<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

from 50 periods to for example 16, 2/3 periods.
This is necessary because the rotational speed of the engine cylinders would otherwise be very high and make practical application of the system impossible.
When using three-phase motors - 8 poles for example, for a frequency of 50, the conveyor rollers would turn, in the case of direct drive, at a speed of about 750 revolutions, while the practically usable speed of rotation of should not exceed 250 turns.
The frequency transformation however requires the presence of a - station -: the special transformation, very expensive and bulky.
In addition, the known construction methods have the drawback of offering only little space for the arrangement of the individual motor, since the transport rollers are covered by plates and the different motors must be placed below. of this decking.
The present invention enables the conveyor rollers to be driven by means of individual motors, employing ordinary three-phase current at 50 periods.
This is achieved by connecting the individual motor neither directly nor indirectly to the axis of the conveyor roller and by transmitting the movement through a special drive cylinder, which is connected to the individual control motor.
For a determined diameter of the transport rollers it is possible, by suitably choosing the diameter of the driving roll, to obtain any desired transmission ratio.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the appended drawing represent by way of example one embodiment of the invention.

The conveyor roller a is mounted so as to be able to rotate on its fixed axis b., So that this axis does not participate in the rotation. Of course, the conveyor roller a could also be fixed to the axis b and the latter could be mounted in the frame e so as to be able to rotate there. The conveyor roller a rests on the driving cylinder c, and its axis b can move vertically in its bearings.
The driving cylinder c can rotate in its support frame e. At one end of this drive cylinder is the rotor of the drive motor d. The casing of this motor itself can be connected to the support ± of the driving cylinder. For a roll diameter of 400 mm. for example and a driving cylinder diameter of 80 mm. a transmission ratio of 1: 5 will be obtained, so that for a normal three-phase octopolar motor the speed of rotation of the drive cylinder c will be 750 revolutions and that of the conveyor roller only 150 revolutions per minute.
If it is desired to increase the speed of the conveyor roller a, it suffices to increase the diameter of the driving roller c in a suitable manner.
Another advantage of this device is that the drive motor is located at a relatively large depth below the plates, which prevents it from being brought to too high a temperature and makes access easier. .
As the conveyor roller a rests over its entire length on the driving roller, the shaft b is only used very little in the rolling; moreover the rollers can be replaced easily without worrying about
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
electric control, which is not the case for the individually electrically controlled rollers known until now.
Of course, the electric motor can also be connected to the driving cylinder by one. coupling; furthermore, the drive cylinder can be lathe machined so as to have a concave surface, so that the outer edges alone of these cylinders ensure the transmission of movement to the conveyor rollers.
Fig. 3 shows another embodiment of the roller conveyor with individual control of the conveyor rollers.
This arrangement is applicable when it is desired to adopt small spacings between the rollers and the force to be transmitted is not considerable.
It is then sufficient to have a drive cylinder between two successive transport rollers, to which it will transmit the movement simultaneously.
Since the drive rolls obviously operate in the same way as intermediate wheels, the direction of movement imparted to the conveyor rollers is uniform.
