Improvements to transmission mechanisms for automobiles and similar machines,
The present invention relates to transmission mechanisms for automobiles and the like and especially to the category of mechanisms of this type which make it possible to obtain several forward speeds and a low reverse speed.
The main object of the invention is to provide a transmission using a driving toothed wheel, a toothed wheel serving as a pivot and a pinion carrier rotating with the propulsion shaft, all arranged in a manner. improved, the rotation of the wheel-. Pivot can be adjusted at will in forward motion by means of a brake to give a low positive speed, and by means of a resistor.

variable tance to give increased speeds to full speed, while power is transmitted to a driven shaft, directly from the lever action exerted on the pinion carrier by its pinions which are in taken with both wheels.
Another object is to provide a transmission in which no additional toothed wheel is required for the reverse gear.
Yet another object is to provide a transmission enabling the transmission of the full multiplied engine torque, for low speed and "reverse."
Another object is to construct a transmission which produces a variable speed without appreciable loss of power by friction and runaway.
Another object is the construction of a transmission which can be adapted for use as an improved two-speed, reverse power transmission device.
Another object is to provide a variable resistor which, employed in these types of transmission, produces an impeded pumping or pumping action, rather than frictional resistance.
Another object is to provide such a variable resistor having the advantage of being able to be made inactive or to be able to be disconnected at will.
This invention is especially intended for use with internal combustion engines because it is not necessary to disengage the driving power from the mechanism before gear changes can be effected. It has flexibility, convenience, safety, compact nature and high torque transmission capability, as will be explained.
In the drawings which form part of this specification, fig, 1 is a longitudinal section through the axis of a

gear change mechanism incorporating the invention. FIG. 2 is a detail view of the band clamping means.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the liquid resistance device.
Fig 4 is a section showing a means of supplying liquid to this device.
The shaft 1 of the engine is established to be connected to the internal combustion engine in a well known manner and the shaft 2 is intended to be connected to the driving wheels. A sleeve 3 engaged with the shaft 1 is supported by the casing 4 and carries a bevel gear 5 wedged on the sleeve. Pans sleeve 3 rotates a shaft 6 which extends substantially as far as the shaft 2 and on which is fixed a pinion support 7, carrying one or more shafts or pivots 9 arranged radially. The latter each carry two toothed pinions 10 and 11 joined rigidly; the pinion 11 is in engagement with the wheel 5 and the other with the large toothed wheel 12 held by a sleeve-shaped hub 14 rotating on the shaft 6.
This hub is supported in bearings 13 and is provided with a disc 15 which is located at its end, outside the casing 4, and which closes a cylinder 16 in which the liquid resistance element is located. . The hub 14 may be keyed or otherwise attached to the wheel 12 so as to allow the bearing 13 to be removed when necessary. This hub can be permanently attached to toothed wheel 12 and be detachable from disc 15.
Inside the cylinder 16 is a disc or an eccentric piston 17 intended to operate with a partition 18 pressed by a spring, to discharge the liquid so as to expel it through a port 19 and to suck it through the another light 19. A plunger 20 actuated by means of a sleeve 21, a lever 22 and a rod 23 serves to open and close the communication between the slots 19. This sleeve rotates on the hub elongated 24 of the disc 17, Cedernier has at its end one or more notches 25 intended for

engage with the clutch member 26 which can slide and rotate on the shaft 6.
At the end of the shaft 6 are heels 27 intended to engage with the clutch element 28; the clutch is controlled by a lever 30 and a rod 31. This hub 29 can slide in the member 32 but rotates with this member 32 which is suitably connected to the driven shaft 2.
The liquid resistance element may be kept supplied with a suitable liquid such as oil from a reservoir from which a pipe 34 terminates. a collar 35, shown in FIG. 4, where the oil passes through the tubular part of the shaft 6 into the cylinder 16.
Around an annular part of the wheel 7 is placed a friction band 36 stretched by suitable means, for example by the screw 37, with threads on the right and on the left, which is shown in Fig. 2 and whose arm 39 is moved by a control device such as rod 31.
Around the large toothed wheel 12 there is a friction band 40 clamped in a similar fashion by an arm 41 controlled by the rod 23 which is the forward control.
The invention is not limited to the variable resistor shown as any other suitable resistor element may be substituted for it so as to have the liquid contained in a flexible chamber around the tube. cam-shaped piston 17. An intermediate member may be interposed between the cam and the flexible chamber which produces an anti-friction stroke for the cam in its pumping action. Several such chambers can be used instead of one.
Air can be used for the resistance element instead of liquid.
The operation of the gear change is as follows: When the forward gear control rod 23 is moved to the left in fig. 1, the plunger 20 is first obli-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
g to open the lights 19, to the desired extent until full opening. In the case of complete closing, the piston 17 is forced to rotate with the cylinder 16 and the wheel 12.
If, on the contrary, the ports 19 are only partially closed, the piston rotates more or less, depending on the degree of closure, inside the cylinder 16 and this results in a reduced speed in forward gear because the low speed wheels then act. to the extent determined by the resistance. If the rod 23 is moved to allow the free passage of the oil, no power is imparted to the propulsion shaft 2, but by appropriately varying the pitch. oil wise, you get any desired speed

from zero ijiis Only at full speed.
To obtain the low speed in the positive direction, the commando lever is moved to the right until its limit, which engages the propulsion shaft to the intermediate shaft 6 and loosens the band. 36. When adjusting the rods and levers, sufficient clearance is given so that a neutral position can be obtained between the positive low speed position and the point where the variable resistance is applied.
To reverse gear, the car is first stopped, then by moving the reverse gear control rod 31 to the left, the clutch 26 is disengaged from the heel 27 and engaged with the sleeve hub. 24. By continuing the movement of the rod to the left, the band 36 clamps onto the wheel 7 by means of the arm 39 and the screw 37, and the wheel is thus made stationary. This wheel 7 being thus held, the bevel wheel 5 and the pinions 10 and it rotates the large wheel 12 in the opposite direction at a low speed with the full multiplication of the engine torque.
It can be seen that the bands are attached as clutches, which determines the flexibility of the transmission.

<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Age of the oil by the lights 19 also intervenes to tighten the band 40 after the ports are fully open and the rod has reached its limit, in order to maintain the large wheel 12 and thus give a low speed posi - tive forward.
Although not shown in the drawings, it goes without saying that the bearings referred to above must be made adjustable for axial thrust and be held in place in a suitable manner by removable members. .
It should also be understood that any suitable type of casing can be employed, for example a casing bolted vertically to the motor and having a cover attached horizontally.
Instead of having the rods and arms to operate the controls as shown in fig. 1, one could connect pedals to bands 36,40.
If desired, a single lever may be employed to operate the forward and reverse controls, in a manner analogous to the system employed to operate the parallel rods in wandering wheel transmissions; and since the bands act clutch, such a single control can advantageously be used in the form of a pedal.
