Be it known that I, JOHN S. ADI-EMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pomona, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Headlight Mountings and Constructions; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the char acters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of headlights for motor vehicles, and the mounting of same on the vehicle.
The object of the present invention is to provide a form of n'iounting so constructed that universal adjustment of the headlight may be very easily and quickly accomplished, so that said headlights may be adjusted up or down and swing sideways or longitudinally thereby providing for a very wide range of possible locations of the areas illuminated by the lights, relative to the vehicle.
The above and other objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as ill fully appear by a perusal of the following specification turd claims.

Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional and end views respectively of the ball.-and-socket adjustment member used in the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawin 's the numeral 1 designates a supporting post for the lamp. On the post 1 I mount a short sleeve onto which is screwed, intermediate its ends, a plate member 31 having at one end a downturned ear or lug 32 which is fixed in connection with a clamping device 33 about Serial No. 663,752.

On the opposite end of the plate from the ear 32 is a semispherical socket 341:, an adjustable and similarly socketed clamping-cap 35 being mounted on the plate above the socket 3s, and'held by adjustable bolts 35. In these two sockets tits a ball 36 formed on the lower end of a rod or bracket member 37 which e2:- tends outwardly and then upwardly from the ball and is lined on the side of the lamp 28 in the same manner as the bracelrt 27.
It will therefore be seen that I have provided a lamp with a universally ad justable mounting.
By rotating the plate 31 on its threaded connection with the sleeve 30 the lamp may be adjusted in a horizontal plane while the ball and socket arrangement enables the lamp to be tilted in either a transverse or longitudinal plane. Iam thus enabled to direct the rays from the lamp so as to obtain the most advantageous results, as will be evident From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a dev'oe as substantially fulfills the objects of ti invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the presentand preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A headlight mounting including a supporting post, a sleeve mounted for vertical adjustment on the post, a plate member turnably mounted on the sleeve, a downturned ear on the plate, a clamp on the ear adapted to be clamped to the post and support the sleeve and a lamp adjust-ably mounted on the plate.
