<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"VALVE IMPROVEMENTS"
The present invention relates to valves and more particularly to hydraulic and other valves, actuated by a piston or equivalent member and comprising a pilot valve to facilitate the opening of the main valve.
The main object of the invention is to obtain an improved construction of a simple shut-off valve of the type described above, which can be actuated by water or other fluid at a pressure equal to that of the controlled fluid. this way. valve, without the difficulties resulting from the arrangement of a control piston of considerably larger section than the main valve.
The valve construction according to the invention is particularly intended for use in the supply and discharge soda of washing machines and the like, the control piston being subjected alternately to pressure and pressure.

exhaust by means of a three-way valve or valve, according to the desired opening times and duration.
According to the invention, the valve device comprises a valve boot or cap provided with intake and exhaust manifolds and an interior partition which forms a seat for the main valve, the valve cap being topped with 'a vertical cylinder containing a piston or its equivalent, and comprising at its lower end a cover plate amo-
Screw constituting a guide for the lower end of the valve stem.
The valve stem, which carries the pilot valve, passes freely through. through the central part of the. main valve, the latter being guided independently and kept concentric with respect to its seat in the partition by fins of the usual type.
The main valve comprises an annular disc, arranged to rest on the valve seat and mounted in a bonnet comprising a peripheral rim, with a hollow hub protruding from the bonnet, the hub being threaded externally to allow fixed a washer which holds the annular valve disc in place, and the free end of the hub being notched to allow the passage of fluid through these notches when a collar on the valve stem comes into engagement with this hub.
The invention is hereinafter described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of the valve device according to the invention.
Fig.2 is a view in axial vertical section.
Fig.3 is a plan view.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the main valve. Fig.5 is a plan view.
Fig.6 is a partial vertical axial sectional view, corresponding to Fig.2, and showing a variant.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The valve chapel a, provided with intake and exhaust manifolds b, c on its opposite sides and an internal partition wall d, which forms a seat for the main valve e, is surmounted by a vertical cylinder f enclosing a stamped gasket piston g, this cylinder being fixed for example by a boss or hub a1 projecting from the lower part of the valve stem. Water or another pressurized fluid can be admitted to the upper part of the cylinder through a three-way valve h (fig. 2), which in its closed position makes the end of the cylinder communicate with the exhaust. pement.
Piston g is attached to the upper end of a valve stem i, extending downward through boss al and passing freely through the main valve, and is normally lifted by a spring. spiral coil j surrounding the valve stem, the lower end of the spring resting against the bottom of the cylinder f.
The main valve comprises an annular disc e, made of rubber or other suitable material, and a cap el, comprising a peripheral rim e2 concentric with the disc; the two parts of the valve are assembled together by a hollow hub 'e3, protruding from the cap and passing through the disc e, which is held on the cap by a washer screwing onto the threaded hub. This hub e3 surrounds the. valve stem; 1. with sufficient play, and its free end is notched at e4 for a purpose which will be explained below.
The valve is held concentrically with respect to its seat by fins kl formed on the washer ,, the edge of the latter, which penetrates inside the valve seat, is preferably serrated or radially grooved by narrow triangular notches at small distance from each other around its circumference, to prevent hammering when the valve closes.
On the opposite face of the cap e1 is provided a there-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
projecting vre e5. which constitutes a seat for the pilot valve 1.; this valve 1 is fixed on the valve stem i, the end of which is guided by a cylindrical recess m, housed in the inner face of a cover plate m1, screwed or bolted to the lower end of the chapel of valve, in axial alignment with main valve 9. and cylinder f.
Preferably, the pilot valve consists of a disc 11, with a peripheral rim, supporting a ring of rubber or other suitable material, intended to be applied on or around the lip e5 on the underside of the main valve; this disc 11 is fixed to the end, of reduced diameter, of the valve stem, for example by being formed integrally with the spindle 12, screwed onto the valve stem i and being able to slide in the guide recess m.
Below the main valve, the valve stem 1 is provided with a collar i1, constituting a stopper, arranged so as to be able to come into engagement with the notched end of the hub e3 of the main valve in order to remove the latter from its seat; the stop i1 comes into engagement with the hub e3 only after the pilot valve 1. has first been moved away from its seat, the notches e4 of the hub e 3 then allowing water or other pressurized fluid from the inlet to pass through the valve to the outlet side of the valve in order to equalize the pressure.
The pressure maintaining the main valve in the closed position then being reduced, the piston g, continuing its movement, can move the main valve e from its seat by the contact of its collar i1 with the hub e3 of the valve.
The valve then remains open as long as pressure continues to be exerted on the piston. When the three-way valve h is turned, the pressure on the piston g ceases and the cylinder f is brought into communication with the exhaust; the spring .. \ 1. then acts to lift the piston together with the valve stem and both valves, hammering the valve
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
prinoipale being prevented by the indentations eaten around the edge of the washer k.
When the piston reaches the end of its upstroke, the pilot valve is held by the spring pressure against the underside of the main valve, and the latter in turn is held against its own seat, the pressure of the fluid. exerting from below the valves helping to keep them in the closed position.
It should be noted that the only force required to open the valve is that necessary to overcome the spring j and the low pressure exerted on the pilot valve 1.
The troia faucet. ± channels can be placed directly on the valve chapel or in any other suitable position, only one pipe connected to cylinder f being necessary in the latter case.
Likewise, when the valve device is remotely controlled by means of relay valves, only one pipe connected to the cylinder f will be required, the exhaust taking place through the relay valve.
In the case of remote control by relay valves, there may be circumstances where it is necessary to actuate the valve device directly at the dwarf, independently of its operation by the pressurized fluid, for example in the case where the lines are separated from the cylinder.
To allow this operation, it can be provided, as shown in FIG. 6, a pushbutton n, mounted so as to be able to slide in the cylinder cover f1 and by means of which the valve stem i can be lowered so as to open the auxiliary valve or pilot valve 1. A flexible diaphragm n1 is preferably placed to prevent leakage of pressurized liquid through the opening in the cover.
If desired, the push-button or the like can be arranged to open not only the pilot valve, but also the main valve, by manual control from outside the valve valve.
