<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Protective system for drivers of motor vehicles or others.
It has already been proposed, in order to protect vehicle drivers against the sun's rays, the reverberation of the roads, or even the glare produced by the headlights of a vehicle coming in the opposite direction, to use screens capable of absorbing or to intercept part of the harmful radiations. This is how tinted screens were created which are fixed, under fixed or variable inclination, so as to extend the roof; screens were also used to mount on the windshield in front of the driver's eyes.
However, these screens have this drawback that they have, at most, only two degrees of freedom, corresponding to their angular displacement around a horizontal axis and to the displacements of said axis, parallel to itself, in a vertical plane.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a protective screen system, which has three degrees of freedom, so that it can occupy any position in space and relative to the driver's head. As a result, this screen can just as easily be placed in front of the visual beam of the latter, under any inclination and at any suitable height, as laterally.
The invention therefore relates to a screen which, using a universal articulation system, resting under the roof of the vehicle, above the driver's head, can occupy any position with respect to it. this.
In the accompanying drawings and by way of example:
FIG. 1 shows a mode of establishment of the articulated universal support allowing the production of the protective system, object of the present invention.
FIG. 2 relates to another variant.
Figures 3 and 4 show in vertical section, the assembly of the ball joints.
FIG. 5 is a vertical section of the support of the apparatus.
As can be seen in the embodiment shown, by way of example in FIG. the orientable protective screen which is the object of the present invention can be suspended by an articulated system constituted as follows:
A base 1 is fixed, by means of screws 2 for example, to the ceiling of a motor car or other vehicle.
The projecting part of the base 1 constitutes a threaded casing 3, divided into a certain number of sectors by radial slots 4, 5.
These sectors are liable to tighten together, under the inaction of a threaded ring 6 screwed together.

on the thread of the housing 3.
As a result, the angle at the top of the conical bowl formed internally by this casing 3 is modified.
This cup receives a cone 7, which carries, by means of screw-axis 8, a rotating bush 9, projecting below the base 1.
This sleeve receives a sliding rule 10 capable of being immobilized by a screw 11 housed and resting in a boss 12 belonging to the sleeve 9.
The rule 10 carries, at one of its ends, and by means of a ball joint 13, an extensible arm 14, with telescopic elements.
The slide 15, which constitutes one of its elements, is provided with a stop screw button 16 and carrying at its free end 17 a yoke. This yoke receives an axis, integral with a ball 18, this ball 18 belonging to the frame 19 in which is arranged a screen 20.
The screen 20 can be opaque or transparent at will, colored or not, metallic, shiny or matt, depending on the particular use for which it is intended. It can in some cases be replaced by a lens or a mirror.
The instructions for use of this device are very simple: the two ball joints 13 and 18 allow you to orientate freely in all directions, the frame 19 while the slide of the rule 10 and the extensibility of the arm 14 allow it to move both horizontally and vertically relative to the support securing the device to the roof of the vehicle.
The whole of the device can also be moved around the vertical axis of the cone 7 and of the support box 4; the adjustment of the position of the ring 6 making it possible to modify, at will, the friction force which immobilizes the screen 20 in the chosen position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the other embodiment, a base 1 is fixed by means of side legs and screws to the ceiling of a motor car or other vehicle.
This base 1 has a central journal 21, extending by a threaded portion 22 and comprising a hole whose axis is perpendicular to that of said journal 21. On the threaded portion 22 are mounted two concentric cups 23-24. These cups 23-24 also have openings which correspond to the hole in the journal 21 and through which the horizontal tube 10 passes.
These cups 23-24 block the tube 10 in position by shearing effect and give rise, by the Belleville washer 25, to sufficient friction to hold the system in place while leaving it the latitude to rotate around the journal 21, These two operations are carried out simultaneously by tightening a knurled nut 26 on the threaded part 22 of the journal 21.
The tube 10 carries, at one of its ends, and by means of a ball joint 27, an extendable arm 14 with telescopic elements.
The internal element of this arm 14 is provided with a stop screw button 16 and carries, at its end, a ball 28; this ball 28 belongs to the frame 19 in which a screen 20 is metered.
The instructions for use of this device are very simple: the "two ball joints 27 and 28 make it possible to orient, at will in all directions, the frame 1 9 while the sliding of the tube 10 and the extensibility of the arms 14 allow it to move both horizontally and ------------ ------ --vertical, rela-

tally to the support securing the device to the vehicle roof.
The whole of the device can also be moved angularly around the journal 21, the device always remaining in position by the friction given by the Belleville washer 25.
It will be noted, from a purely constructive point of view, that the ball joint 27 is provided with a shank 29 which engages and pins in the horizontal tube 10. In the outer tube of the telescopic arm 14 and at one of its ends - A threaded rod 30 is fixed allowing the mounting of the cup 27 'receiving the ball 270 This cup 27' has an added cap 31 acting on a spring 32 which applies a friction shoe 33 on the ball 27. A similar arrangement is provided for the bowl 28 'receiving the ball 28, but the insert 34 is formed by the internal rod of the telescopic arm 14. The ball 28 comprises a threaded shank 35 into which the extension of the part 36 is screwed, secured to the frame 19 of the screen 20. This part 36 may be provided with a fin forming a thumb 37.
