 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

    @ SHOCK ABSORBER FOR AUTOMOBILES AND SIMILAR VEHICLES.

   The object of the present invention is a shock absorber of the so-called friction type, but which differs from known devices in that a lever connected to the axle of the vehicle is subjected to the action of two opposing springs, while being pressed. in an adjustable manner in two determined places against a part fixed to the frame.

   Thanks to this arrangement, it is possible to brake the springs in both directions, both in flexion and in relaxation.

   The drawing appended to this specification shows, by way of example, one embodiment of this damper.

   Fig.I is a front view of the shock absorber, from which the front clamps have been removed.

   Fig. 3 is a side view partially sectioned on a double scale, and Fig. 3 is a corresponding plan view.

   This shock absorber consists essentially of an elbow lever I, in one piece, connected at 2, by means suitable for the axle of the vehicle, and which can pivot around a bronze nozzle 3 mounted on an axle. or bolt 4 screwed into a pressed sheet metal plate 5, embracing a metal plate bolted at 7 and 8 to the side member 9 of the chassis.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   On either side of the lever I, are mounted on the bolt 4, stamped cups 10 in which are housed oiled felt discs II, which are pressed against the lever I, thanks to the action of a spring washer. 12 subjected to the pressure of an adjusting nut 13. On the other side of the plate 5, the head of the bolt 4 acts on a cap 14 resting on the plate 6. At their lower part, the cups 10 are extend by tabs 15 through them as well as an intermediate sleeve 17 by a bolt 16 passing through the base of the plate 5.

   At its upper part, the vertical arm of the angled lever I forms a fork 18 through which a pivot 19 embraces by one end of appropriate shape of two springs 20 and 21 arranged on either side of the lever 1, parallel to the spar 8. The other end of these springs embraces a pivot 22, 23, each of which is movable in a groove 24 drilled in the plate 5, as well as in a groove 25 provided in a clamp 26 joined to the plate 5 by spacer bolts 27 This chain is stamped to allow the housing of the nuts of the bolts 27 without forming a protrusion, while facilitating the placement of a casing enveloping the entire mechanism.

   Finally, between its center of pivoting around the bolt 4 and its articulation 19 to the springs 20,21, the elbow lever 1 is subjected to the action of two strips of fiber 28 which can be clamped against the lever I by means of a leaf spring 29 provided with grooves traversed by pivots 30 screwed into the plate 5 and carrying at the same time as the lamellae 28 a clam 31 also stamped, on which the spring 29 acts directly.

   Let us suppose that the wheels of the vehicle plunge into a pothole or a similar difference in level of the ground, the axle while stabilizing will make pivot the lever I in the direction of the arrow X but this pivoting will be counterbalanced on the one hand by the action of the spring 21 and on the other hand by the friction of the leaves 27, consequently the accelerations of the springs will be reduced and their amplitude reduced. On the contrary, the relaxation of the vehicle springs will be braked by the antagonistic action of the spring 20 The same favorable result will be obtained if the axle is

 lifted oscillates lever 1 in the direction of arrow Y.

    @
The construction described above could obviously be modified, without departing from the scope of the invention, depending on whether the shock absorber is to be applied to one or the other make of motor vehicle.
