be made to cooperate as desired with one or other of the aforementioned parts, whereby the assembly can also be applied to doors mounted on one side or the other.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description, which relates to an embodiment of the invention currently considered to be one of the best.
In the accompanying drawing, this embodiment has been shown:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a door, having a lock in place with the knob removed;
Figure 2 is a section through II-II of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the lock mechanism shown in Figure 1, section taken in the plane of the door; Figure 4 shows a plan detail of part of the latch mechanism shown in figures
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
1, 2 and 3.
FIG. 5 shows a detail, partly in section, of a different method of construction;
Figure 6 finally shows in plan a detail of part of the latch mechanism shown in Figure 5.
'If one refers more particularly to the accompanying drawing, # .on. see that 2 designates a door having a transverse hole 3 and a groove 4 communicating the transverse hole with one of the edges of the door, which allows it to receive the lock mechanism. The lock mechanism comprises a generally cylindrical housing 5 with which are associated closure parts 6 and 7.
The parts 6 and 7 have projections 8 directed outwards, adapted to enter into corresponding slots provided in the housing 5 and intended to keep the closing parts of the housing in an immutable relationship,
Each of the closure parts 6 and 7 is associated with a hollow cylindrical boss 9 threaded and extending outwardly and generally along the axis of the housing 5.
The parts 6 and 7 and the housing 5 are held together by means of screws 10. The housing 5 is provided with an orifice 11 arranged laterally and for a purpose which will be indicated.
Joined with the inner part of the housing opposite the orifice 11, and, substantially in the axis of said orifice, is a guide rod 12.
A bolt shank 13 is mounted gently on the guide rod 12 and has a portion protruding through the orifice 11. One piece. transverse 14 is part of the tail of the bolt 13
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and is disposed inside the housing 5. A bolt 15 / screwed onto the part of the bolt shank 13 which projects outwardly through the hole 11 of the housing 5, surrounding the rod 12 and disposed between the housing 5 and the cross piece 14 is a spring 16 for pushing the bolt shank out of the housing. The bolt shank is guided by the rod 12 and the hole 11.
A member 17 for returning the bolt can rotate in each of the hollow sleeves 9 serving as a bearing; this member 17 comprises on its internal face a transverse part bearing against a cam 18. An axis 19 is connected to each of the members 17 and projects outwardly from this member ,, At each axis is fixed a button 20. The rotation of one of the buttons causes the rotation of its axis, and that of the member 17 of which it is integral, member which, in turn, by means of its cam 18, causes the movement of the transverse part to the right if we look at figure 3, which results in the withdrawal of the bolt 15 inside the groove 4.
A plate 21 is provided on the edge of the door to guide the bolt.
Identical guides 22 carrying the latch members, intended to block the bolt, are arranged in substantially diametrically opposed parts of the housing 5. Each of the guides 22 comprises a folded metal strip having its ends turned inward and adapted to support and to guide the latch-forming member 23 (see FIG. 4.) This member 23 comprises a main part which is substantially flat and rectangular but in which has been stamped a lug 24 directed downwards. Screwed to one end of the latch member 23 is located
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
EMI6.1
a button or q @ õ16née 25 adapts pgdr allow manual movement of the latch member, in a,
general direction transverse to the housing 5. The transverse piece 14 is provided at the top and bottom with similar slots 26; each of them corresponds to a position of the latch member 23, disposed on the neighboring guide 22, to receive the ergot
24.
In this position the latch 23 has no action on the lock mechanism, which is free to move forward and backward, moving the bolt forward or backward. However, by a transverse movement of the latch 23, the lug 24 is moved out of the line of the slot 26, and presses against the transverse part 14 on the face opposite the cam
18, whereby the cross piece is positively trapped between the lug 24 and the cam 18.
The bolt is thus blocked, as shown in fig 3,
Attached to the top of the latch member
23, is a spring 27, having a trigger 23 projecting upwards, and adapted to engage as desired in one of the two slots 29 made in the guide 22, whereby the latch 23 is held, by sudden jumps and securely, either in the desired position to block the lock, or in the position for which the lock mechanism is released A small part 30, the purpose of which will be indicated later, is attached to the end of the 'latch member 23, opposite the button 25,
Arranged on each side of the door, and covering the edges of the hole 3, are fixed fixing plates 31 traversed, like the box 5,,
by screws (not shown in the drawing) intended: - to hold the housing in an adjustable manner
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
inside the hole.
A rosette 32 covers the entire lock, on each side of the door; is held in place by a nut 33 screwed onto the boss 9.
The knob 25 is screwed onto the latch member 23 so that it can be adjusted when the lock is mounted on the door. The cross section of the button is not circular and the corresponding rosette 32 is provided with a non-circular opening of corresponding shape, through which the button can pass so as to allow a back and forth movement of the button and latch, while preventing rotation of the button and consequently its unscrewing from the latch.
, The rosette 32, opposite the latch, is provided with a smaller opening through which passes the operating member 30, this member and this opening not being circular, but of corresponding shape, as we have already seen. described with regard to the button 25 and its opening in the rosette. When the bolt is locked, the latch 23- is in the right-hand position when looking at figure 2 so that almost all of the actuator 30 is drawn inside the left rosette 32.
The member 30 is provided, near its outer end, with a groove 34 which, when the member 23 is blocked, barely exceeds the rosette 32. It is possible, by using one's fingernails or an instrument suitable, grasp the member 30 by means of the groove 34 and make it come out, that is to say draw it to the left, if we look at figure 2, whereby we can move the latch towards the left and thus unlock the bolt,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Consequently, the operation of the lock is provided in principle from the inside of the door only, but the member 30 is provided outside the door, a member relatively small and not very visible and relatively difficult to operate. , but thanks to which the door can be opened from the outside if necessary.
The latch or slide member can be easily maneuvered perpendicular to the lock mechanism, a slight movement of this member being only necessary to bring the lug 24 opposite or not the slot 26.
It is practically impossible for a person outside to inadvertently or unknowingly open the bolt, and thus to accidentally disturb a person inside.
Of course it is always desirable to have the lock mechanism above rather than below the handle. If arrangements were made to introduce the lock mechanism only on one side of the housing 5, the latch mechanism would only be used for doors which open from one side only, because if one tries to apply it to doors which open from the opposite side, the lock mechanism would be below the button and therefore difficult to access.
In order to avoid this drawback, a means has been provided to insert the lock on one side or the other of the housing 5, at will, thus making the mechanism of the lock usable, for doors suspended from one side. side or 1.'other-,
If the lock is to be placed on a door, turning on the opposite side to that shown in the drawing, the case will be turned over and the guide '
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
22 originally to the lower part of the housing will in this case come to the upper part and replace the used guide shown in the drawing =.
For this purpose the transverse piece 14 will have a slot
26 at each end, and the respective guides 22 will be provided with slots 29 in the desired positions to cooperate with the detent 28 of the spring 27.
Each of the closures 6 and 7 has suitable openings, arranged at opposite points, to receive the latch mechanism. The cover plate 35 is mounted on one of the screws 10 after the latch mechanism has been inserted into the guide 22, to close the opening of the housing, and also serves as a stopper to limit movement of the latch member. . When the latch member 23 is in the closed position, that is to say to the right looking at FIG. 2, its surface 36 (see FIG. 4) abuts against the inside of the plate 35, thus preventing the latch organ from having too much outward movement.
When the latch member is on the left, looking at figure 2, in which the bolt is not locked, the surface 37 of the latch member (see figure 4) abuts against the inner part of the member closure 6 thus limiting the movement of the latch to the left.
Although only one closure plate 35 is in fact used, it is customary in mounting the mechanism to place two of these plates inside, each mounted on a screw 10, so that it is easily accessible regardless of the position in which the lock mechanism is inserted in the door.
In Figures 5 and 6 we have shown a
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
another embodiment of the invention, in which embodiment the actuator 30, of the latch member 23, is replaced by a flat protrusion 38, having an opening 39. The length of the protrusion 38 is considerably less than the length of member 30 of the embodiment of Figure 1 to 4 inclusive, such that the protrusion 38 does not extend beyond the left rosette 32 (see Figure 5) but is still inside of this rosette.
To maneuver the latch if necessary, this
EMI10.1
method of providing the rqse, head with a slot / a hook-shaped lisati, can be 40 through which introduced to catch the opening 39 of 1 projection 38, making it possible to operate the latch,
The ole 41 can be kept on a plate fixed in advance near the outside of the door so; that if necessary, it can be easily grabbed to unlock the door and thus enter the room.
Although an embodiment has been shown and described, which is currently considered to be the best, it is obvious that said invention is not limited by this fact, but can be carried out in a different way without carrying achieves the spirit of the present invention.
