<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

. Improvements made to vertical chamber coke oven batteries, The Company known as: THE KOPPERS COMPANY.
The present invention relates to coking retort furnaces, of the vertical chamber type, and it relates particularly to devices for supporting the structure of the battery and for controlling the temperatures of the support devices and of the structure. from the neighboring battery part.
In the construction and operation of furnaces
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
vertical coke, as practiced today, the furnace structures were supported by metal beams attached to the concrete foundation. The foundation was subjected to strong stresses, given the relatively large expansion of the beams, when these latter were strongly heated, In addition, gas escaping through the joints at the base of the furnace structure and burning in the - below the coil, produces warping of the beams, as a result of uneven heating. Also, in order to support the coke extractor mechanism, by means of these beams, it has been necessary to employ an intermediate structure to connect the extractors to the beams.
The main object of the invention is to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks and to reduce the temperature and therefore the expansion of the lower part of the battery.
In general, the invention consists in replacing the previous beams mentioned above by frames or anal devices, placed in the vicinity of the ash discharge openings, and provided with hollow portions in the vicinity of the heating walls. chambers, in order to produce the circulation of the cooling air.
The invention also consists in the provision of beam battis, extending side by side below the heating chambers and walls, with gas-tight joints between the adjoining sides of these frames, hence it follows that there is no brick work exposed below the battery, these frames having
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
openings aligned with those of the bedrooms?
The present invention thus relates to devices thanks to which very low temperatures are maintained in the base position and in the support structure and furthermore, a heat-insulating lining is preferably provided,
for the portion of the frame in contact with the hot coke,
The battis and the coke extractors can be directly connected, the intermediate structures being omitted and the height of the battery is said to * cloud of this quantity,
The invention will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings showing, by way of example, the preferred construction according to the present invention.
On these drawings:
Figure 1 is a partially end and partially sectional view of the complete vertical coke oven battery.
Figure 2 is, on a larger scale, a view, partially end and partially in section, along line II-II of Figure 3, ± * a portion of the vertical coke oven battery of Figure 1, certain - parts being torn off,
Figure 3 is a partly side elevational and partly sectional view taken along line III-III of Figure 2 of a portion of the cola oven battery.
The vertical coke oven coil, shown at Ij, has a foundation 2, which may be concrete, or
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
other suitable material, which is supported on columns 3. The structure 4 of the furnace, which rests on the foundation 2, comprises a superstructure 5. A loading wagon supplies the tanks 7 placed at the tops of the tanks with coal. various battery retort furnaces.
A primary gas outlet is located at the top of each retort furnace and is connected to a main manifold 9. A secondary gas outlet 10 for each furnace is connected to a secondary manifold 11.
As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3, the battery 1 comprises several vertical retort furnaces 12, alternating with heating walls 13. The battery can comprise any suitable number of furnaces, for example five, but we only have shown here two of these ovens, the others being identical with those shown and described. The battery comprises the usual side walls 14 and 15 as well as the regenerators 16, a portion, only, of one of these appearing in figure 2. The furnace structure 4 is supported on the foundation 2 which comprises horizontal concrete beams 17 and 18, only portions of which appear in Figures 2 and 3, the remainder being torn off to preserve the clarity of the drawing.
Beams 17 and 18 extend under the outer walls of the battery and are: supported on columns 3.
The portions of the furnace structure between the beams 17 and 18 are supported by parts or frames
19, each of which has a central opening conforming to the opening in the bottom of the corresponding oven. As best seen in Figure 3, each of the frames 19
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of adjacent furnaces practically supports the: - half of the intermediate heating wall. As can be seen in FIG. 2, the end portions of the frames 19 are projected into the beams 17 and 18 and are supported by these beams. Each frame 19 has tie rods 20 placed on its sides and extending between the beams 17 and 18.
An expansion joint 22, consisting of pitch placed between the end of each frame 19 and the beam 18 allows the expansion of the frame 19 under ordinary operating conditions, without subjecting the foundations to harmful forces. The expansion joint 23 is also provided between the adjacent side edges of the frames 19 to maintain a gas-tight connection between them. The expansion joint 23 comprises an internal body of poise which is held by braided asbestos indicated in 24, which occupies a groove formed by recessed rim portions adjacent to the frames 19.
Each of the frames 19 is provided, at its upper end, with a hollow rim 27, rectangular in transverse section and which extends around the periphery of the frame. The ledge 27 has suitably spaced vertical reinforcing fins or walls 28 dividing the ledge into compartments, the dividing walls 28 being provided with circular openings 29, in order to establish communication between the various compartments. The bottom walls of the side compartments are provided with relatively large openings 30, which communicate with the atmosphere.
Some of the compartments at the end of the frame 19 are open to the atmosphere by vertical passages 32. The end portions of the room are each.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
alder provided with horizontal flanges 33 and 34 which are in the projection of the upper and lower sides of the flange 27 and also @ a flange 35, the various end flanges extending into the beams 17 and 18.
The spaces between the rim portions 33 and 34 communicate with the hollow rim 27.
Immediately below the regenerators
16 are two air ducts 36, which are connected by their outer ends in the atmosphere and which, by their inner ends, communicate with the space between the flanges 33 and 34, at the right end of the frame 19, as seen in Fig. 2. The left end of frame 19 is also connected to two air ducts 37 communicating with the atmosphere.
Accordingly, the apertures 50, the passages 52, the hollow rim 27, with the apertures 29 and the spaces between the rims 33 and 34 with the connected air vents 36 and 37, constitute a device for circulating the air. air through and around the frame 19, in order to cool it. It should be understood that chaeug. frames 19 is connected to similar flues 36 and 37
Frame 19 is further provided with an inwardly extending top rim 39 and a similar lower rim 40 which conforms to the opening of oven 12 '. - edges 39 and 40, is filled with refractory material 41 such as for example refractory brick,
to constitute in fact an extension of the opening in the bottom of the oven 12. The. Ma-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The refractory 41 also constitutes a heat-insulating envelope surrounding the coke column, over a distance of more than one meter, around the bottom of the furnace.
Below the frame 19 and fixed to this frame to be supported therein, there is a casing or casing 42 having a somewhat irregular outline and this casing is inclined to the right, as seen in FIG. 3, its left side constituting a partial support for the coke column, A coke extractor comprises a shaft 43 passing through the housing 42, and on which is mounted a series of toothed wheels 44, in order to withdraw the coke from the base of the column, A series of pivotally mounted counterweights 45 have their movable ends adjacent to the corresponding gear wheels 44 and function to cediently prevent coke from falling from the column unless removed by the column. wheels 44.
Below the mechanism which has just been described, and supported by the casing 42, there is a hopper or storage chamber 46 in which the coke falls, when it leaves the casing 42. Hopper 46 is provided at its lower portion with a hydraulically sealed door 47 which is mounted to rotate 48 Each side of the door 47 is normally submerged in a hydraulic seal 49. - green, it allows the coke to flow through a discharge opening 50.
The casing 42 for the coke extractor comprises a suitable device for smothering or cooling.

after it emerges from the frame 19 and this device
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
comprises a series of water pipes 52, by means of which jets of water are sent over the coke, exactly before its removal from the base of the column, by the coke extractor It is very desirable that the cooled coke be as dry as possible, and for this purpose, devices are provided to prevent any excess of cooling water from coming into contact with the coke in hopper 46. The housing 42, comprises a curved portion 53, having a projecting portion 54, below which is placed a horizontal trough 55,
intended to collect all the water which may flow down the side of the housing or which may fall from the coke, before the latter enters the hopper 46. The trough 55, which extends practically over the entire length of the coke extractor directs the water to the inclined end walls of the hopper 46, by means of which it is directed into the hydraulic seal 49, The latter may be fitted with any suitable device, to avoid any overflow
Trough 55 is mounted to receive a rocking movement by means of ears 56 and short shafts 57 and 58, rotatably supported at their respective inner ends,
by ears 59 and at their outer ends. by the housing of the extractor 42. The shaft 58 which rotates with the trough 55 extends through the housing 42, the outer end being provided with a handle 60, freely mounted, thanks to
EMI8.1
"\ to which the trough can be tilted at desired times,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
to remove any coke ash, which may have collected there The trough is locked in position, by sliding the handle on the shaft 48 so as to come into contact with a stop 61.
A water pipe 62 constitutes a device making it possible to water the trough 55 at the desired times to facilitate the flow of water in this trough.
In battery operation, the furnaces 12 are heated by the heating walls 13, the latter having horizontal ducts 64, 65, to convey the products of combustion, and the heating duct 66, of which only a portion is shown in Figure 3 A pipe 67régnant all around is shown on the wall 14 (Figure 2). The base of each heating wall is provided with an inspection opening 68. A pipe 69, having a movable outer cap 70, extends through the flange 27, of the corresponding frame 19, in correspondence with each opening 68, to give access to it.
The finished product, in the form of a more or less compact column of highly heated coke, gradually emerges from each furnace 12, and descends downwards through the frame 19, so as to enter the casing 42. . The coke column is broken because it is deflected in its downward passage towards the coke extractor. The counterweights 45, mounted on a pivot, prevent free portions of coke from falling until
EMI9.1
until they have been activated by the extractor of the front of, e, The coke is smothered exa.c-V having reached the '' ''
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
coke extractor,
and its temperature is reduced so that no subsequent combustion occurs. The coke accumulated in hopper 46 is discharged into suitable lagoons or conveyors, at desired intervals, for storage or shipment.
During the operation of the battery, the heating walls 13 and the side walls 14 and 15 reach quite high temperatures and the heat is conducted to the frames 19, including their hollow edges 27. Since the air flues 36 and 37 are connected to the atmosphere, a draft occurs through the hollow flanges 27 and their connected parts and heated air is consequently conducted into the atmosphere on the sides of the pipe. Battery. The operation of the air cooling system thus organized functions to dissipate heat from the frames 19 and the lower portion of the battery and thus maintains these parts at a relatively low temperature.
Further, the refractory linings 41 for the frames prevent any considerable portion of the heat from the coke columns from being transmitted through the support frames and the coke is smothered almost immediately after leaving the frames by the water. and the water vapor that is generated by the latter,
The result of the use of support devices with air cooling elements and of heat insulating devices incorporated therein is to reduce materially the temperature obtained in the support structure and in the base of the battery and to reduce as a result the expansion of the support weld
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
which has so far occurred during the operation of coke oven batteries, In addition,
the provision of expansion joints in addition to the low temperatures of the frames protects the foundation from forces which would tend to dislocate it and which could cause its failure.
Support frames with their adjacent edges sealed provide a gas-tight cover for the entire base of the brick masonry, and there may be no gas leakage, through the brick joints. The direct connection of the supporting frames and the coke extractor results in a shorter structure below the coil and achieves a reduction in the overall height.
