<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Improvements to timing mechanisms for internal combustion engines
This invention relates to improvements in the timing mechanisms of valveless engines and it relates to a mechanism for controlling the timing valves in an engine of such radial cylinder type.
The radial cylinder internal combustion engine according to the present invention is characterized in that a distribution sleeve in each cylinder is combined with an angled drive shaft (or equivalent member) mounted in a manner.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
re to be able to turn near each cylinder with a view to actuating its sleeve, these shafts being parallel to the crankshaft and controlled by the latter by means of gears.
According to a preferred embodiment, according to the present invention, an epicyclic gear train mounted on the crankshaft actuates a toothed wheel which is in engagement with each of the shafts of the series of control shafts of the sleeves, this arrangement making it possible to obtain the desired speed ratio between the crank shaft and the control shafts of the: sleeves, in a crank housing having the minimum dimensions in all directions.
In order to better understand the invention, a particular embodiment will be described by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing which is a vertical section of the dispensing mechanism. The engine crankcase and radial cylinders are of any desired construction and each cylinder is provided with a sleeve 10 with a lug 11 projecting downwardly into the crankcase. A ball joint 12 is mounted in this lug to receive the crank knob 13 of a barrel control shaft 14 disposed parallel to the crank shaft 15 and near the cylinder. The direct connection of the crank knob 13 of the shaft 14 with the sleeve 10 by means of a ball bearing communicates to the sleeve the desired reciprocating and oscillating movement in the usual manner.
The control of the shafts 14 is carried out as follows. An eccentric part 16 of the crank shaft 15 carries a sleeve 17 provided with an external toothing 18 at one of its ends and an internal toothing at the other end; the external teeth mesh with a fixed crown

20 secured to the housing concentrically to the crankshaft. The internal toothing 19 is engaged with a toothed wheel 21 of smaller diameter which is free to rotate on the crankshaft concentrically thereto and this wheel carries a second toothed wheel 22 of much larger diameter s'. extending as far as the proximity of the control shafts 14 of the sleeves. Each of the shafts 14 is provided with a small pinion 23 meshing with the large toothed wheel 22 so as to be actuated by the latter.
The advantage of the epicyclic gear is that a considerable reduction in speed can be achieved by means of a mechanism having small dimensions in all directions, so that the large wheel 22 rotates at a relatively low speed and can therefore mesh with a small wheel wedged on the sleeve control shaft 14 to actuate it at the desired speed. Since all that is required is a small wheel on the sleeve control shaft, the sleeve can be placed near the inner end of the cylinder without requiring an enlargement of the crankcase to accommodate part of the cylinder. the transmission gear.
A suitable arrangement is that in which the fixed ring gear 20 is provided with sixty six teeth, the inner and outer wheels 19, 20 mounted on the eccentric 16 each having sixty three teeth and the smaller wheel 21 mounted on the shaft. with cranks 15 sixty teeth. This results in a reduction of 10. 1. The large wheel 22 may be provided, for example, with one hundred and eighty teeth and the pinion 23 with thirty six teeth, resulting in a multiplication of 5: 1.
The result is that the quill control shafts 14 are operated at half of the shaft speed.

cranks, as required for a four-stroke cycle.
This invention provides a simple construction and arrangement of gears for actuating the timing sleeves of a radial cylinder engine, the mechanism being particularly characterized by the fact that none of its parts need to rotate at a high speed, and in the particular arrangement described, no element rotates at a speed exceeding that of the motor shaft, the complete mechanism being at the same time compact and light.
