<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Improvements in and relating to internal combustion engines.

The present invention relates to engines. internal combustion of the Diesel type.
We have. found that internal combustion engines of the Diesel type with an output below a thousand horsepower, for example, are proportionately long, taking into account the space generally available when applied to merchant ships and in comparison with the steam engine with boiler which they are intended to replace.
In this application the width available is generally more than sufficient for the needs, the main aim of this invention being to create a diesel-type propulsion engine which can be accommodated in a machine room of much smaller dimensions than those required. usually, although the motor itself will be wider.

Although this is anyway satisfactory from a mechanical point of view, the length of the motor is increased, and for this

In the construction shown we use. two inverted two-stroke cylinders a and b, preferably cast in one piece, the cylinders containing identical pistons c. and.! respectively, provided with short articulated rods e. The cylinders a and b are mounted in the usual manner on a large and sturdy housing or frame g which in turn is mounted on a hollow base h all in accordance with well known practice.
A robust lever or balance i is used which pivots at the joint iL halfway between the two cylinders, this balance i being duplicated for construction reasons.
The lower end of each articulated piston rod is fixed to one end of the balance i, while one end of said balance. Is connected, by means of a conventional connecting rod k, to a crank k 'of suitable stroke and placed roughly just below cylinder a.
The balance ia preferably a length such that at no time during the stroke of the piston the center of the point of attachment of one or the other pisont rod e or f to the balance i does not exceed the axis of the corresponding cylinder. a or b.
The object of this arrangement is to obtain that the resulting lateral thrust of the connecting rod on the pisoton is always directed in one direction, and that in addition this lateral thrust can always press the piston on the intake port. scavenging air 1 and overloading the air lumen m in the cylinder, as there is a great advantage in keeping these ports always hermetically sealed to prevent the escape of scavenging air.
Another advantage of using this side of the cylinder as a guide surface is that the inlet side of two-stroke engine cylinders of this cylinder is always the coldest and the best lubricated .., although below this. It will be noted that the construction of this engine, thanks to the low angularity of the connecting rods e and f, reduces the lateral thrust of the pistons to a considerable degree, in comparison with the usual hollow piston. In this way, the attachment of niston rods e and f to the ends of a balance wheel such as
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
@ i constitutes a principle which possesses, to a considerable extent, the advantages of the conventional lacrosse system.
This construction produces the effect of an inverted two cylinder rocker motor of the known type.
It is understood that the number of units employed is zero !: slow limited, each unit consisting of a pair of cylinders e and b, a balance i and a crank k '.
The invention is also not limited to the use of a single-acting motor or even a motor. hollow piston.
In the application of the invention to the well-known and proven mechanism, use is made of a piston b yes is remote from the crank, to control a purging air pump n directly, by placing the cylinder of this pump on the hollow base h and directly below the piston d, the said driving piston d being connected to the piston n of the air pump by means of a rigid rod o of desired section and able to move back and forth with the piston d.
The piston of the scavenging air pump n may be single-acting, which simplifies the mechanism, but it will be more convenient to do it double-acting and have the rods o broken by stuffing-boxes in the same way usual, as indicated in o in fig.l.
The construction permits the use of a large capacity, double acting air pump, as there will not be large pressure fluctuations in the air chamber.
The arrangement of the cylinder of the purging air pump n in this position and its direct control offers this further advantage than the inertia of the piston n of the purging air pump 31 / and of the rods o and the inertia of the connecting rod f will be neutralized in a torque around the pivot of the balance i.
In addition, in order to ensure a satisfactory and suitable purging air chamber, the two cylinders a and b are preferably arranged so that the air intake ports 1,1, m, m, are arranged. are on the side closest to the engine spindle, while the exhaust lights p, p are on the inside of the engine, and since there is some space ± ¯ between the liner d 'water and the pa-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
tangential kings of the cylinder structure, this space ± ¯ is used as an air chamber, into which the air from the scavenging pump n will be brought to pass from this chamber through scavenging ports 1 and m in the cylinders motors a and b
As this construction offers many facilities in this respect,
Also preferably employed is the well known auxiliary sweep or overload valve which controls an air overload lumen above the usual sweep lumen.
The scavenging light is emptied by the piston in its downstroke, after the exhaust light is opened, and closed by the piston in its upstroke, the overload air light being, on the other hand, open under the control of the valve. after the piston has closed the ordinary scanning light, the effect of this being that the engine cylinder is overloaded with air coming from the. Air overload light in an amount corresponding to the back pressure produced in the sweeping system or under a higher pressure of a separate receiver, if such a receiver is provided.
The convenience afforded by this arrangement is that this rotary type valve, as shown, or any other suitable type, may be disposed in the walls of the current purge chamber q adjacent to and between the lumens. at overload m, m of the two cylinders; the valve thus opens directly into the purge air chamber qq which is a great convenience, since in this way the need for the use of hoses is eliminated, as well as air leaks or oil and the resulting trouble.
The shaft t of said overload valve s, as well as the fuel pumps, starter air valves etc., are controlled by a layer shaft (not shown) which in turn is checked for adjustment. in the usual way.
Consequently, it will be noted that each engine unit can be formed of two cylinders a and b with their pistons c and d and their piston rods ē and f the balance i, the main connecting rod

the, the single elbow bent shaft k 'and a .entably suitable with base plate h, completed by a purge air pumped n a rigid rod and all the necessary valves, in other words a complete engine.
The cylinders a and b are preferably formed with a large rectangular flange u at the top and bottom, and two bolts are provided which are arranged vertically on each side and at the top and bottom, so that any number of pairs of cylinders can be bolted together and mounted on sections. of housing, also bolted together, so as to form one, two, three or four crank motors, or alternatively according to the needs of the improved construction, which allows this very easily; one can for example fix in a motor with multi-pies elbows, a cover plate such as y, on the outside of the pairs of end cylinders.
The spaces between the cylinders will then form part of a common scavenging air chamber q, while a single shaft t passes through the valve box and controls all the rotary overload valves d. Accordingly, the construction provides for the very great ease of allowing the motors to be given any number of elbows or assembled units, with the exception of base plates and elbow shafts.
