METHODE ET APPAREIL DE REGLAGE DE.LA DISTRIBUTION POUR MOTEURS
ENDOTHERMIQUES A PISTON,

Fig. 7 représente le diagramme donnant la valeur des déplacements angulaires de la valve (ordonnées OR) en fonction des déplacements angulai- res des cames opératoires (abscisses AS).

Par exemple, il est possible; de faire la valve creuse pour qu'elle puisse être refroidie par l'huile de circulation; de remplacer le dispositif à cames actionnant la soupape par un dispositif d'un autre type donnant les mêmes résultats; d'interposer un absorbeur de chocs entre les cames et la valve de réglage; de faire varier le nombre des lumières et leurs dimensions et par conséquent le nombre de paires de lumières et leurs dimen- sions dans la tête du cylindre ainsi que le rapport de transmission entre l' arbre coudé et l'arbre à came;

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ADJUSTING THE DISTRIBUTION FOR ENGINES
ENDOTHERMAL PISTON,
The present invention relates to an apparatus for adjusting the distribution for endothermic piston engines in general, and to a mechanism for producing said apparatus.
According to a characteristic feature of said device, there is provided for the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust ports of the engine placed at the head of the cylinder, a valve having an intermittent rotary movement thanks to which at each working cycle of the engine said valve must stop after the admission race,
until the exhaust stroke is about to begin
The adjustment process is carried out by means of an adjustment mechanism consisting of a rotary conical valve having a number of ports which is equal to half the number of ports in the cylinder head and arranged to open. and closing said ports in the preestablished alternate order, said valve being mounted so as to be in perfect contact with its seat in the head of the cylinder, and being connected with an actuator capable of imparting a rotation to it. intermittent,
with stops during periods of compression phases? combustion and exhaust of the combustible mixture constituting the working fluid of the engine.
Said actuating device may be of any type suitable for the aim pursued. Preferably, it consists of a group of cams actuated by the bent shaft and arranged so as to act at the desired moment 1 moon after the other on rotating members arranged in a drum or in another similar support!) Capable of transmitting. to the valve the rotary movement imparted to it by said cams.
The object of the invention is illustrated according to two different embodiments in the accompanying drawings, in which @

Figo 1 is a longitudinal section of a first embodiment of the adjusting device provided on the cylinder of an engine, shown partially.
Figo 2 is a schematic plan view of the essential parts of the adjustment device of fig. 1 as located in relation to the motor head
Figo 3 is a longitudinal section of a second embodiment of said adjustment device as provided on the cylinder of an engine.
Figo 4 is a schematic plan view of the actuator according to Figo 3.
Figs. 5a to 5f show schematically the position taken during the working cycle of the engine by the ports of the rotary valve with respect to those of the cylinder head and the corresponding angular position of the crank.
Figo 6 shows the distribution diagram in relation to the angles of the crank
Fig. 7 represents the diagram giving the value of the angular displacements of the valve (ordinates OR) as a function of the angular displacements of the operating cams (abscissa AS).
As shown in Figso 1 and 3, in cylinder 1 of the four-stroke engine having a head 2 provided with two intake ports A and A '(Figso 5) and with two exhaust ports S and S', which can be placed in communication with their respective intake and exhaust ducts 3, or isolated from them, is mounted for rotation below the head 2, the regulating valve 4 having openings D and Identical in shape and dimensions to those of the cylinder head and placed 1800 apart.
In the example of Figs. 1 and 2, such a valve is keyed by its stem so as to be able to slide inside a hollow shaft 6 and is kept in contact with the head 2, in a perfectly sealed manner, by means of a spring 7 surrounding the rod 5 and housed in a larger interior space 6, resting against a ring and conical mid-washers 8 having their seat in a groove formed on 1-end of 5.
For actuating the valve 4 are mounted on a rotary shaft 9 parallel to the rod 5, three cams, each of which acts on one of the rings of rollers of a drum 11 mounted on a shaft 12 parallel to the shaft. tree 9 and stem 50
This shaft 12 actuates at a speed equal to its own speed, by means of toothed wheels 13 and 14, the hollow shaft 6 which consequently turns the valve 4.
The entire actuating mechanism of the valve 4 is enclosed in a housing 150
In the example illustrated by Figures 3 and 4, the valve 4 is keyed by its rod 5 to a rotor 16 and is kept in contact with the head 2 of the cylinder by means of a spring 7 surrounding a fixed nozzle 17. to the rotor.
Around the rotor 16 rotating on a ball bearing 18 is mounted a pin ring 19 against which can operate one or the other of the two cams 20 fixed on two shafts similar to the shaft 21. On the same 21 shafts are also found fixed two

In order to reduce the load acting on the adjustment valve pen =

During its rotation /) a pusher 24 screws inside a threaded nozzle 25 is actuated by 19interjAédiaîre of an oscillating lever 26 by means of a cam 27 fixed on the shaft 9.
The cam has a shape such as to determine during the rotation of the adjusting valve the lowering of the pusher.

The operation of the mechanism having the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is as follows:
Suppose the adjustment valve is in its initial position,
EMI3.4
which is that shown by Frigo 5lJ a, that is to say the fully closed position of all the lights of cylinder 1, and that the camshaft 9 is rotated with its cams 10 by any means known to a speed which for a four-stroke engine is half that of the crankshaft of the motor.
The first cam acting on its corresponding roller determines the rotation of the drum, of the roller and consequently of the valve 4, while the two adores cams remain at rest.
While the movement of the two cams, the drum and the valve

ve continues the two ports D and D9 of the valve begin at a certain moment to cover the ports 8 and S 'of the cylinder, and the exhaust phase begins (point I of the diagram of Figs. 7 and 5b). the lights of

7) g the entire escape phase then takes place and the first cam leaves its corresponding roller
The adjustment valve again begins to rotate forwards under Inaction of the second cam until it starts the intake phase (point III of the diagram of Figs 7 and 5d) until it has a complete superposition of the lights D and D 'of the valve on the ad-

mission A and A of the cylinder (point-V of the diagram in Fig. 7) c The second cam then gives way to the third cam and as the last 19ext-remitted movement of the intake phase is reached (point VI of the diagram of Figs .
7 and 5a) and stopping of the valve occurs in a position symmetrical to the starting position (point VII of the diagram in Figs. 7 and 5f).
From this moment, the valve remains at rest for a period of time corresponding to the compression phases! of explosion and relaxation, to resume its movement at the beginning of the next escaping phase with a new cycle and so on.
Thus the valve is in the same position every two revolutions of the cams and every four revolutions of the crankshaft having in the meantime carried out two full cycles.

Eues two short, almost instantaneous positions of the valve in correspondence with the intake and d9eoh ports, the purpose of which is to improve the scanning and filling of the cylinder with their obvious advantages, while on the contrary the relatively long stop between the end of the intake phase and the start of the exhaust phase is intended not to keep the various components under load while the phases

compression, explosion and expansion take place, during which the internal pressure would reach values such that it would create a strong friction between the valve and the cylinder head, because of which a great effort would be required to operate the cylinder. device.
However, in order to reduce said friction during the periods of rotation of the valve, it is possible to provide inside the shaft 6 an annular cam cooperating with the rod 5 to slightly lift the valve 4 from its seat formed in the shaft. cylinder head 2. The profile of the cams can be drawn analytically by points or, more quickly, graphically according to the law of motion to which the valve is subjected.
The work of the valve in the example illustrated in Figs.
3 and 4 is analogous to that explained above and yet the same results are obtained with two cams instead of three.
Obviously, the practical realization of the present invention is susceptible to modifications compared to what has been illustrated and described above, without the method and the mechanism for its realization going beyond the scope of the invention.
For example, it is possible; to make the valve hollow so that it can be cooled by the circulating oil; to replace the cam device actuating the valve with a device of another type giving the same results; to interpose a shock absorber between the cams and the adjustment valve; to vary the number of ports and their dimensions and therefore the number of pairs of ports and their dimensions in the cylinder head as well as the transmission ratio between the crankshaft and the camshaft;
change the shape of the regulating valve to other equivalent shapes, etc ...
