<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Method of support and constitution of the blade holder in the machines to sharpen the blade blades.
The present invention relates to the method of support and the particular constitution of the blade holder of machines sharpening the blades of knives in which the sharpening of the edge of the workpiece. is done simultaneously on both sides of the cutting edge between two rotating grinding wheels.
Although such machines are particularly suitable in principle for obtaining very fine cutting edges, they have so far not given good results in the u.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
wise because their flawless operation requires extreme precision, practically hardly achievable. This is particularly the case with sharpening machines with grooved cylinders engaging one another so that the sharpening edge faces are constantly engaged at other points. An irreproachable fine cutting edge can then only be obtained when each individual point is brought into contact in the same way and during the same time with the sharpening surfaces.
However, for this it would be necessary for the cylinders to have exactly cylindrical transverse sections, for their shafts to coincide with their geometric axes and to be exactly parallel to each other, for the bisector plane passing through the cutting edge of part 13. process coincided with the bisecting plane of the sharpening angle, that the cutting edge is pressed over its entire length, without vibration or oscillation, in the groove of the sharpening angle, etc. Apart from the difficulties of exe - cution, such machines would quickly lose their precision as a result of inevitable wear.
It has already been proposed, in sharpening machines with cylinders penetrating one into the other, the grooves of which are circular, to move the workpiece back and forth by a positive control in the direction of the length of the cylinder. the sharpening groove, and to have for this purpose the porteJLame on a guide axis, without however giving the part other possibilities of movement or any adaptation.
The present invention relates to a method of supporting and constituting the blade holder which allows the production of the finest and most perfect edges with such sharpening machines, even in the case where these machines do not partially or fully respond. totally that. in a defective manner under the conditions indicated above. It follows that these machines are essentially suitable for the production of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The finest cutting edges can be manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the practical use and at the same time as mass production articles.
According to the present invention, the workpiece to be treated is clamped in such a way in the blade holder that its cutting edge located between the two cylinders can, even in the case of a sharpening machine of imprecise manufacture or become imprecise by the use, constantly follow the line of contact or variable penetration of the rolls, that is to say automatically perform all the movements compensating for the faults of the machine. such that the cutting edge of the workpiece is formed as perfectly as if the machine had been manufactured with the greatest precision.
The possibility of automatic positioning of the part to be treated is obtained by the fact that the blade holder has received the capacity to move freely in several directions.
The workpiece can for example tilt around a longitudinal axis disposed parallel to its cutting edge, above or below it; it can also move freely upwards and downwards in a plane passing through this longitudinal axis and through the cutting edge of the workpiece and driven perpendicular to the common plane of the axes of the cylinders, and it can also pivot around a point on this plane. The center of gravity of the blade holder is transferred to this longitudinal axis so that the entire blade holder with the part clamped to it can come to rest in a state of equilibrium in any position. The required application pressure for sharpening is provided by the own weight of the blade holder.
In this way, the application pressure is distributed more or less evenly over the entire length, regardless of the position of the cutting edge of the workpiece in the sharpening groove formed by the pair of knives.

cylinders - and variable as a result of any inequalities in position -.
The drawing shows schematically in different positions two embodiments of the invention given by way of example.
Figs. 1 and 2 show exemplary embodiments of the blade holder in which the workpiece, for example the double-edged razor blade 2, executes its compensating movements in common with the blade holder 1. The blade 2 is held by the blade holder 1, by means of the pins passing through the two holes 5 and 3 '. The upper part of the blade holder is placed in the same plane as the cutting edge of the blade 2, the shaft 4 around which the blade 2 and all the blade holder 1 can swing * The necessary pressure for sharpening is provided by the weight 5 which is arranged so that the center of gravity of the entire blade holder is in the axis of the shaft 4.
The shaft 4 is, as can be seen in FIG. 8, capable of moving freely in a vertical plane in the guide slots 9 of the frame 8 of the machine. The blade holder 1 is rounded on both sides at the lower end at 6 and 6 'following a suitable curve so that (see fig. 8) the blade holder and its shaft 4 can be placed obliquely. between the walls of the frame and in the guide slots 9.
In the blade holder shown in front view in Fig. 3, the blade is retained only by the pin engaged in its middle hole 3 'so that the blade 2 can pivot freely around this pin in the median plane of the blade holder 1.
Figs. 4-8 show the different positions of the blade in relation to the machine used.
The sharpening machines of fig. 4 and 5 have smooth surface cylinders which can be rotated in the direction of the arrows around the shafts 10 supported parallel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
ment in the walls 8 of the frame, the control being effected by any suitable device not shown in the drawing.
The two sides of the sharpening angle touch each other here following the line of contact of the two cylindrical surfaces.
In fig. 6, there is shown cylinders with a grooved surface, the grooves and ridges of which engage one in the other. The left cylinder is shown with a purposely exaggerated eccentricity and as a result of this eccentricity the line of engagement of the cylinders whose surfaces penetrate each other continuously changes position as the cylinders rotate.
By the fact that the cutting edge of the blade 2 can swing first to the right and to the left around the shaft 4 and, on the other hand, the shaft 4 with the blade 2 can move up and down in the guide slots 9 of the walls 8 of the frame, the cutting edge of the blade has the possibility of following without vibration, in 11 varying angle of the sharpening groove, the line of engagement which continuously changes position as a result of the eccentricity of one of the cylinders, while owing to the fact that the center of gravity of the blade holder, producing by its own weight the pressure of application of the blade against the cylinders for sharpening , is in the axis of the shaft 4, the blade is pressed in all its positions, over its entire length,
with equal pressure against the surfaces of the cylinders and therefore the cutting edge is protected from harmful poor sharpening even in a case of so exaggerated eccentricity. We also prevent the different parts of the cutting edge and the blade from being unevenly sharpened *
Figs. 7 and 8 show the positioning of the blade or of the blade holder in the case of the exaggerated conicity of the cylinders.
In fig. 7, with the blade holder of fig '3, the blade 2 rotating around the pivot 3' alone follows the inclined position of the sharpening groove while in fig. 8, with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
blade holder of fig. 1, the guide shaft 4 moves into position at the desired angle of inclination in the guide slots 9 of the frame 8.
This positioning of the edge of the blade, adapted to the circumstances, also occurs in cases where the irregularities indicated in fig. 6,7,8 occur simultaneously for the cylinders.
Irregularities in the cylinders, exaggeratedly shown for the purpose of explanation, may well be avoided to a certain extent in the case of mass production of cylinders, but the smallest flaws in precision inevitably occur during production. This manufacture is already sufficient to prevent extremely fine and uniform cutting edges from being produced with such sharpening machines without the use of a blade holder according to the present invention.
The pressure of applying the cutting edge of the blade in the sharpening groove of the pair of cylinders can be produced by a spring instead of the weight 5.
In the case of the embodiment according to fig. 3, the sharpening of the second edge of the known two-edged blades can be done, without removing the blade from the blade holder, in a known manner. , by simply rotating the blade 1802 around the pivot 3 '.
Instead of the shaft 4, it is naturally possible to place at the upper end of the blade holder, on each side, journals sliding in the guide slots 9. The arrangement can also be reversed and it is possible to use instead of the pins and guide slots, other equivalent members.
