<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS TO JOINTS FOR SINGLE END PIPES.
It is well known to make joints between pipes made of concrete or other materials having single ends, by means of a clamp surrounding the ends of the pipe and packing rings of rubber or the like, with a ring between each pipe and the clamp. *
It is also well known to employ rings of circular cross section and to set them in place and in sealing engagement with the pipe and the clamp by placing them over the pipe and sliding the clamp over them and over the pipe. so that the rings successively enter an open end of the collar and roll between the collar and the pipe to their final positions,
being at the same time compressed laterally between the collar and the pipe to make a tight seal *
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the invention is to enable the use of a collar having both ends contracted such that the stuffing rings cannot pass through these ends and therefore cannot be blown out.
According to the present invention, one of the stuffing rings has a round section as described above. This ring is brought into the cavity of the collar at a part of said cavity where it is large enough to admit the ring between the collar and the pipe without compressing the ring appreciably; and the ring is rolled into its final position and compressed by sliding the collar on the pipe.
The tamping ring is such that when in place in the collar it can slide freely over the pipe without sticking to it. Its tight closing is independent of the sliding movement and is produced by the pressure of the fluid.
For example, it may be a cup packing retained in a depression made in the collar and having its lips in respective engagement with the wall of said depression and the surface of the pipe. It can be subjected to the closing pressure by the fluid in the pipes entering the collar cavity through the space between the ends of the pipes or by means of a plastic material injected under pressure into the collar cavity after the collar and packing rings have been put in place *
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a joint, and Figure 2 shows the method of making this joint.
In the drawings, 2 and 3 show the pipes to be assembled and 4 is a collar encircling the ends of the pipes. The pipe 2 is sealed to the collar by means of a rubber ring 5, the original section of which was circular and which is compressed between the collar and said pipe.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Hose 3 is sealed to the collar by the U-ring packing.
The collar is formed of a hollow 7 of a diameter such that it contains the ring 5 when said ring is placed around the pipe 2, without substantially compressing said ring.
The side 8 of said hollow is square with the axis of the collar so that the ring is pushed along the pipe without rolling. The other side 9 of the trough has its diameter gradually reduced to a trough 10 of such a small diameter that within it the ring 5 is laterally compressed sufficiently to form a fluid-tight seal between the ring. pipe 2 and the clamp.
At the other end of the collar is a recess 11 for the U-shaped stuffing ring 6. The two mouths 12 of the collar are contracted so that the rings 5 and 6 cannot be forced out by the pressure of the fluid. in the pipes. Sufficient freedom of movement is, however, allowed between the collar and the pipes for the degree of flexibility which is desirable to allow ordinary irregular placement of the pipes in a pipeline.
When making the seal, the rings 5 and 6 are inserted into their respective hollows in the collar, and the collar is slipped on the pipe 2 as shown in figure 2. During this movement the ring 5 slides on the pipe and remains in its hollow 7.
If the joint is to be filled with bitumen, it is desirable at this stage to tie tape 13 around the ends of the pipe to prevent bitumen from being injected into the pipes.
The collar is now slid to the right to bring it into the assembly position of figure 1. During this movement the ring 5 rolls along the inclined wall 9 into the recess 8, where it takes its position. final and is compressed to seal pipe 2 with the clamp. 6 U-shaped stuffing
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
is brought into position around the pipe 3 ready to make a fluid tight seal therewith when subjected to the pressure of the fluid.
The tightness of the joint can be further ensured, without reducing its flexibility, by filling the cavity of the joint between the rings 5 and 6, with bitumen or other plastic sealing substance.
If desired, an opening 14 can be provided in the collar, into which the plastic substance is injected; the opening then being blocked to retain the substance.
If the substance is injected under appreciable pressure, it forces the lips of the U-shaped packing into tight contact with the collar and the pipe 3, thus ensuring that said ring is fluid tight when the pressure of the fluid. in the pipe is low. The seal is made all the more perfect as the plastic substance is subjected to a higher pressure of the fluid in the pipes *
Bitumen can be inserted between the mouths 12 of the collar outside the rings 5 and ¯6, in order to protect the said rings from deterioration due to external influences.
