"PROCEDE ET APPAREIL POUR LA FABRICATION
D'ORGANES DE COMMANDE DE LA DIRECTION DES
VEHICULES ET PRODUIT EN RESULTANT". formée par Société dite t ROSS GEAR AND TOOL COMPANY
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
Le tourillon b' est de préférence plus long que le tourillon b et comporte à son extrémité extérieure une série périphérique de rainures longitudinales parallèles b' prévues pour Tenir en prise avec une douille rainurée inté- rieurement de façon correspondante d'une pièce de centrage 2a de la poupée remplaçant la pointe de centrage habituel- le ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

"METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE
COMMAND BODIES OF THE DIRECTORATE OF
VEHICLES AND RESULTING PRODUCT ". Formed by Company known as t ROSS GEAR AND TOOL COMPANY
The invention relates to a method and a machine for cutting variable helical grooves in the steering control members of vehicles.
These control members are cylindrical bodies provided with one or more helical grooves, the pitch of each of the grooves varying from the middle to each of the ends. The helical groove of these control members is arranged so as to receive
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
an arm (or a lug carried by the arm) of an oscillating shaft arranged at right angles to this member; it follows that the rotation of this control member on its axis gives a variable oscillation movement to this oscillating shaft; the relative movements of the actuator and of the oscillating shaft varying depending on the point where the arm engages with the groove.
The groove of the control member must be made with great precision and the accompanying drawing shows part of a machine for making these grooves. sufficient to allow a full understanding of the present invention. The following description is made with reference to this drawing on which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a machine for cutting variable helical grooves in steering control members.
FIG. 2 represents the latter in plan seen from above.
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Fig. 4 is a schematic view showing the method of cutting grooves on a control member blank.
FIG. 5 is a detail view of one of the grooved control members.
Figure 6 shows a detail in section taken along line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figures 7 and 8 are diagrams showing different relative positions of the blank and the cutter during cutting.
As is shown, the machine comprises a plate 1 on which the working members are mounted. This plate can be of any construction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
suitable for example that of the plate of an ordinary screw milling machine. On the plate are arranged a fixed headstock 2 and a tailstock 3 which can be mounted on the tray so that they can be adjusted in the usual way, if desired.
The blank in which the control member will be cut is designated in the drawing by B; it is mounted between the center jjf of the tailstock 3 and the center 2a of the fixed headstock 2 in the usual way in which the metal parts are mounted in a screw milling machine.
On the table 1 there is a tool holder 4 which can be slidably mounted in any suitable way and which when in position can be locked in its place in any suitable way. The tool holder 4 is placed between the dolls 2 and 3 and is provided on its opposite sides with ears .4 projecting upwards and drilled so as to receive the shaft 4b. The shaft 4b has a recess 4c in one of the ends of which is fixed a threaded part which engages with the threaded end 4e of an axis 4x which journals in a sleeve 4, fitted in a sleeve mounted in the shaft. outer end of one of the bearings 4a concentric with the shaft 4b.
The inner end of the sleeve 4g is fitted to the neighboring end of the shaft 4b and is preferably wedged thereon as in 4k so that the shaft 4b and the sleeve 4g can turn integrally one of the 'other; the longitudinal play of the sleeve 4g is prevented in any suitable manner; in FIG. 3, a ring 4a has been shown bearing against the outer end of the sleeve and fixed to the ear. by means of screws 4t.
On the axis 4 is fixed a handwheel ± by means of which the threaded end 4e of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the latter so as to adjust the shaft 4 longitudinally on the tool holder The longitudinal play of the axis 4x relative to its support is prevented by means of a collar 4i carried by the axis and which is tightened strongly against the outer end of the sleeve 4g by means of a nut 4? placed on the outer end of the $ axis as seen in Figure 3.
A part 5 carrying the tool is mounted on the shaft 4b between the ears 4a; this part is held on the axis by a 4p pin as seen in figure 3.
The part is provided with two projections 5a and 5b placed above the shaft 4b and which are bored along their axes to receive the sockets 5c and 5d in which is mounted, so as to be able to turn the tool holder 6. The part 5 can be adjusted longitudinally with respect to the support 4 by rotating the handwheel which in turn turns the axis ± * and moves the shaft 4 / and the workpiece 5 longitudinally on the shaft as a whole. As shown, the lug 4a in which the sleeve 4g is mounted is slit longitudinally and can be clamped to the sleeve by means of transverse bolts shown at 47 in Figure 3.
The tool holder jg is shown as fixed in position by means of locking nuts 6c screwed onto the shank of the tool on either side of the projection 5b and suitable washers (which may be ball bearings if desired) are placed between nuts 6c and part 5b, as shown. This assembly makes it possible to maintain the milling cutter in a fixed position, after adjustment, and takes into account the thrust exerted on it at the end. Attached to the inner end of tool holder 6 is a cutter 'C, arranged to cut the groove in the blank as shown below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
On the rear part of the tool holder ±. There is a pinion 6p which meshes with a pinion 6q carried by a pin 6r whose front part pivots in an axial hole made at the rear end of the shaft 4b, as shown. sent in 6s in Figure 3. This shaft 6r carries on its outer end, an angle pinion 6t which meshes with an angle wheel 9a mounted on a shaft 9; at its lower end this shaft carries a wheel 9b, meshing with an angle wheel 9c offset on a shaft 9d extending along the machine and actuated by any suitable means, such as a speed reducer, from the main motor shaft. The toothed wheel 6q is large enough to allow the tool ± to move away and approach the workpiece without disengaging the wheel 6p from the wheel 6q.
The .µ tool holder. can move along part 1 as indicated above; it can also turn by describing an arc across this part 4.
To control the rotational movement of the tool holder 5, a toothed sector 5e has come onto the part 5b, or is integral with it, this sector is concentric with the shaft 4. and it meshes with a rack 2. of which one of the ends pass through a suitable guide 7a carried by the machine.
The other end of the ± rack is fixed to one end of a curved rod 7c (see figure 1), the other end of which is articulated in 7d on the large arm 7e of an angled lever which pivots at the 'place of his elbow on an axis fixed to an ear 8a of the sliding part 8 mounted on the frame so as to move along the latter by approaching or away from the support as will be explained.
The 7th lever is controlled by a suitable cam, so that when the sliding part 8 performs - * @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
its back and forth movement by pulling lever 7 towards the part ±, or by moving it away,
it also gives a back and forth movement to the rack 2.which rotates sector 5e and part 5, the cam giving a movement.
EMI6.1
/ previously determined / which can be variable or constant or can be the combination of a constant movement and a variable movement of the rack as will be explained *
In the device shown, an arm is integral with the arm 7e and carries a roller 7g which bears on a flat cam 10 carried by the support 10 p permanently fixed on the frame * The cam 10 is preferably constituted by a bar the lower part of which forms the cam on which the roller 7g bears.
The: strong face of the bar 10 has a lower * part * 10a and a higher part 10b connected by cam elements inclined in the opposite direction and connecting, 10c and 10d so that the rack 1 has n '' any desired movement determined beforehand (will prefer * a variable movement) when the sliding part makes its movement back and forth and while @ the cutter C cuts a groove in the control member as will be explained
The sliding piece µ,
can receive its back and forth movement by means of any suitable device, preferably by means of a screw 8s disposed along the frame 1 and engaged with an internally threaded portion of the sliding part 8; a suitable device is provided by which the screw 8a rotates first in one direction and then in the other suitable speeds and at the desired times so that the sliding part 8 moves the lever 2e and the rack 7 in one direction during the operation of cutting the groove in the blank of the member, 7-:

control, then returns the lever and rack when the groove is made to prepare the size of a groove in another blank.
The screw 8s can be actuated by the headstock shaft by means of any suitable device such as, for example, those which are commonly employed in milling machines, such as Pratt & Whitney screw milling machines, and which will be easily understood by those which are part o The advancing screw is made so as to advance the sliding part 8 of any desired length per revolution of the shaft in the fixed headstock.
To prevent vibration of the arm 7f, the roller 7g carried by the arm 7f of the lever 7e must constantly remain in close contact with the cam during the cutting operation of the master cam. A spring could be used but preferably a chain or cable 7m is attached to the upper part of the lever 7e and passes over a pulley 7n; a weight 70 is attached to the hanging end of the cable; the action exerted by this weight, which is multiplied by the ratio of the lever arms 1c and 7f, is sufficient to keep the roller 7g in close contact with the surface of the cam 10 at all times.
The amplitude of the back and forth movement of the sliding part 8 is sufficient for the rack 7 to turn the tool holder 5 by about 70 for each complete stroke in one direction or the other, of the sliding part 8 .; as a result, the tool Ç laterally describes an arc of 70 at each stroke of the rack 7.
Tool C is preferably a mill made of the best quality tool steel; it preferably has an external shape corresponding exactly to the cross section of the groove to be cut in the control member.

The blank B of the actuator is made of a suitable steel and has an exactly cylindrical part of the desired length and diameter. It is preferably provided with journals b and b 'at both ends, by means of which it can be mounted so as to be able to rotate in the machine or mechanism in which the finished control member is to be used.
The journal b 'is preferably longer than the journal b and has at its outer end a peripheral series of parallel longitudinal grooves b' intended to engage with a correspondingly internally grooved bush of a centering piece 2a doll replacing the usual centering point;
it follows that when a blank of this kind is placed in the machine, with its grooved journal b * then in the centering part 2a and its journal b taken in the off-centering part 3a, it is in position suitable on the machine and is centered exactly between the dolls 2 and 1 the part 2a pulling it and making it turn like itself
Referring to Figures 4 and 7 it can be seen that in cutting the blank, the tool Ç traverses an arc represented by the line aa in Figures 4 and 7, this arc extending longitudinally relative to the blank, in the mm plane, figure 8; the tool moves on this arc in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the shaft b designated by in Figures 4 and 7.
As stated above, the machine shown has been established for cutting spiral grooves with variable pitch in the steering control members of automobiles. In the drawing (Figure 7), [would be the axis of the rotating shaft * the radius R would be the arm of the rotating shaft and the circle 0¯ (Figure 7) would be the lug carried by
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
this arm; the direction itself is not represented in the drawing. Assuming that the lug of the rotating shaft arm does not have longitudinal movement as it describes the arc or groove of the actuator, it would not be necessary to have movement. longitudinal of the tool, during the operation.
At the ends of its lateral movements, because of the tool holder 5, the axis of the tool Ç will be below the plane of the axis of the blank B mounted between the centers 2a and 3a as indicated in ± and d in Figures 4 and 7. In the central part of its movement the axis of the cutter will be above the plane of the axis of the blank as indicated in ±, in Figures 4 and 7.
The diagrams of Figures 7 and 8 show various relative positions taken by tool Ç and the cam blank during the trimming operation. In figure 7 the line YS intersects the axis of the rotating shaft (this axis is represented in S) and the line YS indicates the average position of the arm mounted on the rotating shaft and which carries the lug which engages in the groove of the actuator. Figures 7 and 8 also show the variation in depth of the spiral groove cut in the control member. At the extreme positions designated by c, d and in the central position designated by the tool, it will not penetrate as deeply into the blank as in the positions indicated in k, i.
As shown in figure 7, as the tool Ç moves longitudinally on the blank it traverses a plane m, m (figure 8) which is at right angles

/ which of the central line of the swing arm - (indicated in S in plan is parallel to the plane in figure 7), / which plane is indicated by line h, A containing the axis, of the blank, (Figure 8) and is perpendicular to the plane of the axis of the cutter. At the ends of movement of the cutter along the blank (in the positions indicated by c and d.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
in fig. 7) the bottom of the groove is furthest from the center of the cylinder, as shown in 1. in fig. 8.
At points k and, figure 7, the end of the cutter Ç, moving in the plane m, m, meets the maximum diameter or axial line e, e of the blank and the bottom of the groove is closest to l 'axis of the cam as indicated in n in figure 8. At point f.figure 7 (central position) the bottom of the groove is slightly further from the axis of the cam than at points k, i, as shown in Fig. 8. In other words, the groove has a corresponding depth at the intermediate points k, a slightly lesser depth at the central point, and the shallower depth at the extreme points c d.
The cutter Ç corresponds to the lug which is carried by the oscillating shaft of the cam and this lug exactly follows the groove made by the cutter; the lug will go deeper into the groove at points k, i, where in fact the force will usually be greatest.
The machine works as follows t
When ready to start the cutter Ç must be removed from the path of the blank B, properly adjusting the shaft 4b before the blank B is placed between the centers 2a and 3a. The slide piece 1 is withdrawn first, for example on the right, as in the case of FIG. 1, so that the cutter Ç will be in alignment with the point ±, figures 4 and 7 and below the axis of the blank B, which is mounted between the centers 2a and 3a.
When the blank B has been properly mounted between the centers 2a and a, the cutter Ç is rotated and the blank B is held stationary between the centers while the operator approaches the cutter Ç to the blank by making
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
turn the shaft ± until the cutter has entered the required depth into the blank. In the machine shown, the cutter has entered the blank at the start at a point which is a little below the plane of the axis of the blank as indicated at ± in figures 4 and
7.
To facilitate the penetration of the milling cutter into the blank, it is possible to drill a suitable hole in it before placing it between the centers. During the initial operation of penetrating the cutter into the blank, the latter is kept stationary and the sliding part, 8 is also kept stationary.
When the cutter has properly entered the blank, this cutter continuously rotates at the desired speed and the operator activates the mechanism which turns the control via 8s and the mechanism which turns the center which drives the draft. Cutter C is driven continuously at the desired speed, screw 8s and the blank both turn very slowly at predetermined relative speeds and due to the combination of the two movements, cutter C cuts a helical groove in the cylindrical blank B moving from point C to point 1, (figures 4 and 7) and the pitch of this helical groove varies constantly from the middle f at the two ends ± and d, under the action of the cam 10 on the rack 7.
If the bar 7 moved absolutely in accordance with the sliding part 8, the cutter Ç would move in a substantially uniform fashion from point to point d (figures 4 and 7. However, as the sliding part ±, moves towards the inside, the roller 7g begins to traverse part 10 of the cam 10 and allows the arm 7f to rise slightly gradually; this causes a delay
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
variable of the movement of the rack bar 7 with respect to the sliding part 8, it follows that the rack bar 7. moves more and more slowly than the sliding part ± and this while the roller 7g par- short part 10 of the cam to the neutral point thereof.
The part 10c of the cam is traversed by the roller 7g while the cutter Ç moves from point .0. on point . 1 figure 76 The roller 7? then immediately begins to traverse the part 10d of the cam and there is a gradually accelerated movement of the rack 2 with respect to the movement of the sliding part, µ. during this time, the cutter 1 moves from point ±, to point d and the lower roller 7¯ * 7f moves from the center point passing over part 10d of the cam.
As indicated, there is a gradually delayed movement of the rack 7 with respect to the sliding part 8, as the cutter moves from point C to point f and there is a gradually accelerated movement of the rack. 2 with respect to the sliding part 8 as the cutter moves from f to d. During this time the blank] 3 has rotated by the desired amount while the cutter has moved from c to d The amount B has rotated during groove cutting depends on the gear ratio and is approximately the next t for the smallest report the rough turns 540, for the report above 630, for that above 720, for the next of 810 and for the following of 900.
In the example shown, it is assumed that the blank B is rotated at uniform speed during the cutting operation with the result that the helical groove cut in the blank (see figure 5) has a pitch of about 90 in relation to the axis of the blank at its center (where
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
the cutter is at point f $ figure 7) and the pitch of this groove gradually increases from the center f (see fig. 7) of the groove to each end of the latter, the highest pitch being at the ends in ± and d.
We could obtain the same result if we gave the blank a variable rotational movement giving the cutter a uniform speed on its arc, but the speed of advance on the headstock had to be increased to obtain this result; if the feed at the start was the maximum feed that the cutter can take, the feed in the middle position would be too great to have a soft cut and could damage the tool. On the other hand, if the lead at the start was low and increased to a maximum in the center, the pruning time would probably be too long.
It is obvious that various modifications can be made to the construction of the machine, while remaining within the scope of the invention; different mechanical devices can be employed to produce the desired and necessary arc-shaped relative movements of the cutter and the blank and the rotational movement of the blank relative to the cutter during the cutting operation. size to produce the variable spiral groove on the blank. Consequently, the invention is not strictly limited to the embodiment described above and shown in the drawing.
