"Mixed cross (Invention of Mr. VEINBERG)"
Reinforced cement railway sleepers generally have two "blocks" on which the rails rest, these soles being joined by a spacer, also made of reinforced cement or entirely metallic, which is embedded in the concrete of the soles.
This device does not withstand the forces that it has to cut due to the deformations of the platform and the concrete cracks and disintegrates quite quickly at the points of embedding of the spacer with the

blocks as a result of the relative movements occurring between the iron and the concrete *
The present invention due to research,
de Monsieur Veinberg's object is a cross member comprising two reinforced cement blocks and an entirely metallic spacer. This spacer, which is not embedded in the blocks, ends with two soles in place. rail saddles, which rest on the pegs and are attached to the rails and pegs by lag screws.
This prevents any cracking of the. concrete and distributing the load over a larger area; the cross member is more easily removable and transportable in three parts and its length can be adjusted on demand.
The soles can be slightly curved so as to give the tightening a certain elasticity which helps to maintain this tightening.
The appended drawing represents by way of example an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the sleeper.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig 3 is a cross section thereof.
The concrete blocks 1 are executed in the ordinary manner and preferably have a projection 2 which forms a pan and opposes the movements of the spacer 3 in the direction. transverse to the track.
This spacer has a middle part

4, of T-section for example, terminated by two very wide flanges 5 which extend the wings of the T.
These flanges taking the place of rail saddles are drilled with 6 holes for the passage of the lag bolts and are notched for the housing of the railo.
The extremities ? of the soul of the T are engaged in grooves made in the blocks and the wings of this T rest in a housing provided in the concrete.
It will of course be possible, instead of a T section as shown, to have a spacer with any section, for example U or double T; in this case the lower wings will rest on the ballast which will increase the stability of the assembly
These spacers can be made of steel or other metal, stamped die casting or obtained in any other suitable manner.
For the installation of the sleepers thus formed, we will first put in place the pegs then the spacers and these will be permanently fixed by the lag screws when the rails are laid.
To take account of the differences in rail spacing, particularly in curves, spacers of different lengths can be used with blocks of a single model; it will thus be possible to use cross members whose holes 6 of the flanges 5 will be oval.
It is quite certain that this example of reali-
