<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

PERFECTIONING PATENT Charcoal wash.
The present invention relates to modifications made to the construction of the apparatus that is the subject of the main patent of October 22, 1923, N 313,197, with a view to allowing the application to feldspar tanks of the devices described in patent.
Indeed, the provisions which are the subject of the aforementioned patent, and which give excellent results in their. application to grain tanks, do not give, in practice, satisfactory results in their application to feldspar tanks, the weight of the feldspar bed, very important compared to that of the shale and coal bed, masking the variations. dēweight, of the shale bed on which the variation of the stroke of the float controlling the device is based.
The modifications in question are shown, by way of example, in the appended drawings, in which:

The raw products are brought into the washing tank by the

EMI2.6
qlwlg.part of the shale drains into the shale evacuation chamber 8, Only a part of these shales drains into this chamber, because, as long as the shales move above the washing table 9 supporting the feldspar bed,
a certain quantity of these shales passes through the feldspar 3 and the metal mesh of the washing table 9 and is discharged through the opening 10 made in the lower part of the tank. The shales evacuated in 8 and 10 are collected, by means of suitable pipes, at the bottom of a noria

drip. The quantity of shale evacuated to. across the feldspar bed is constant and accounts for about half
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
maximum flow of shales; the other half of this maximum flow is evacuated by the evacuation chamber 8.
We can thus see that by ¯ adjusting, ¯ from a maximum flow to zero flow, the evacuation of the shales passing through chamberē8, we¯¯ can vary the total quantity of the shales evacuated from
EMI3.1
the maximum rate up to a; rate, equal to, half ,, µ, the latter.
To reach the chamber 8, the shales are forced to pass below the visor 11 and between the visors 12 and 13, the height is adjustable. As indicated in fig. 1,

the visors 11 and 1 semeninatallated so that the shales form a slope between them which cannot flow statically. Above the discharge chamber 8, there is provided a compression compartment 14 bolted to the seuri 7 and arranged so that the washed coals 5, entrained by the stream of water, pass above the threshold 7 and on either side of this compartment
EMI3.3
ment of, compression.
On the latter is mounted, through a valve 15, a valve 16 in which moves a slide 17, which opens or closes the communication between the compression chamber 14 and the atmosphere. If the 1µ tap is open when the washing tub is running, air can enter and exit by following arrows 18 and 19 (fig. 6) and water can rise and fall in the compression compartment 14 below the 'influence of piston movement. This water passes between the visors 11 and 13¯ and produces a current which drives towards the chamber 8 the schist slope located between
EMI3.4
oes .two visors, which produces the evacuation, of the schists in this chamber.
On the other hand, when the drawer 17 closes the tap, 16, ¯ 1, 'air located above the water in the compartment. compression. 14 opposes any displacement of this water under the effect of the p3stortg, which suppresses the current between the visors 11 and 13 and thus prevents the evacuation of the shales from occurring. It is therefore sufficient to automatically adjust the position of the .drawer 17 according to. the quantity of shale to be evacuated in order to automatically regulate the operation of the washing tank. ,
The adjustment of the position of the drawer 17 is based on the following principle:
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1
The fine products (0¯ to 10 /, sahistes'4, and coals 5, which have graded above feldspar. 3 and are subjected to agitation caused by the high frequency and low amplitude pistoning caused part .piston 1 , remain ¯, so to speak, in suspension in water and behave, up to a certain point, as fluids with a density ¯ greater than that of water, the density of shale layer 4 being higher than that of the coal bed 5.
If, in these superimposed layers of the two fluids 4 and 5, a float 20 of suitable shape is introduced, the latter. takes an equilibrium position which is ¯ a function of the relative thicknesses ¯ of layers 4 and 5 whose total thickness is constant.
When the thickness of the layer 4 increases, the float 20 is. raised; when, on the contrary, it decreases, the float * sinks.
This float must have a cylindrical shape. We could give it a tapered shape, the large base. located 6, .the lower part, on condition that the inclination of the walls is sufficiently low. ¯¯¯ z¯ ¯
A lenticular or cylindrical shaped float, fully immersed in the product and held at the end of a rod, * would not be suitable, µ less than the external generatrices of the cone, connecting with the rod the largest horizontal section of the floats: =, have an extremely low inclination, less than 30 on the vertical.
The float 20 is attached to the end of a rod. square 21. It is guided by a series of fixed rollers 22 and 23 allowing it only to move along its axis .. A chain
24 is fixed, on the one hand, to the end of the rod 21 and .; on the other hand, by means of a suitable yoke 25, on the circumference of a toothed wheel 26 meshing with the chain.
This toothed wheel is wedged 6, the end of an axle 27 carrying, at its other end, the slide 17. This rod 27 is mounted on ball bearings 28 and 29. It carries, on the other hand, a cam 30, the position of which relative to the rod 27 can be changed .for adjustment at the time of starting the device, and this by means of a bolt passing through a series of holes made, on the one hand, in the cam 30 and, on the other hand,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>

in the hub 1 keyed on the rod 27. ¯ On this cam 30, acts 'a counterweight 32 by means of a wire 33: fixed, by une.vis.34-', on. the part of the oame formed by an aro of a circle concentric with the axis 20. ¯The counterweight 32 tends to drag the latter in the direction of the arrow F (fig. 2, 7. and 8);
it therefore tends to push the float 20 through the pinion 26 and the chain 24.
On the other hand, the position of the cam 30, shown on
EMI5.2
¯; "'Fig. 2, .corresponds. to the positions of the spool 17 and the wheel
EMI5.3
26 shown in figs. 7, and 8. The position of these different members assumes that the layer of shale 4 is very weak. And that the float 20 is at the bottom end of its travel.
In this
EMI5.4
4as, ¯, ¯. drawer 17., by closing the communication between the compression chamber 14. and the atmosphere, interrupts the evacuation of the shale in the evacuation compartment 8 (fig. 7). At this time, the schists only evacuate through the feldspar
EMI5.5
and, ¯. as this flow is about half of the maximum flow, whereas the flow of the shales arriving in the wash house almost never reaches such a low value, the thickness of the shale bed 4¯. increases, which tends to raise the float 20
EMI5.6
and to drive, via the chain 24 and the pinion 26,
the drawer 17 and the blade 30 in the direction of the arrow in this movement in the direction of the arrow 0, the
EMI5.7
xayon de.lāoame 30., through which the counterweight acts 32., .. decreased, which has the effect of reducing the force which
EMI5.8
opposes the rise of the float 20 and corresponds, finally, to a reduction 4 <¯a, ¯¯grpier.
This 'arrangement increases the stroke' that the float 20 would have performed if it had been subjected to a constant force tending to push it into the washing bed. All . so happens as if. the float ¯20 decreased in weight when it rises and, on the contrary, increased in weight,
EMI5.9
when it s / s.
This provision has. the advantage of increasing the displacements of the float 20 which, otherwise .. would be quite small, of the order of only a few centimeters, between the moment when the thickness of the shale bed is maximum and that
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
where -it is minimum. The assembly of the cam 30, the counterweight 32 and the wire 33 can be replaced by a counterweight placed on a lever such that the lever arm, according to which the latter acts on the float by the intermediary of the axis 27. and of the chain 24, increases when the float sinks and decreases when it is raised.
The fact that the whole washing bed is subjected to a continuous pulsation causes a parallel pulsation of the float ¯ 20, which avoids any danger of jamming despite the low forces involved. The continuous pulsation of the float 20 is of sufficient amplitude weak so that it cannot cause the opening of the. tap 16, when the latter is closed, nor when it is closed, when it is open,
On the axis 27, .est, mounted an index 35 moving in front. a graduated sector 36 and indicating at any time to the washer the state of its washing bed.
The drawer 17 is mounted, with gentle friction, on a captive key housed at the end of the shaft 27. It is held in place by the screw 37 which carries a pin engaging in a corresponding groove of the drawer 17 It is sufficient to slightly unscrew screw 37 in order to be able to take out the drawer 17, in order to wipe and lubricate it. ¯ ... ¯
The aforementioned provisions apply in the case .des feldspar tanks in which part of the shale is discharged through the feldspar and the other part through the rear threshold.
In the case of feldspar tanks in which all the shales are discharged through the feldspar bed, the. evacuation chamber 8 does not exist. The regulation is then done as follows:
Under piston 1, or above it, is an adjustable-water inlet-38, ¯ Experience has shown that when the flow of water supplied by this pipe 38 increases, the discharge to through the feldspar bed also increases.
On the contrary, when we. decreases the flow of water brought by the pipe 38, the quantity of schists which are evacuated also decreases and becomes almost zero when the water supply by the pipe 38 is interrupted. To determine the automatic adjustment of the operation from the washbasin, it is done by means of a tap

In this oasr ,. the device etan '-. similar. to that described above, when the thickness of the feldspar bed increases, the float rises, opens the tap similar to tap 16, thus increasing the flow rate of the water inlet 38 .and, ¯ consequently., the quantity of shales evacuated. the thickness of the shale bed decreases. the tap similar to tap 16 closes, which reduces or completely interrupts the flow of water into the
