Figure 4 est un plan de paquetage et
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Package of cigarettes.
This invention relates to a pack of cigarettes, in which the cigarettes are surrounded by sheaths. These sheaths follow one another so that they can be unwound and separated from one another.
According to the invention, the packaging is made so that the cigarettes parallel or substantially parallel to each other are covered on each side by continuous bands meeting between any two consecutive cigarettes and having a width such that their edges can also be joined at the ends cigarettes, so that neither air nor dust can enter.
The drawing represents some embodiments of the invention,
Figures 1 and 2 are longitudinal sections of two different embodiments of the package.
, Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of a variant, on a larger scale.
Figure 4 is a package plan and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Figure 5 is a cross section.
The parallel or substantially parallel c cigarettes are covered on each side by the continuous bands a and b of any length. These bands a and b are united between consecutive cigarettes. This meeting, which takes place at the points designated by 1, can be obtained by gluing, stapling or by any other means. To make it possible to detach any number of cigarettes thus sheathed, the bands a and b are perforated or opened in a known manner at the meeting points d. In Figures l to 4 the perforation made at this location is designated by i. On either side of the ends of the cigarettes c the width of the bands a and b is greater than the length of the cigarette. The bands a and b protrude, therefore on each side, as can be seen in figures 4 and 5.
This makes it possible to enclose each cigarette individually.
The edges e which protrude from each side can be joined by gluing, stapling or by any other means.
The bands a, b can be formed by single or multiple layers. In FIG. 3 for example, the lower part consists of two layers b. The two bands a, can also be in one piece, i.e. make squares on one side as can be seen at the top of the figure After having introduced the cigarettes in this common band a, b we fold this one- ci on itself and the two lower edges are joined c.
In order to hermetically seal the two ends of the cigarettes and prevent the tobacco from falling, it is possible to introduce into the sleeve, as shown in FIG. 5, at each end of the cigarette, a garnish ±; in soft material, hermetically closing. This filling can be, for example, of wadding; very thin wood pulp reminiscent of paper or similar material.
To facilitate the opening of each surrounding cheerful
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
hermetically the cigarette, when it has been separated from the package, a tear-off device can be used to open each individual sleeve quickly and without damaging the cigarette. To this end, it is possible, for example, to introduce in the interval between the sheath and the cigarette, a tear-off thread f, protruding a little from one side or both (Figures 3 and 4).
The finished pack can be given a definite shape by folding it up or rolling it up on itself. Any number of cigarettes can be separated from the pack without allowing air to reach any of the undetached cigarettes, which could dry out the tobacco and dispel the aromatic essences. The simplicity of the package means that its use is still effectively economical for inexpensive cigarettes.
If desired, two or three or more tapes can also be used instead of one for packing.
The bands which surround the cigarettes are preferably made of thin paper or transparent wood pulp reminiscent of paper, or of metal foil, for example aluminum foil. When using transparent tapes, there is the advantage that the buyer can see the packaged goods.
The packaging has the further advantage that a minimum of material is sufficient for the packaging and that the side-by-side ducts can be machine made quickly and easily. The use of strips wider than cigarettes allows them to be wrapped after their introduction into the sheaths so as to let neither air nor dust enter without having to use special closing devices; all that is required is to bring together the protruding edges of the ducts by gluing, stitching, or stapling, folding, etc. This operation can be done at the same time as the stacking on the machine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to pack which unites the bands between the different cigarettes.
In the packages hitherto known and consisting of sheaths containing the cigarettes, the individual cigarettes are not wrapped on all sides to protect them from air and dust. In addition, the manufacture of the packages known products consisting of several parts is far too expensive.
