Fig. 6 is. a detail view of the. on the rear face of the rack actuated by the gear shift servomotor of this embodiment.
Fig. 7 is a section on 7-7 of FIG. 4.
Fig. 8 is a section on 8-8 of FIG. 4, and fig. 9 is a section on 9-9 of FIG. 7. The engine shown is a diesel engine comprising a housing 11 and several cylinders 12, only one of which is shown.
Each piston 13 is coupled by a connecting rod 14 to a corresponding crank 15 of the crankshaft 16. The camshaft 17 rotates at the same speed as the crankshaft, as will be described. below, and carries cams to. fuel 18, one for each cylinder. The forward adjustment position of the camshaft is shown in fig. 1 and the reverse gear position of the cam corresponding to the crank angle shown is shown in dotted lines.
Each cam 18 actuates, by the intermediary of a roller 19, the plunger 21 of the fuel pump at the corresponding variable flow rate. The plunger 21 moves back and forth in a cylinder 22 and can receive a rotational movement around its longitudinal axis by a sleeve 23 keyed to the plunger and which rotates by the movement of a rack 24. The end of the plunger has a fuel return groove 25, so that the angular rotational position of the plunger determines the amount of fuel delivered per stroke.
The variable fuel return takes place at the end of the delivery of the fuel, so that the beginning of the delivery is determined by the shape of the cam and its duration is regulated by the angular position of the plunger 21. - Bustible is delivered via a shut-off valve 26 and a pipe 27 into an injector 28. Each cylinder therefore corresponds to a fuel pump.
The crankshaft 16 carries a pinion 31 which meshes with a toothed ring 32, integral with a cage 33 which rotates freely on the end of the camshaft 17 and on a shaft 34 having the same axis as the shaft 17. The cage 33 carries a series of planet gears, bevel 35, which mesh with a bevel planetary wheel 36, wedged on the shaft 34, and with a conical control wheel 37, wedged on the camshaft 17.
The pitch diameter of the ring gear 32 is double that of the pinion 31 of the crankshaft and, consequently, the angular speed of the cage 33 is equal to half that of the crankshaft, but given that the planetary wheel 36 is stationary, except during the adjustment and shifting movements described below, the control wheel 37 and the camshaft 17 rotate at an angular speed twice that of the cage 33. Therefore, the camshaft rotates at the same speed as the crankshaft, but in reverse.
For any angular adjustment of the shaft 17, the shaft 34 must receive an angular adjustment movement of the same amplitude and in the opposite direction. The change of operation of the engine shown is brought about by admitting air either to one or the other of the opposite ends of a pneumatic piston servomotor, the supply of air being interrupted. And the air escaping from the engine as soon as the latter has completed its driving stroke. .
This pneumatic actuator is shown in detail in fig. 2. In this figure, 41 designates the air cylinder and 42 a movement braking cylinder, which is separated therefrom by an interposed cylinder cover 43. A piston 44, movable in the cylinder 41, is joined by a rod 45 with a braking piston 46, movable in the cylinder 42. The lower end of the rod 45 comes out of the cylinder 42 and is connected to a rack 47. The two chambers of the cylinder 42 communicate by a pipe 48 provided with ' an adjustable needle valve throttle 49.
The chambers of the cylinder 42 are always filled with pressurized oil by a pipe 51, which leaves from a point. Of the pressurized lubrication circuit of the engine, and in which is interposed a retaining valve 52. The piston 46 prevents therefore only that the movement of the change of rate is too rapid.
To cause the movement of the piston 44, and consequently that of the rack 47, towards the forward position which is that of FIG. 2, the air is made to flow through the pipe 53 until the reversal movement is complete, then the exhaust of the air from the cylinder 41 is controlled by letting the air escape. of this pipe 53; for reverse gear, air is made to flow through pipe 54, until reversal is complete, then air is controlled from cylinder 41, allowing air to escape per de, this pipe 54.
The admission and the exhaust through the pipes 53 and 54 are controlled by a valve device, not shown.
A device for locking the cage 47 in its two end-of-travel positions comprises a differential cylinder 55 to which the pipes 53 and 54 end and in which slides a differential locking piston 56 functioning at the same time as a valve.
A coil compression spring 57 pushes the piston to the right, so as to bring a locking pin 58 below a locking shoulder 59 formed in the rear surface of the rack 47 when the rack is in its position. upper or forward gear, this stud being brought above a corresponding shoulder 51 when the rack is in the lower or reverse position. Two pipes start from the casing 55 on the side opposite the pipes 53 and 54 and sonr, slightly offset along the axis with respect to them.
The first pipe 63 ends at the lower end of the cylinder 41 and the second, 64, at the upper end of the same cylinder. In the locking position of the piston 56, these pipes communicate with exhaust ports 65 and 66 drilled in the piston 56, so that the two operating spaces of the cylinder 41 communicate with the atmosphere through the orifice of exhaust 67.
When compressed air is admitted into the pipe 53, the piston 44 being. in the lower position, the piston 56 receives an outward movement and, consequently, the exhaust ports 65 and. 66 are no longer in front of the pipes. At this moment, the movement, apart from the piston 56 which removes the locking pin 58, makes the pipe 53 communicate with the pipe 63 and the pipe 54 with the pipe 64. The piston 44 then completes its entire upward stroke. , the space above it communicating with the atmosphere through pipe 54. When compressed air is. admitted into the pipe 54, the reverse or downward movement takes place.
To the. end of the movement and when the pipes 53 or 54 communicate with the atmosphere, depending on which one was previously under pressure, the lock engages again and the air escapes from the corresponding space. of the cylinder 41. FIG. 6 shows the rear surface of the rack, on which one can see the locking shoulder 59. The groove 68, which cooperates with a head 69 (fig. 3 and 4), is part of a device preventing the arrival air can be interrupted before the servomotor has completed its full stroke.
The rack 47 (FIG. 8) carries oblique teeth and meshes with a helical-toothed wheel 71 which can slide axially on the shaft 34 and made integral in rotation with the latter by means of straight keys 70. The outer end of the shaft 34, that is to say that which is on the left side in figs. 3, 4 and 8, is pierced with axial troll case in which slides a piston 72. A cylindrical block 73 of the same axis as .le piston 72 is.
housed in its bore of the latter, so <i can rotate relative to it. An axial pro lengthening 74 of the block 73 penetrates in friction. fat in an axial hole of piston 72 and carries a retaining nut 75. Cylindrical block 73 is connected to toothed wheel 71 by a transverse pin 76 held in place by screw caps 77 which are screwed into toothed wheel 71 (fig. 9). The cross pin 76 has a flattened shape in cross section (Figures 5, 8 and 9), and the threaded terminal holes of the plugs 77 are in portions of the wheel 71 which are not present. no teeth.
The maximum angle of movement of the wheel 71 is. . of the order of 108 ", which makes it possible to remove part of the teeth at diametrically opposed points.
The pin 76 passes through longitudinal slots 78 of the shaft 34; however, the strong twisting effect between the. toothed wheel and the shaft is absorbed by the keys 70 and not by this pin 76. The piston 72 has notches 79 (fig. 7) which allow the pin 76 to freely perform its angular movement with the shaft 34 The only function to be fulfilled by the pin therefore consists in moving the wheel 71 axially along the shaft 34.
The outer end of piston 72 is in the form of a yoke, comprising two parallel arms 81 which are articulated around pivots 82, located in the extension of one another, each at one end of a of two spaced apart parallel levers 83. The other ends of these levers are articulated on pivots 84, located in the extension of one another on a two-branched stirrup 85.
Each lever 83 has a longitudinal slide 86, in which a block 87 can slide. The two blocks 87 oscillate around coaxial pivots 88 carried by a cursor 89 guided in slides 91 and receiving a movement perpendicular to the axis of the shaft. 34. When the position of the cursor 89 is such that the axis of the pivots 88 and that of the pivots 82 are. taken together, the toothed wheel 71 remains stationary in its intermediate position (fig. 3), whatever the position of the pivots 84.
The slider 89 is coupled by a rod 92 with a regulator 93 responsive to the action of the speed of the engine. This governor is constructed in such a way that, when the engine speed is normal, the parts occupy the position of fig. 3 in which the axes 88 are on the same line as the axes 82. When the speed of the motor decreases from its normal speed, the cursor 89 gradually comes to the position of FIG. 4, which is that of low speed.
It occupies this position for a minimum engine speed chosen at will and for all speeds below this minimum. The rod 92 receives its movement by a servomotor following the movement of the device sensitive to the speed of the regulator.
The caliper 85 oscillates around a pivot 94 carried by a threaded part 95 with multiple threads on the right which receives movement in a direction parallel to that of the axis 34.
The part 95 is screwed into a threaded bore 98 of a pinion 97 rotating in bearings 99 and the teeth 101 of which mesh with the teeth of the wheel 71. It is easily understood that, while the wheel 97 rotates during rotation. 'a displacement of the rack 47, it does not undergo any displacement during the axial movement of the wheel 71 for the following reasons: The rack and pinion 97 are provided with teeth which correspond to the pitch helical teeth. of the wheel 71.
It is obvious, therefore, that when the wheel 71 is moved axially, while the 1st rack is stationary, this wheel 71 will rotate at the same time due to the inclination of its teeth. Thanks to this same inclination of its teeth and to the corresponding inclination of the teeth 101 of the pinion 97, the latter will remain stationary.
Operation. The operation of the device for reversing the running of the engine shown passing from the position shown, which is that of forward gear, into the reverse gear position, is as follows: For this purpose, air is admitted into the pipe 54 until the piston 44 has come down to the end of its stroke. The first effect produced consists in releasing the latch 58, and once the pipe 54 communicates with the atmosphere, the latch is relocked. If it is assumed that the engine is stopped, the regulator maintains the cursor 89 in the position of FIG. 4.
As the 1st rack 47 descends over the entire length of its stroke, it rotates the toothed wheel 71 as well as the pinion 97. The angle of rotation of pinion 97 is directly proportional to the stroke of the rack, but the The angle of rotation of the wheel 71 results from the combination of the rotational movement caused by the rack and the movement of the wheel 71 over the entire length of its stroke to the right, due to the movement of the threaded part 95 over the entire length of its stroke to the left. As a result, the inclination of the levers 83 changes direction and the piston 72 is pushed inward with respect to the shaft 34.
Therefore, the camshaft 17 and the cams 18 rotate by their maximum angle, which is assumed to be 108. When the engine is running and its speed exceeds 112 revolutions per minute, the governor advances cursor 89 progressively until the axes of pivots 88 and 82 merge when normal speed is reached. The wheel 71 is returned by this movement to its intermediate position (FIG. 3), thus establishing the normal advance conditions.
In a variant of the motor .described., The reversing and adjustment device could also be arranged so as to exert on the advance adjustment a subtraction action instead of an addition action. It would suffice for this purpose -to change the direction of the inclination of the teeth of the rack 47 and of the toothed wheel 71 and to modify in an appropriate manner the stroke of the rack 47 in relation to the diameter of the wheel 71 to modify the angle of the rotational movement that this wheel receives by the movement of the rack alone.
