<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
sant.

In the drawings, 1 designates a part of a boot of the differential of a motor vehicle, and 2 the rear drive shaft, the sections 3 and 4 of which come into holes 5 and 6. These sections are connected to the mechanism. differential. This differential mechanism is placed in the boot 8, one end of which is provided with a journal 9 which rotates in a roller bearing assembly 10 supported by the cross member 11 in the box 1, the said roller bearing being adjustable by means of the plug. threaded 12. Section 4 of the shaft passes through this journal.
The other end of the box 8 is provided with a tubular projection 13, the end end of which is provided with a collar 14 having an annular rim 15 carried by said collar, and which carries, bolted to its inner wall, an oone gear 16. The collar 14 is supported in a roller bearing assembly

17, said assembly, like assembly 10, being adjustable in the event of wear. Via a threaded plug 18 screwed into the cross member 19. The section 3 of the shaft extends through the projection 13 which is wedged in 20 to the collar 14.
A cone gear 28 is bolted to truss 8 and is larger in diameter than gear 16, so that a speed change can be effected.
To rotate the gears 16 and 28, as desired, a control element 29 is provided, consisting of an axis 30 and an axis 31, these axes being provided between their ends with toothed bosses 32 and 33 respectively. The ends of these pins are kept apart and connected by a connector 34, the ends of which are provided with cells 38, in which the ends of the pins are placed. Set screws 36 are provided to hold the ends of the pins in said cells. The control element 29 is, in this case, placed obliquely with respect to the axis 3 and the connector is provided with an annular central groove 37 to accommodate the projection 13 so that the apparatus can be assembled. in a compact way.
The axle 31 carries the hub 37 'of the epicyclic gear 38 which meshes with the gear 16, the said means having a clutch ring 39 which slides on the said hub and is provided with grooves 40 to engage in. sliding with the ribs 41 of the hub. The other end of the axle 31 rotates in a roller bearing assembly 42 mounted in the threaded plug 43 placed in the holder 44. The end of the axle 30 rotates in a roller bearing assembly 45 mounted in the plug. threaded 46, said plug being adjustable in support 47.
A gear 48 is freely mounted on the axis 30 and meshed with the gear 28; the hub 48 'is provided with a clutch ring 49 which slides on it. This clutch ring is provided with 50 grooves in order to be able to engage with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ribs 51 of said hub. The rings 39 and 49 are provided with annular grooves 52 and 53 in which the displacement forks 54 and 55 respectively take. The axle 30 has its outer end connected to a universal coupling 56 which connects said axle with the control shaft of the vehicle engine so that a rotary movement can be transmitted to the control element 29.
To move the rings 39 and 49, so that one of the gears 38 or 48 rotates the cone gears, a pair of sliding rods 57 and 58 is provided, mounted in the block 59 fixed on the boot 1 and placed above. control element 29.
The rod 57 is connected at its end to the fork 54 and the fork 55 is connected to the end of the rod 58. These rods are provided with cavities 59 and 60 which are placed opposite the inclined grooves 61 when the device is at neutral point. The lower end of the displacement arm 62 takes in said groove. This arm pivots on the axis 63 sliding in the head 64 of the boot 1. The displacement arm cannot slide on the axis 63, but it can pivot on the latter.
One end of the pin 63 is provided with a cross member 65 provided at its two ends with journals 66 designed to engage in the spiral groove 66 'formed in the sleeve 67, said sleeve being rotatably mounted in the cavity 68. The sleeve 67 is provided with a rod 69 designed to be able to turn in order to give a rotary movement to said sleeve for slack - see axis 63 longitudinally. This rod is connected by a universal coupling 70 to a control rod 71 which can be turned manually by the driver.
As shown in fig.3, the arm 62 engages in the cavity 60 so that the ring 49 engages with the hub 48 'thanks to the presence of teeth on the boss 33 and ribs 51.
When we want to change the speed, we turn the manohon
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
67, and the arm 69 will slide the rod 58 to the left, so that said arm passes through the groove 61 and enters the cavity 60. During this movement, the ring 49 disengages from the boss 33 and slides. on the hub 48 'allowing the gear 48 to rotate freely. By continuing the rotation of the sleeve 67, the arm will disengage from the cavity 60 and pass through the groove 61 and enter the cavity 59 of the rod 57.
The rod 57 is then slid to the left so that the fork 54 slides the ring 39 in order to engage it with the boss so that the gear 38 rotates the gear 16. It is possible to rotate this way. either the 16 or 28 gears.
A slightly modified form of the invention is shown in Figures 7 to 11 inclusive of the drawings. In this form. the differential boot is designated 72 and it encloses the differential mechanism 73 which is itself enclosed in a boot 74. The latter has a cone gear 75 attached to one of its ends. The boot 74 is provided with a projection 76 on which the cone gear 77 is mounted. The part 78 of the axis passes through this projection. A control pin 79 is placed at right angles to the projection 76 and carries the gear 80 intended to mesh with the gear 77, said pin being actuated by the motor shaft as in the other form. of the invention. A gear 81 can slide on the axis 78 so that it can leave the gear 75.
The gear 81 is in combination with a fork 82 while the gear 77 is combined with the fork 83. The fork 82 is fixed to a sliding rod 84 while the fork 83 is held by a sliding rod 86. The rods 84 and 85 are placed at right angles and are in combination with a control bar 86 which can be put in any desirable position. It is obvious that by rotating this bar, the rods 84 and 85 will receive a grout movement -
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
health. The bar 86 has one end attached by a ball joint to the rod 84 via the rod 87 and its other end connected in a similar fashion to the rod 85 by the rod 88.
As shown in Fig. 7, gear 77 meshes with gear 80 and when it is desired to change the speed, bar 86 is rotated in one direction to slide rod 85 such that fork 83 slides the gear. gear 77 out of engagement with gear 80. As gear 77 exits gear 80, rod 84 will be slid in the desired direction to mesh gear 81 with gear 75.
The gears of your choice can thus be used in a simple and practical manner.
Balls 89 and 90 placed under the action of a spring cooperate with the cells 91-91 and 92-92 of the respective rods 57 and 58 to maintain the latter in the neutral position.
Ball bearings can be placed between the forks 82 and 83 and the gears 81 and 77 and arrangements can be provided to keep the rods 84 and 85 in the positions where they were put, in order to maintain the gear. swimming 77 in mesh with gear 80 or gear 81 with gear 75.
