<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Mechanical device performing circular oscillations.
The arrangement of a mass performing an oscillatory movement between two elastic media is particularly advantageous when, in the oscillatory state, the kinetic energy m Vo2 of mass 2 is periodically formed into potential energy Po2 / 2c in elastic media. But this energy accumulated in the oscillating body is always a multiple of the energy supplied and can by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
example, depending on the damping of the oscillating system, be 10 times to 20 times greater than the said energy supplied, so that the forces which develop inside the system, consisting of a mass and elastic organs or means, achieve high values as a result.
It is because of this fact that one is obliged, to produce the excitation of such systems, to use what is called a loose coupling, that is to say means which do not provide the oscillating system a quantity of energy equal to that consumed in operation, and thus transmit to each oscillation only a fraction of the oscillation energy m âêtex-
EMI2.1
the energy citoscillation m a Vo 2 or P 0 c 2 and thus determine the oscillating body not to take its maximum amplitude of oscillation until after several periods.
If one uses, on the other hand, to excite an oscillating body a rigid coupling, during the first 2 stroke, the total energy 2 or Po2 / 2c, must naturally be transmitted, which requires, as one understands it , the use of a much stronger drive motor, that is to say of a motor which has exaggerated dimensions for normal operation.
The present invention is based on this observation that there exists in a large field of the art oscillatory movements, for which the state of things described above has a quite general value, a movement process which admits two different solutions, namely the process called "circular oscillation". Circular oscillation is a periodic movement in which all the material points of the oscillating mass describe circles of equal or approximately equal radii.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This movement takes place, for example, when - a mass M (figure 1) fixed to the end of an elastic rod E, embedded at one of its ends, is excited by two loose couplings K1 and K2 acting at an angle right from each other.
The couplings K1, K are actuated by the cranks 1 and 2, and the connecting rods 3,4 with a phase shift of 90.
The same effect is obtained if we use a system constituted (figure 2) by a mass M and an elastic member E, and if we excite it by means of a rotating disc 1, which makes the coupling perform releases K and also to the mass M circular movements, without them being able to turn on themselves, as a result of the embedding of the end of the elastic member E.
While the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, in which the loose coupling is used, is well known and absolutely essential for many cases, for example if a steering effect is to be obtained. , the new embodiment which is the subject of the present invention is based, in accordance with the observation mentioned above, on the fact that the elastic members are subjected to a prior static tension.
In other words, the mass oscillating on a circular path is first deviated from its median position by the value of the radius of the circle; consequently the elastic members undergo a preliminary tension of Po, acting as a directing force, and consequently accumulate, from their bending, a potential energy of Po f or P o 2 According to the observation which has been made
2 2c by the Applicant, this energy remains acquired by the system, also
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
well during the period of setting in oscillation that during normal operation, whatever the number of revolutions or oscillations used and this in such a way that, when the number of oscillations increases,
the centrifugal force of the mass which also increases tends to replace the previous tensile force transmitted by the cranks, finally completely replaces this force and causes, on the cranks, for a further increase in the number of oscillations, a reaction of contrary signs.
Extensive research has shown that it is very important that we can establish, in a continuous way and from a zero number of oscillations, this operating phase, without having to overcome large resistances of transmission, that is, in a similar way to what happens with the loose coupling, only the energy used and consumed by damping and losses is supplied; in this way, the invention can be put into practice with great advantage.
Figures 3 to 5 of the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, show an embodiment of the invention. M1 and M2 denote the oscillating masses which form, for example, the sieves of a carbon screen. These masses are articulated in the known manner, with four pendant supports 3, 3 ......, each of which is provided with an annular disc 4 held in its median position by the rubber rings 5. These rings or elastic members thus act as guiding forces, opposing elastic resistance to each deviation from the middle position. In the middle of the supporting frame 6 are the fixed bearings 7, 7 in which the shaft 8 is rotated by a pulley 11, or by any other known means.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
At the ends of this shaft are mounted cranks 9 which carry in their extensions to 180 the respective masses m1 or m2. The radius R1 counted from the center of gravity of the mass m is at the radius r of the handle.
1 velle, as the mass M1 is at m1; the same arrangement goes for the second motor side, west to say that also
EMI5.1
Naturally, the elastic means 5-5 forming directing forces act in such a way on the crank pivots 10 that when the motor mechanism is disconnected, said pivots have a common central axis.
On the other hand, when connecting the motor mechanism,
the crank pivots 10 are deviated from the radius r from the median plane and the elastic means 5 are consequently subjected to a static preliminary tension corresponding to the full value of the amplitude, that is to say that the energy potential Po2 / 2c is accumulated in said
2nd elastic means On the other hand, the torque, turning to the right, formed by the oscillating masses M1 and M2 and represented by the arrows in figure 3, is completely compensated by a torque turning to the left m and m2, if by reducing these -1-2 two couples at a common distance from their point of application, the following condition is satisfied:
-
EMI5.2
ml Rl = Ml rl or ma Ra = Ma r2 that is to say that the machine is completely balanced statically and dynamically for any number of revolutions. The machine is controlled by pulley 11 or any another known way.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Figure 5 shows a combined device based on the same principle and which differs from that described in that only one of the two halves of the screen, namely: of the screen in this case the mass M1 / is actuated by the shaft 8 itself driven by the pulley 11, while the shaft 12 and the mass m2 are driven with a phase shift of 1800 using the crank pin 13 by the mass M2 for dynamic balancing and the preliminary tension.
Nothing is changed in the spirit of the invention if we remove the upper part or the lower part of the screen, and for example the masses M2 and m2 as well as the lower parts of the pendular supports, because each of the halves of the screen shown in the drawing is self-sufficient in terms of dynamic balancing and control.
Further, the resilient means may also be used in any other device known per se, or consist in any other suitable resilient manner, other than rubber, and for example of resilient metals, such as tombak, steel, etc ...
Another example of execution is shown in Figures 6 and 7. Contrary to what takes place in the arrangement shown in Figures 3 to 5, in which the circular oscillations are performed horizontally, the circular oscillations of the device of Figures 6 and 7, are carried out vertically. M designates a screen box which is fitted with two 1-2 screens and is mounted on the shafts
4 by four bearings 3, 3 provided with an elastic rubber filling. The rubber rings which exhibit the same elasticity in all directions allow the mass M to perform circular oscillations around
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the axis passing through its center of gravity and that in vertical planes.
The control shaft 5 passes between the screens 1-2 through the center of gravity of the screen box and this shaft is provided with two eccentrics. The ends of this shaft pivot axially in the supports 6 while the two eccentrics are mounted at the center of gravity of the screen.
The shafts 4-4 of the screen are fixed to two common forks 7, themselves secured to the support 6. In this way, when the eccentric shaft 5 is rotated, each point of the screen box M describes a arc of a circle corresponding to the eccentricity. But also in the rest position, the screen is biased out of its mean position due to the eccentricity of the shaft 5, and the resilient bearings are consequently subjected to a prior static tension. The two balancing masses 8, 8 which are offset by 180 with respect to the eccentricity of the shaft 5, are used for dynamic balancing. In this case, the assumed mass 2m, at the center of gravity of the balancing mass,
is at M as the radius of eccentricity r is at the vector radius R of the center of gravity of the balancing mass The shaft 5 passing through the center of gravity of the screen box is, inside the said box M , enclosed in a tube 9 connected in a sealed manner with the two bearings and these are closed inside the sieve box so as to be protected against dust.
Nothing changes in the spirit of the invention, if instead of a rotating balancing mass, an oscillating mass with a phase shift of 180 is used in a manner known per se. Also, the well-known observation that during dissymmetric excitation of the systems described, elliptical oscillations occur which do not modify the principle of the invention. This
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
which is important for the smooth running of the oscillation process is that the points of elastic suspension of the screen are in a plane passing through the center of gravity of the latter and that the shaft serving to the excitation is found as much as possible in the direct vicinity of the axis passing through the center of gravity, or coincides with said axis.
In the present case this condition is realized in Figures 3, 4 and 5, due to the fact that the control shaft and the suspension points are mounted at the periphery of the two screens.
In figures 6 and 7 the support shafts as well as the control shafts, pass through the screen box and the first pass through it - in sealed conditions achieved by rubber bearings, while the control shaft participating in the movement of the screen box does not require any special sealing device; it is only separated in a sealed manner from the inside of the box by a special tube 9 in order to protect it against dust and other dirt.
FIGS. 8 and 9 show an embodiment in which the oscillating mass is executed in the form of a mechanical energy transmission member and in this case in the form of a toothed wheel 5, which is supported on a second toothed wheel 6.
As on the one hand the toothed wheel 5 does not perform any rotational movement and on the other hand has a pitch circle radius smaller than the toothed wheel 6, at each circular oscillation of the toothed wheel 5, said wheel 6 must advance by the difference of the radii pitch circles in the direction of the direction of the oscillations. The device shown thus constitutes a transmission mechanism of constant and relatively large value.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
As in these mechanisms, in contrast to what takes place in helical gear mechanisms, which have the same properties from the point of view of transmission, there is no sliding movement but only rolling, the Transmission mechanisms or similar to that of Figures 8 and 9 do not give rise to any intrinsic braking, even for a relatively large ratio transmission, and are thus reversible. The toothed wheel 6 can also be used as a driving member, and the toothed wheel 5 as a driven organ.
The rubber rings 7, 7 serve simultaneously to receive / see the potential energy; these rings prevent the driving toothed wheel from participating in the rotation, but nevertheless allow a small phase difference between the two toothed wheels. Also to avoid this phase difference, the drive wheel can be articulated at a fixed point by means of a universal joint, so that this wheel can oscillate well, but not however rotate.
In this case, a single, centered rubber ring is sufficient to receive the potential energy. Nothing yet changes to the spirit of the invention if the elastic member is given an asymmetrical preliminary tension to obtain a particular effect.
